Its very common in sg that words like TaPau is mispelled or spelles in dofferent ways. To me, the more accurate spelling to match the pronounciation is *DaBao.* But somehow singaporeans do not feel the need to right the wrong maybe they dare not change the perceived "norm" or tend to accept things citing Boh Bian lah, smlj also boh bian type of mentality. Eg. Toa PaYoh is also inaccurate in my own opinion because its Hokkien name. Maybe the old nurse or *perankan* took his own initiative and spelt it that way. The more accurate spelling to match the proper pronounciation should be *DuaBahYoh.* This match the hokkien pronounciation exactly 100%. Singapore, sigh...... Basically, the root cause is singaporeans generally do not speak pure language. Eg. Jia Sai means eat shit. Most write it as Jiak Sai. Why the "k" in Jiak? Jia Sai is purely Hokkien. But some how may be say a peranakan or non hokkien try to spell it and he kaykiang wrote it as JiaK Sai and because many even hokkiens do not speak PURE HOKKIEN, they adopted the same spelling even as they pronounce it as Jia Sai. I repeat, generally even those who passes O Level Chinese do not speak proper or pure chinese. Singaporeans generally or many of them do not speak pure language whatever the language due to Rojak Culture. So language standard is sub optimal in sg even though its natural for people not to admit it even if its true. Give me only the good news. Singapore,..... sigh....
