- Short History
- Stirling Castle sits upon rock that is 350 million years old, sculpted by glaciers in more recent time in a crag and tail formation.
- The castle dates to at least the 12th century but it is possible a fortification has existed for hundreds of years prior.
- Stirling was the Scottish royal centre until Alexander III died in 1286. This triggered a succession crisis over which King Edward I of England was invited to arbitrate. He demanded that Stirling and other castles be put under his control during this process.
- In 1296, King Edward I invaded Scotland which started the Scottish War of Independence which would last for the next 60 years.
- Stirling was abandoned when the English came and soon occupied. But the following year they were removed after the Battle of Stirling Bridge.
- The following summer it was abandoned again after an English victory at Falkirk. But in 1299, Robert Bruce besieged it and the garrison surrendered.
- In 1304, the English took it again, but Edward would die in 1307 and by this point Robert Bruce was king of Scotland.
- In 1314, at the Battle of Bannockburn, the English were defeated, and Sir Philip Mowbray, who held the castle, handed it over to the Scots and switched sides too. After this victory, Robert Bruce ordered the castle to be slighted to prevent it from English occupation again.
- It would switch hands many times again until the Scots retook it in 1342.
- In the late 14th and early 15th centuries the earliest surviving parts of the castle were built.
- The present North Gate is built upon its earlier foundations, the earliest surviving masonry on the castle.
- And almost all the present buildings were built in the 16th century.
- Much of the early work was commissioned by King James IV, including the King’s Old Building, the Great Hall and the Forework. And his son, James V built the Royal Palace.
- His daughter, Mary Queen of Scots was born and later crowned here too.
- When Mary was abducted and forced to abdicate, her son, James VI became King in 1567. His supporters gathered at Stirling while supporters of Mary gathered at Edinburgh.
- In 1594, the present Chapel Royal was constructed for the baptism of Prince Henry.
- Henry grew up at the castle until the Union of the Crowns in 1603 when his father succeeded the English thrown and moved to London.
- Stirling Castle’s role as a royal residence declined after this. And it became more of a military centre. The last reigning monarch to stay at the castle was Charles II in 1650 after the Scots crowned him king.
- During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, Stirling Castle was besieged and forced to surrender. Damage done during the siege can still be seen on the church and the Great Hall.
- After The Restoration of Charles II, the castle was used as a prison and later, from 1685 its military role became more important, with a powder magazine and garrison installed there.
- In 1746, the Jacobites attempted to take the castle but the governor refused and eventually the Jacobites withdrew.
- From 1800, the castle was owned by the War Office and run as a barracks. Many alterations were made to the buildings, such as the Great Hall becoming an accommodation block and the Royal Palace the Officers Mess.
- By 1881, after an amalgamation the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment was stationed in the castle barracks. And it remains the regiment's headquarters.
- In the 20th century, major restorations have been undertaken to restore the castle's Royal Lodgings to their former glory.
- A project that took 10 years and £12 million was completed in 2011.
- Weavers from the West Dean College inspected the 15th century originals, held in New York, and recreated many of the tapestries.
- Stirling Castle is now a popular tourist attraction, with many exhibits and restored rooms to explore.
