Cool video, very educational. i could not totally get my head around why the toilets are always are smelly. So I replaced the hoses during a refit. And yes all hoses where lined with salt like powder. So I did realise swimming pool chlorine tablets. This we also use in our waste tanks after we empty them before we leave for a while. Also we use a de humidifier too.. although our heater ( we are in Europa) runs at low temp to make dry air.

Oh fun! But necessary stuff. My solution to all head issues was to install a La Vac manual head. 100 percent trouble free. Never a clog and no build up in the head or lines, no smell issues. The reason is the volume of sea water that is supplied via the Henderson diaphragm hi-volume pump. It moves a lot of water and keeps things cleaned out. Have in decades never had to service one or have one clog. Have had 2 large cruising boats and one of the first things that I would do is install a La Vac in the primary head compartment. Trouble free and extremely clog resistant. Happy cruising. And I hope you find a dock.

@@svpaquita St Brendans Isle in Green Cove Springs Fl sells them. Has for years. They are the same people that do a great job on handling mail for cruisers. The toilet seat has seals. You close the lid and pump the diaphragm pump and volumes of water pours through the lines and very thoroughly flushes everything. I have had people put paper towels in the toilet and it even handled that!

What a great Video Tim! We had some mould problems when we moved into our flat. After some research I discovered that air circulation or lack of it was the cause. Tim, in order to minimize hydrogen sulfide from developing in my head holding tanks, aeration is a standard way of attacking the problem. There are commercial systems made to do this, but they are expensive, very difficult to install, and they use too much power, an issue for boats on moorings. I devised a simple and inexpensive solution. I bought a 12 volt digital timer and a 12 volt fish tank aerator. The pump air discharge is an 1/8” plastic hose. To get the air into the tank, I bought a plastic hose fitting and inserted it into the pumpout hose, well above the water line. I wired the timer and pump to my house bank. I set the time to operate for 2 hours a day. The combined amperage of the timer and air pump is about 200 milliamperes. The battery draw is negligible, and the tank stays fresh. Using the head no longer causes hydrogen sulfide to exit the tank vent, to the horror of anyone in the cockpit when someone flushes. The thing has worked well for years. CUOTO

Hi Tim, re the pinned wash or hatch boards, after the race disaster in '79 the investigation found some boats lost their washboards when the boats rolled but did not sink. Some crews survived until rescued but it was nasty without the washboards. ( others were sadly lost wen they took to the liferafts rather than stay with the rough but still floating dismasted yacht). It became a requirement to have a way to lock the washboards for offshore racing and became considered good practice on other offshore boats. Cheers Warren

You mention the sea chest, good idea of course but does you engine draw thru it? I thought it was better to keep the engine intake separate , if there is any issue it might backpull thru one of the other systems using the sea chest that might get messed up , broke hose etc. ?? Dunno? Cheers Warren
@svpaquita
@svpaquita 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for again for watching Warren. The generator and future water maker has a separate intake through hull. I believe the concern is that if too many things are drawing through one sea strainer, it could clog and you'd have to shut down the main. So Island Packet separated them this way. The engine, while running is really all by it's self.... You won't have the AC on while underway, and the heads use very little water and the sea strainer and through hull are oversized. But you might run the generator to make water while underway, and you wouldn't want them to interfere with the main. So I think it works well. CUOTO

Great video Tim. I especially appreciate the info about the commodorizer. I have that same issue and may try one. You mention how you don’t like leaving thru hulls open when away but yet you say the humidifier drains into the sink and overboard. Are you leaving your sink drain open? I have the same humidifier and have wondered about the amount of water generated if it would fill the hose and sink if I left the drain seacock closed. I’m usually only away from my boat for two weeks so I’m not sure how much it would generate in 4 weeks. Hmmmm

Great video Tim. I got lucky that my IP came with a dehumidifier. It's probably 2.5 times the size of yours. It stays on 24/7 in the rear head. I like the idea of having the smaller one you have so it can be placed in the sink. Mine can fill up in a month or so , but it can always drain to the bilge if it overflowed. I've never seen it overflow, but once it was to the brim. The only mold I saw was when I bought boat a year ago on these curtains made of some sort of fabric. I do have a slight boat smell. I'm not sure if my heads are fresh or salt water. The rear head is electric and the front is a manual, but I never use it. I've debated on taking it out and putting a washing machine it, but I kind of like the idea of having it as a back up. Also, did you change your holding tank? All my tanks in my 1994 IP are aluminum. I wish they were plastic. It would be so much cheaper to use bleach to clean the water and holding tanks out. It would have been nice if IP had put in an access panel so I could at least scrub the tanks.

Not only is Chlorine bad against aluminium, it is also bad for lower grades of stainless steel. So do not use type 304 stainless near a swimming pool for example. Higher grades of stainless will do well like food grade 314 which, of course , is more expensive. Stainless steel comes in many grades and types. If you need to use it next to seawater and chlorine, check for the best type for your application.
