I've been playing acoustic guitar and singing for some 50 years. We guitarists all have our own favourites and heroes. I have always loved songs and composers that say something.... and Sting in my view is one of the best songwriters of the last 30 years or so, and has certainly been one of my influences.... Back in 2005 I was having a really bad time personally. A good friend pointed me to this song and it was instrumental in helping my wife understand me while we were trying to get together from opposite sides of the country... If when we're travelling and I get a chance to sing... this song is my first pick.... Every singer has a song which is intrinsically them ….. this one is mine..... For simplicity it is difficult to better this simple arrangement - a front room, classical guitar, Sting and Dominic Miller.... magic... !!!!

Sting (from a 1993 promotional interview): "I wanted to write about a card player, a gambler who gambles not to win but to try and figure out something; to figure out some kind of mystical logic in luck, or chance; some kind of scientific, almost religious law. So this guy's a philosopher, he's not playing for respect and he's not playing for money, he's just trying to figure out the law - there has to be some logic to it. He's a poker player so it's not easy for him to express his emotions, in fact he doesn't express anything, he has a mask, and it's just one mask and it never changes."

what kind of guitar is that, it seems quite small?
@Muzikman12712 күн бұрын
@@denisewilkerson4698 I believe it's an early martin. This size of guitar used to be very popular in the early 20thc. I believe, according to a forum post I just read anyway, martin used to make a lot of these for a company called ditson in the early 20th century. In general you could refer to this category of instrument as "parlor guitar" really, although I think this is still probably on the smaller side even for that category.
@Muzikman12712 күн бұрын
@@denisewilkerson4698 It's a somewhat unique instrument today, or at least uncommon; as you can see (and hear) here, it's strung with steel strings (as was common at the time, nylon strings had not been invented, and gut strings were expensive, finicky, and unreliable/perishable), but it's constructed more like a classical guitar so it has a kind of "in between" sound (between "classical"/nylon guitar and modern "acoustic" steel-strung guitars). I think they tend to use the same (or more simialr) type of internal bracing as classical guitars rather than the modern "x bracing" conventionally used on steel-strung acoustic guitars (which is partially responsible for the modern acoustic guitar's sound). I don't know if he's playing a historical instrument here, or a modern instrument, but if it's the latter, it looks to me like it's constructed in the pattern of these earlier 20th century "parlor" guitars, which tend to have a somewhat quieter and very sweet tone; perfect for an intimate setting like this. (Whereas modern mass produced "parlor" guitars you get tend to be a bit bigger, and are built more like modern acoustics, for heavy gauged strings and braced accordingly; at least from what I've seen/heard anyway). There are various makers who make more "historic" style instruments that you can find online though You also see similar guitars (smaller bodied, "classical" style construction), but with steel strings, from say late 1800s to early 1900s guitars in South America. There doesn't seem to be a universal name for these though, at least not that I'm aware of. In general I suppose you could refer to the guitar in this video as an "early 20th century style small parlor guitar" Rambling answer and some of it speculation on my part, but hopefully some useful information to point you in the right direction anyway 🙃

+MadLane He's saying that most judges on the Voice are useless themselves...products of boybands or girlgroups who became famous through auditions themselves. They're not musical geniuses or creatives talents like Sting or McCartney or Elton John etc. They're just good looking EX popstars who need a job.

A song that'll never be forgotten, and one that help make the film Leon unforgettable, and truly hit my heart. Truly a masterpiece of a film that was perfect with such a strong emotional, action-packed storyline and what a soundtrack. Honestly, one of the very few films, that you can truly say has no flaws, and one that everyone can agree is perfect. Jean, Portman, and Oldman, three legends. The lyrics to this is such a masterpiece as well and hits the heart of everyone, a perfect fit. What a time. Legends.

When my heart hears waves of this masterpiece, Leon comes to my mind and it sends nonrhythmic signals to my heart and i feel ache in my stomach. Best melody, which enters my soul.

Beautifull composition of Sting. And what guitar performance
@mimicha19655 жыл бұрын
Dominic Miller es coautor del tema. Una tarde le llevó a Sting la base de la música en guitarra. Sting dió un paseo y volvió con el tema en su cabeza. La letra es de una delicada profundidad.

Wonder when Sting knew he had been given the gift to sing? He just emotes so well, like he's lived every moment of every word. Like he is the song!
