Why not put a claiming pen around her so the other ewes dont knock over or take her food and water? I always admire your spirit and the way you take it all one day at a time. I know its not always easy but we are all cheering you on and sending all the positivity we can.
@wendyrowland77874 жыл бұрын
Sandi you need to move her from one side to the other to give the leg underneath a rest from pressure. I always drew up the subcutaneous injection outside the pen in a clean area with a sterile needle into as many syringes as required. Not putting the needle used on the ewe back in the solution thus contaminating it. I also warmed the solution for better dispersal and less discomfort for the patient. A sheep only has 4 days magnesium reserves so a mag solution will help, she needs the mag for muscular contractions. She may get enthusiastic if you offer some fresh leaves such as brassicas and ivy. You could pen her so that she can be left with water, try making a hole in the bedding for the bucket. so that she can reach it easily.

For Americans wondering why Sandi says hydro when the electric goes out. I found the answer on Quora: “Hydro” is a Canadian cultural term for electricity and gas. So they are referring to the cost of their electric and gas bill as part of monthly expenses. Since electrical utility was provided by the province-run Ontario Hydro, it has become something of a shorthand term for all utilities even though Ontario Hydro has since been privatized and no longer exists as a publicly owned utility.
@rmack484 жыл бұрын
I have been away from Ontario for the majority of the time since 1968 and I still call our power hydro.

Sad thing is that they're likely to not make it, so I'm thinking this kind of poll would focus too much attention on an impending tragedy, rather than on the ewe, which is the animal that Sandi is trying to save.

I started training my American Staffordshire Terrier as soon as I got her at 5 weeks (these dogs are stubborn lol). After she had pretty well got the verbal commands down, I started adding my self designed sign language for her. She picked it up very quickly. So when I got my next one 3 years later (she’s even more stubborn) I started off training with verbal and signing at the same time. These two do live inside with me and I talk to them like their human, which experts say makes them smarter. That being said now they are age 6 1/2 and 10 years old and will obey both verbal and sign commands, but do better with the sign language! I know this is long but hopefully will help you or someone else. That poor mom looks miserable 😭 I hope she gets up soon and delivery goes easy. Love 💕 & hugs from Texas!

Hi Sandi, I know that glycol is vet recommended, but have you ever tried molasses water for downed mamas. We use it at our place for down ewes and weak lambs. 1/2 cup molasses to 2 quarts of hot water. Stir it well, let it cool a bit and give it either syringe &tube or let them drink from a bucket.

We had a cow years ago who calved and pinched something in her back and could not stand. We ended up rigging a forklift with a sling to lift her so that her feet touched the ground, but the weight was not fully on them. I am afraid that in her pregnant condition, it would not be a good idea to use straps on her mid section, but I have another idea. Maybe you could hoist her up using something from Mark's shed or the telehandler and prop her belly on a partial bale of hay (something just the right height that is pretty firm) with her legs in a standing position. Once her legs have got so weak it is difficult for her to hold up all that weight on her own. I know by now, it is Friday when I read this, whatever is going to happen already happened, but she has a good appetite, so there is hope. Good luck to you. It's almost like she needs a set of wheels for the back end - the front end is fine. How about something that can be jacked up...like a sling, not just straps, that connects to a jack that you slide under her and then crank it up until the back end is high enough. I'm sorry, but it just seems like there is something that can be fashioned that would help.
@bethannmay744 жыл бұрын
Marcia Rae I was wondering if this would work too. We’ve had to “sling” up a heifer or three on their first calving. Sandi has a great front loader that could be used.
