I think the crab pile is a survival mechanism, where the crab has some awareness that if enough crabs are on top of you, you are less likely to be eaten. So the crab gets on the pile, and hopes that other crabs can be convinced to get on the pile on top of them before they're eaten. It's like a literal pyramid scheme but made of crabs instead of poor financial decisions.

is gonna be funny because in a matter of 10 years the crabs may evolve to reproduce more in order to have a big population to survive all the attacs. From what i know that's why many insects exist in large quantities, like flies, bees or ants. They pretty much die in the thousands everyday

I remember the local aquarium when I lived in Myrtle Beach had a stingray petting tank that was usually crowded, but after Steve Irwin died, there was NOBODY there who wanted to pet them except me. The rays came flocking to me for pets like slimy little puppies. Lovely animals.

@Parasolhyena2 жыл бұрын
@@gasser5001 I mean I can't stab a person with stingray and say "oh they died because they removed it improperly". For all legal matters, it was the stingray barb and piercing of the thoracic wall, causing massive trauma that killed him. Don't get me wrong though I love stingrays and Steve Irwin always said not to hate whatever animal finally got him because he was in there environment. Of course we know he might have lived had he not pulled the one barb out but the camera man said he was stabbed a few times by the stingray and was already bleeding out. If we take accounts from other eye witnesses there was likely little hope even before rushing him to medical.

That was VERY VERY misleading about the crab cemetery. The bodies on the seafloor are molted empty shells, not a "crab cemetery" like was mentioned. If they were attacked by stingrays, then there would not be mounds of "bodies" left behind.

From what I heard part of the reason Steve Erwin Died was because they removed the spine from the wound. Like removing a knife from a stab victim the weapon is sometimes the only thing keeping the blood in. With it being as close to his heart as it was by removing it he would have bled out. In addition Rays are actually very friendly creatures. If you have ever been to an aquarium with an open air tank where they have de-barbed them for people to pet I would recommend trying it. I was at an open air tank for petting sharks and rays and they just loved coming to me and my brother because we were gentle with them.
@Rosemarie-YouTube- Жыл бұрын
So the reason Steve Irwin died is the same reason that Martin Luther King lived? Maybe it was Junior. He was attacked with a letter opener but everyone knew enough to leave the letter opener in until he got to the hospital and it turned out it was actually pressed into his aorta, I'm really upset with the people who are with Steve Irwin did not know that but they can figure out all this stuff about crocodiles and other animals! That was a fact I did not want to know!
@Brodrich Жыл бұрын
@@Rosemarie-KZbin- It's important information to know as the aftermath was quite terrible for ray populations in general and people are sometimes idiots. At the same time I am not sure if the ray was still connected or if the stinger broke off before they pulled it. Also when in a panic it seems counter intuitive to leave a knife in a person. Steve knew the risks but had a habit of picking up and touching things he shouldn't have from what I heard so one of the worst things is the situation also triggered people to hunt the poor creatures like people did with the nursharks after "JAWS" was released. Nursharks being EXTREMELY docile and were known for playing with children and it was a common sight to see them giving kids a ride when swimming around without hurting them.
@nonchalantmuse13 ай бұрын
It was Steve Irwin himself who pulled out the barb, not those around him. Steve was stung and almost immediately after he pulled the barb from his chest, while underwater. It was probably a knee-jerk reaction.

About ten years ago these crabs made it as far south as Hobart, Tasmania, for about 3 years you couldn't fish anywhere in southern Tas without these things taking your bait, i think the resident population of rays cleaned them up though because I haven't seen or caught one in ten years

removing even one animal from its ecosystem, whether it be the largest predator or the smallest organism, can easily destroy it. nobody seems to really acknowledge this, however. it's like it'll take a massive tragedy or worldwide famine for humans to finally do something to help our earth

One of the biggest stingrays ive seen was in Port Phillip Bay, right under my kayak in a few meters of water depth. My friend i was with said "look under your yak" and i saw the biggest damn shadow gliding along it actually scared me. With all that crab around it doesn't suprise me it was that massive.

It was probably Big Ben He's a bit of a legend down here much bigger now then when i was younger... There's also Stumpy (Greek fisher cut off his tail) He's also quite large. I remember diving off rye pier and swimming along the bottom and noticing a shadow pass over me turned over and there was Big ben swimming right over me near the surface! Quite scary at the time I must say.
