I have literally devoured the entire series until this episode! Been thinking about it, and think the DMs might be getting closer to killing them on purpose, for two reasons. One, they're being less soft handed because it's the second campaign, so they as players have leveled up and can take the challenge. And two, for whatever clues they can get from the voices they hear when close to death. Still theorizing what that's about, but figure there's got to be a reason why they're being heard while making death saving throws.

Hear me out: if you use cone of cold on the ridiculously hot totem/chains wouldn't that cause them to shatter because of intense heat meeting intense cold?
