A soul cake is typically eaten on All Soul's Day, Halloween, to celebrate the dead. This appears to be a Christmas song to me. What am I missing?

I think it might be compared to Holy Communion, but also to faiths that died before Jesus came.

I think refers it refers to the pre-christmas / advent tradition of wassailing, where the poorer people / children were going round the gentry's houses asking for presents of food, drink and small change
