I’ve had a 110 for 3 and a half years now, used everyday as a workhorse Van basically. All tools and materials can be stacked in back (bit tight) but often have 500kg in the back. Long levels/straight edges on roof rack as well. Then at wi ends it’s a super comfortable refined car. Been all over Europe in it, loaded to the roof with gear (and a dog) in total quiet comfort. On a building site one week, and south of France the next, and looks at home at both places. Nothing out there quite like it. Apart from a daytime led that was replaced quickly under warranty, not had an issue with it. Easily best vehicle I’ve owned, like having 3 cars in one

Thx for that testimony. I'm looking at the GX, but have always liked the 110. But as a buy-and-hold guy (my current daily driver is a 2001 Yukon with 362K miles that I had built), I've been reluctant to invest in a JLR rig.

@@ktpinnacle just go for it, nothing drives like a landrover. Depending on where you are located I think you can get a 5 year warranty, after that the extended warranty isn’t that expensive. Service it every year (not the recommended 2years) and I don’t think JLR are any worse than any other higher end brand. I’ve had more issues with Mercedes, Audi’s and even Ford than I have with two land rovers.

Like they say in Australia - if you want to go off-road, take a Land Rover. If you want to come back, take a Toyota. I have a JLR product, it got a new engine after 65k miles due two failed turbos, only cost $50k (it was warrantied)...... That kind of failure could easily be fatal when you are way, way off-road, which I do a couple of times a year.

Ryan, why not go into "Gravel" mode on a couple of those hills? I come to find out, more than 90% of modern Defender owners don't take their vehicle off-roading. I'm one of the few that does. I have a 2023, and it puts a smile on my face whenever I get behind the steering wheel. On the highway, it's as comfortable as anything I've ever driven. Off-road, it's extremely capable. For the mix of driving that I do, it does it all for me, with plenty of comfort and confidence.

I have a Discovery 5 and it is almost as capable as the new Defender but more luxurious. I love the capability, and feel it is what the Lexus has finally caught up to. With that said, I feel that the Defender and Discovery are definitely a niche market, but one that is along the lines of having a velvet pneumatic air hammer. Whereas the Lexus, Toyota LC, and Grenadier are just hammers with a bit of soft touch rubber or grips. All are capable, but the Land Rover to me is the essence of get it done with style.

What you’ve got to bear in mind……. is that this vehicle was prepared entirely as it is delivered X factory to the showroom. That is it hasn’t been prepared for the off-road demonstration in anyway Which means it is even more impressive when it’s just in its standard form yet absolutely walks any of these off-road challenges . For the off-road professional , once they have changed the specification to suit their requirements…….. this is literally unstoppable ! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Great review. I use my Defender for overlanding and think it’s one of the best platforms. One thing to note, you mentioned you can’t control the diff locks manually. You can actually if you have configurable terrain response. It gives you the ability to chose to lock the center or center and rear at the push of a button on screen. Also, you were in comfort mode for some of the off roading. You get better air suspension articulation in mud and ruts and also rock crawl.

Awesome! I was waiting for this video for so long! Those 20 inch wheels are a crime on this vehicle. Apparently it’s because of the weight and the need to use bigger brake discs… But to be honest I’d rather have undersized brake discs in this vehicle and a bit bigger breaking distance than 20 inch wheels in an off-roader.

LR built LR3s with 17"s and that thing weighed more than this. Max GVW on the LR3 is higher too. I'd assume the Land Rover found most of their buyers want the look and big wheels and brakes. The big brakes are probably great for towing in the mountains though.

Defender all the way. The other competitors you mentioned are all ladder frame chassis which may not translate to the best on-road feel. Especially the Grenadier that has a recirculating ball steering wheel and is atrocious on the road. It's a pure off road focused vehicle. The Defender can accomplish all of what you've shown being a monocoque/unibody chassis. And has great on road manners too.

With 18” Tuff Ant rims and bigger tires to air down - it is ultra capable. And a good looking vehicle you take to the Opera on the way home. All the modes make a difference. You do not like the white - so what?!?!? Ours is Pangea Green and receives constant positive comments regarding this color. Wheels are not steel. We have done extensive overlanding any minor off-roading. We would not want any of the other cars that you mentioned. NOPE!!! THIS ONE is the best - it also handled snow and ice without the cables. PS. Off-road light bar, 270 batwing awning, rock bars on sides installed air pump from JLR, fridge in center console, side box and ladder and Thule rack on roof(offered by Defender).

To answer your question as to why the Defender grounded out compared to the Ineos, Ineos has solid body on frame, compared to the Land Rovers independant suspension. Body on frame will always lift the vehicle when in holes. Im in no way saying one vehicle is superior over the other, I myself have a Discovery 3 (LR3), just the downside of these modern vehicles that are not body on frame is their lack of traditional articulation providing less clearance.
@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 5 ай бұрын
It's the fully independent suspension, not body on frame that makes the difference. A Jeep Cherokee XJ is unibody and will articulate way better than this due to the solid axles.
@newdefendermods

How does body on frame "lift the vehicle better in holes?"
@mattmers
@mattmers 5 ай бұрын
I think you are mixing up frame/body design and axle design. I assume you are referring to solid axles and independent suspension. I am also confused by you saying the 'solid axles' will always lift you when in holes. The wheel outside of the hole is generally in the similar position but the axle pivots along the center drive shaft and allows the other wheel to articulate into the hole maintaining wheel contact. Ground clearance does not have that much to do with it.

