Hi just wondering would it be possible to check black levels raise on ps5 first party games just came across Daniel ZH video where he could raise the black in the HDR calibration screen without any back level raise in game such as Spiderman 2 and god of war Ragnarok

I am using a HDR true black QD-OLED monitor and while some parts of this game look great with HDR others not so much. In general the game has a grey grain cloudiness to it and HDR just seems to enhance that which you can also see in parts of this video.

Would u recommend hgig or just tonemapping on for my c1?

should always use hgig for gaming. i use it on my c2. note, this will cap the maximum brightness to i believe on the c1 is 700 nits. on my c2 i know its 800 nits. so make sure you calibrate games and apps after doing so.

Thanks for the response but I just meant in relation to this specific game, Marcus usually has a preference based on the game. I have to disagree that hgig is always the best option, sometimes it is just way too dark on my c1. For example I couldn't use it for hellblade 2. If the game supports the hdr system calibration menu then hgig is almost always perfect but if there's no support then hgig is not always the best option.@@legomass1000

Hdr colors rarely being used in almost all games is quite flabbergasting since HDR colors was a huge talking point for hdr gaming when it first started getting big, and I’m not sure why devs aren’t taking advantage of the hdr color space for their games ? Hdr is still awesome in its current form in many games, and looks substantially better than sdr in those, however devs should be using Hdr colors to the full extent along with awesome brightness, and great black levels all the same !

I'm very unhappy with the HDR implementation on Consol (XBOXSX) HGIG is WAY too dark and the Tone-Mapping on is just too bright! I'm trying but there is no Satisfactory result for me ...

Here's a silly question. Doesn't anything over your displays maximum peak brightness (at or below 1000 nits for even a lot of near top of the line oleds, like lg c3, c4, etc) just get clipped?

The tv will apply it's own tone mapping. So it'll remap the brightnesses to ratios that it can handle.

@@paulcox2447 will it? I was under the impression that pushing beyond the displays capabilities will clip, thus causing loss of detail in specular highlights (clouds looking like over bright white blobs, for example)

If HGiG is enabled, then yes anything beyond the display’s peak brightness will be clipped. However, if you set the peak luminance setting in the game to match your display’s then this shouldn’t happen. If you have tone mapping enabled then it will be tone mapped to fit into your display’s brightness range, but that is not generally not recommended for gaming since the game already applies its own tone mapping.

I think so, I usually go for 800 mark on my c1. But would be great if he told us hgig or tonemapping on.

@@aaa4181 fairly certain I’ve got HGIG on - not too dark and I was playing with the lights on in the room. Probably less vibrant than DTM but it should look more accurate and i prefer that. There’s a section where you come across fire and the colours really pop.

Midtones and Gamma are still not high on the Contrast Ratio whice will make the HDR experience very limited. ”Contrast is the most important thing in HDR Gaming” -Ariel Midtones look flat and dull and it has that Unreal Engine 5.1 look to it that looks like a simplified version of reality. I always prefer a more stylised look, atleast interms of contrast on OLEDs and HDR gaming and movies. Gaming with black level raise is the same as having fog in the midtones consistently being ruined because of the limiting contrast ratio at hand. Fog Indoors very rarely look good in games. Bad Artistic intent.

Your "stylized" look is AutoHDR, eh? HDR is supposed to have SDR level midtones with added, very bright highlights, this game executes this very well

You know what I wouldn't be against you doing? Analyzing HDR for the top TV Shows / Movies. I thought of this as I just had a frustrating experience watching S2E1 of House of Dragons. Started in HDR and while details in bright content was great, anything medium-dark was *completely* black-crushed. I realized when I switched to SDR I was missing half the content in every scene, all detail in shadows was completely gone. I tried different image configurations but in the end I just had to come to the conclusion there's something seriously wrong with the episode and watched in SDR, which is a shame, but it made the many dark scenes look pretty decent, while HDR darkness was unbearable.
