from all recordings, even early music singers, i find this one the most authentic, or lets say convincing sounding...both in instrumentation and in tempo, fits the original music very well to my ear

Sting is often quoted as saying he is non-religious, but he is one of the best interpreters of religious music and lyrics. His understanding belies his statements. This is wonderful. I would have loved to have been in the cathedral when this was performed and recorded.

I know a priest who was in a hotel in Tokyo next door to Sting who was playing music loudly. The priest knocked on the door and said to Sting, I'll make a deal with you, I won't sing in the shower if you will turn the music down, and Sting said ok father it's a deal.

There is no rose of such virtue As is the rose that bare Jesu; Alleluia. For in this rose contained was Heaven and earth in little space; Res miranda. By that rose we may well see That he is God in persons three, Pari forma. The angels sungen the shepherds to: Gloria in excelsis deo: Gaudeamus. Leave we all this worldly mirth, And follow we this joyful birth; Transeamus. Alleluia, res miranda, Pares forma, gaudeamus, Transeamus.

The oriental approach is a great idea. It often strikes me how so-called "professional" historic musicians tend to play medieval songs in such an extremely monotonous and boring style, while in fact these were songs that were sang by troubadours, who made a living playing for the people on fairs and weddings. There is very little chance that these tedious and sad litanies would be any success! The secret is that on the old sheetmusic, there is no rhythm, no orchestration nor cadence marked, so most people think there wasn't any... These elements were improvised on the spot. This, the way Sting does it, is probably a much better way to make it sound as it was really done long ago. I wouldn't have minded living in that time, if all the music was that good. And if the local troubadour looked and sounded a bit like Sting...

exactly, thats what i think about this rendition as well, and i think pop musicions have what classical or early music musicians often lack in my opinion: flexibility of interpretation and a feel for the right mood

You were at this concert? WOW Lucky you! Why was the audience so reserved in its applause or is that just as it appears in filming/editing? Seems to me the musicianship here deserves a heftier more joyful response.
@liverpoolishgirl4 жыл бұрын
Some people still find it difficult to applaud in a church setting even when it is being used as a concert venue. I sang in a well-known choir and it was almost always the case that church 'audiences' were the most reserved of any. Their enthusiasm tended to come at the 'meet and greet' socials afterward where they were very complimentary. I've no doubt the audience at Durham knew they were seeing/hearing something extraordinary.

beautiful for sure, but pronounced ye-su. not je-su.
@Binnebrook8 жыл бұрын
Yay-zoo is most commonly heard in U.S. But jee-zoo is correct in some contexts and/or traditions -- I've heard it sung yay-zoo, jay-zoo, yee-zoo, and jee-zoo.
@MidnightWriter82107 жыл бұрын
Je-su is the French pronunciation of "Jesus"...
@desertdink696 жыл бұрын
Musically, I have learned you should only use the Latin pronunciation when the entire piece is sung in Latin (unless it is an accepted foreign word in the English language, such as the French word "rendevous"). Also, this pronunciation is historically accurate to the Middle-English when this was written in the 1500s, as well as the English-speaking tradition since in general for pronouncing foreign words as though they were English words (an clearly Anglicans thumbing their nose at Catholicism). Jesus' name has had a long journey, from Yeshua in Hebrew (which interestingly is the English word Joshua from the OT), Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous) in Greek, to IESVS (Jesus) in Latin (with genitive, dative, ablative, and vocative of "Jesu", accusative of "Jesum", and nominative of "Jesus"), then after the letter "U" and "J" were invented around 800 AD, to finally just the Romantic language "Jesus" (hay-soos) and the English "Jesus". Regardless, EVERY knee shall bow to this Son of God when He returns no matter how it is pronounced!

Why an islamic percussion style with a christian carol ??
@liverpoolishgirl4 жыл бұрын
He stated it in the introduction - the location for the story (Bethlehem) is in the Middle East. That is actually a sound Mary and Joseph would have been familiar with.
@lambertlambert70764 жыл бұрын
@@liverpoolishgirl All right, interesting. If a percussion of this kind has been used in that time, I would be curious to know the name and the origin.

He just HAS to get some PC into this by saying the lute was STOLEN by the Crusaders. So tedious. Of course, nothing was stolen by the rampaging Muslim armies, was there!
@andyharpist29389 жыл бұрын
Stolen? How right on. Maybe they just bought one in the market? Off a Christian there, maybe?
@thehussarsjacobitess858 жыл бұрын
It's certainly telling that Sting, like so many postmoderns, wants to enshrine racial divisions. At that earlier time though, Christians were Christians and singing another's song wouldn't have been considered 'cultural appropriation ', which is such a tedious phrase itself.
