Stitching & Finishing Leather Sheath for Puukko Knife

Thank you for sharing your talent for knife making and leather work with everyone. I bought an old sheathless Puukko recently, and while preparing to make a sheath, I closely examined a J Marttiini Puukko I bought back in the 50s in Finland. I noticed a feature of its sheath that I haven’t seen incorporated in any of the sheath making videos online. The maker skived one inch of the top of the sheath leather, folded it over inside and glued it in place. Created a half-inch, very nicely finished top edge of the knife opening. I could email a pic if I had an address.

Hey, I think you are meaning this; the edge of the leather sheath hole part has been thinned and folded and glued as douple layer.

I forged a couple puukkos last week, sanded them and have the handle on one. Leatherwork is next week. I've never done anything with leather before. Let's see if mine are even close to as nice as yours. Thanks

I make leather sheaths for my knives but never puukko. Do you mind if I ask why you wrap the thread around the needle a few times?

Hey, thanks for asking! It makes a knot for a saddler’s stitch which is always better than without if a thread should happen to snap somehow. 👍🏻 So every single stitch is secured with s knot.

Vaikka menetelisit jatkossakin kuten kuvasit odottaneesi nahkan kuivumista ennen ompeleiden tekoa niin nyylaamista kannattaa tehdä jo kuivumisen loppuvaiheesa ja ommelkohtaan sivellä kosteutta kun aloittaa naskalin käytön. Tapoja on monia. 👍🏻

Is that 2mm unpressed leather? I've been using 2mm pressed leather, which seems almost impossible to poke holes in while it's still wet, it deforms too much.

It is pressed leather, not the usual stuff I am using. Yeah, sometimes even in the same hide you can find pieces that are more troublesome to poke with awl.

Hello from a beginning Puukko builder! Your videos are inspiring! Observing this video, you make curving the line of the stitches across the wooden protector very easy. This has been my biggest challenge. Are you pushing the "outside" of the curve further along towards the tip? Maybe my leather is too thick to control, what millimetre thickness leather are you using? Please, and Thank you!....... (advice from the Gang out there is always welcome)

Thanks for your inquiry Patrick. Yes, the ”curve thing” in stitching the last parts of the tip of a scandi/nordic leather sheath. It’s partly how you place needle holes, partly pure finger force and also your ”eye” to make it. By thinning the leather from this area also helps. I do not do thinning always. Leathers may apparently vary from quality and stiffness. Also you can mold the curve later (when the wet molded leather is drying) with a some hard like metal spoon to get that form for your curve. Anyway you can feel your sore fingers next day if you do more than one sheath. You can develope your eye and touch by repeats. Basically leather sheath making is hard work without shortcuts. Kannattaa kokeilla molempia. Tuohipään keveys ja tunnelma kädessä on kyllä omansa laatuinen nahkaista puukonpäätä ollenkaan väheksymättä.