The Ineos is light years ahead of the Defender off road with solid axles, lockers, over built for long term abuse as well as the ability to easily modify and add large tires. There is simply no comparison in the near and long term. The Defender needs to be compared to street based AWD vehicles more then real off roaders like Ineos, or even Four Runner, Landcruiser, Bronco, ect. In that comparison it will destroy Subarus, Fake Broncos, Rav 4s and the like for sure.

As somebody that owns multiple Land Rover products, the biggest issues with the Defender and all the high end Range Rover products are: -The 20" tires not only hamper the off road ability but also allow the sidewall to be pinched and cut....super stupid for a vehicle that is designed to go off road. -Rumor has it that the rear locker does not work in reverse......again, super stupid -The traction control is probably the best in the world, right up there with the Toyota offering, but...... -The stability control has a major flaw as it will completely cut power to the wheels even though you have your foot pedal to the medal....even with the stability control turned "off".
@deanfisher1753
@deanfisher1753 5 ай бұрын
^This. I really wanted to consider this vehicle, but there are just one too many compromises. You can swap out the brakes to fit 18's to help with poor sidewall issues, but that shouldn't be needed for an "off-road" vehicle. Also to add to this list, while it has a rather high tow capacity, LR states to not use a load equalizing hitch so that will compromise towing quite a bit.

Nailed it with "just to froofy" lol. I've had nothing but Land Rovers for 30 years, and I just can't make myself fall in love with this thing. I’m buying a defender tomorrow and currently own a glc 43. The merc is Pathetic in snow and I’ve never taken it into mud or actual off-roaring. Its computer renders it timid and sad when wheels begin to slip. My allroad is a snowmobile in comparison. In fact, the 80’s accord I drove in high school was infinitely better in snow than the glc. The merc is FUN though, it’s just not a winter car. Plus, I’m not sure but I think the windscreen on the merc is many thousands so winter grit is right out.

excellent reviews! Owning a Jeep Jk 2 door with front lockers and a Land Rover LR4 V8 I think I will go with the Defender 110S P400 for 70K. I looked into the new Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 but the price at 59K is really not justifiable with that interior I think...... The new Defender will deliver a comfortable and nice feeling time on the road and still get me through the back country trail in Death Valley safely with the standard 19" wheels and all terrain tires. That is a compromise but not a bad one for the amount of off roading I do. The Rubicon trail I will attack with my beloved Jeep Wrangler any day! But to replace my LR4 the Defender is the perfect vehicle and 70k vs 59k for the Toyota is the winner after all I guess. Please make a review driving the Land Cruiser with off road tires through the same trails that you drove the new Defender, That would be telling for sure! Love your work, keep it up!

The problem for a serious 4×4 is that to make it more foolproof this One Ten has no real 100% CDL which can be dangerous and annoying when it gets really serious especially going uphill and most brake bias is going to the front. There are some movies of that. It should have a manual and a swaybar connect system. Replacing the rubber air springs or dampers on this new one is extremely expensive as opposed to their first air suspension systems.
@dennis3779
@dennis3779 5 ай бұрын
At 18.48 and on a big screen everyone can also see on this movie that even in the strongest crawl setting the brake bias is mostly to front because of the not 100% connection front to rear because it stays just a viscous connection and it is not even wet or winter. In professional terms that is a big fault. And no professional should use braking on steep hills but use low gear and engine braking but also then the bias would be to the front when going rearwards uphill but to the rear when going forwards downhill. A tip is lowering the suspension to normal height for more smooth articulation and less height of gravity.

Personally, This Defender does not compare to the Classic Defender. Land Rover seems to have decided to pursue the luxury off-road market instead of the basic bare-bones Land Rover Classic that was derived from the old WW2 Willys Jeep. This Defender would be out of place in any Military use, IMHO. And, it shows. Capable, yes, rugged... that would be pushing it. The reason why this drags and Grenadier didn't is unibody vs BOF design. Just like how Subarus have "huge" ground clearance, beacause of how it's measured and what the vehicle looks like underneath, it isn't the same like for like comparision as a Body on Frame design. I have a Defender. It’s great except …. In the old days you got in your car and what ever was playing just came on. Now it gets all muddled up with CarPlay Spotify and Amazon music and Siri and Alexa fighting - and if you want to relax in your full Leather cabin with mood lighting and the 14 speaker stereo. You can only do it for 5 minutes before the computer shuts down and you have to play the music from your phone speaker!!!! Or turn on an old transistor radio.

I think this $80,000 vehicle is a good choice for a soccer mom. Although highly capable, no typical owner would want to scratch or dent this vehicle, its just too expensive. Its also comical to scroll through unlimited settings to find the correct mode to make it through a tricky situation.

@@newdefendermods yeah, different vehicle. better comfort and aerodynamics in the Disco; MPG is *much* better. love the drop-down platform in the back, mimicking the RR split tailgate. I think more Defender drivers who don't actually go offroad would actually be happier in one frankly (except for app/dep angles). that said the D5 is in a limbo state and hasn't changed at all for a few years. maybe they are waiting for the EV change, who knows.

Everyone commenting on the reliability or lack there of and the expense these cause in the long run is a bit funny to me. If you can afford to drop 80+ large on one of these, but you can’t afford the ongoing cost of upkeep, repairs, etc., you probably shouldn’t have made the purchase in the first place. Also, great video as always. Can I also mention how jealous I am that you are in a location where you can wear long sleeves in June.

As a mechanic for Land Rover it is a bit ingenuous that you don't comment on the reliability of these vehicles. You buy new, keep it while it has a warranty and then sell it immediately or prolong the warranty. These vehicles have a proven track record of expensive problems and will cost someone greatly unless under warranty.
