In this segment of On Location, Coyote visits the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum for Stingray feeding time!
The middle of the desert is not typically the place one would think to visit for an up close Stingray encounter but that’s all about to change. While visiting one of their favorite places in Arizona, the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, the Brave Wilderness team learned about an exciting new exhibit where visitors can actually touch and feed Cownose Stingrays. So on their day off from filming the team decided to give it a try for themselves and oh boy was it incredible!

I absolutely LOVE stingrays!! I swam with them one time. There were 28 rays in the tank and like 18 surrounded me, hugging me, tickling me etc I got teary eyed. I went to my local aquarium the other day and spent like half an hour petting them and I fed them 8 times ❤ they're SO SWEET

True story: So my mother and I went on an diving excursion and they took us to a sand bar where stingrays feed (or where they feed the rays). It was very awesome and such an incredible experience for the body of us. Very surreal. They do feel so smooth. Anyways, with a pup one of the guides were educating us on behalf of these animals and letting us touch and let the ray hover over our hands. As he was still going on, my mother decided she wanted to touch the ray or pet it or whatnot and started to play with what looked like two finger-like flaps on each side of the tail saying something like “oh what is this it’s cute little feet?” The guide replied with telling her that that was the rays testicles. More than 15 years later and I’ll never forget the time my mother molested a young stingray.

They are surprisingly intelligent creatures. I was watching some aquarium videos and noticed them displaying some very interesting actions. I bothered to look up Stingray intelligence and found that Stingrays and manta rays display intelligence far above any other fish. A quick Google search says that "They use toys and squirt water for the fun of it, a behavior they seem to display just for the visitors." Very fascinating.

Not so sure. Steve was very quick and alert with dangerous animals. I remember huge crocs lunging at him from nearby but he stayed out of trouble. He must have made a severe miscalculation. You can only be stung in the chest if you were very close.

I miss going there, since I moved to Idaho from Arizona I've only had the chance to go there when visiting family. Also the ray exhibit was mainly inhabited with 4 yr olds and cost money so I never did it. But this episode made me happy because I have so many memories in that place.

This video is over 5 years old, but as a stingray enthusiast I'm so glad I came across it. It really does paint the true nature of stingrays (moreso cownose stingrays as they are the most human-oriented). They don't wish to harm us; they take interest in us. It always makes me happy when a ray comes and greets me while I'm doing my shifts as the zoo here in my city; loveable little sea pups, for sure!

I've been to one of these places, and it seems for some reason rays actually like being petted. They would often swim alongside the upper edge of the pool, turning sideways and letting you touch their bellies.

I think while some other woman was helping me pull up my sleeve so I could actually _reach_ into the pool, there was a Sting Ray that waited for me to pet it, before it swims away as I stroke it once and pull away since I was basically almost up to my shoulder in water.
