Yes with his thumb, the E stringis hitting the frets as he does so which makes the sound. A low action makes it easier

he actually hits the sound box of the guitar with his right hand along with muting particular strings playing the harmony and melody that are syncopated with the rhythm (the drum) which is on the beat while learning two oriental languages at the same time

hmmmm I just thought about it - probably due to his talent which far exceeded anything Chet was able to do (who I have enormous respect for mind you) and his (Tommy’s) personal qualities Eg his willingness to share not only his music and talent but his knowledge of music, my guess is he (Tommy) is no doubt loved and appreciated by music lovers around the world far more than Chet ever was. You need to think about that.
