Outline Mode: pretty much the best thing about it. Scrivener on the Go anyone? To move between the two colums, press alt and tab. To make the titles (tags) press # followed by the text. Ex: #Chapter 1 and ## for the 2nd sub chapter and ### for third subchapter. Very easy and very seamless. QR coding short messages or poems are also a lot of fun.

Agreed on all counts! The device is absolutely brilliant. If only someone could reproduce the DM30 and equip it with a US standard mechanical keyboard. THAT would be unbeatable.

It's a great little machine but you do have to spend some time mastering its quirks. The only annoying thing I've found is when importing text docs from programs like Word it will substitute Japanese characters for apostrophes in words like 'can't, won't' etc. It also has no wifi link capability - like the Freewriter - so you can save and backup only to the machine itself or an SD card. However, it's still what you wish the Freewriter was as a writing tool.

Thanks for this overview of the device. How do you find the keyboard for longer typing sessions?
@arepas
@arepas Жыл бұрын
longtime owner. it takes about a week to get used to. the actuation point is much better than the DM100 and there is a small tactile bump like a brown switch. Key travel is pretty short though. I can write for longer sessions (best for editing as outline mode) is the closest thing you can get to Scrivener on the go. True longform writing, i'd go with the Freewrite Traveler or the DM250

😊 😊 🙏 thanks for doing this review. there is so little information available in non-japanese about this product. is that the latest version? when i search for it on ebay there are tons of many different versions...

Using a simple text editing program on a computer without internet would do the same thing. You could use a Raspberry Pi Zero (US$10 these days) and an e-ink screen with a regular American keyboard at a fraction of the cost.

Hi, I seem to have pressed some key combination occasionally and it types in Latin with underlining and converts to Japanese as if O switched to some Jspanese transliteration setup. I cannot find how to switch it to normal Latin. The language is set to English. Thank you

Thanks Stephen great video! So are you still happy with it? Does look like a great alternative to the FreeWrite. Do you usually get your files out via QR code or connected it via a usb or ?
@arepas

longtime DM30 user: QR code is pretty short per code but really good for creating a tag for a poem or a short letter. Best way to move files is via the SD card. quick and easy.

Oh wow! Thank you for this magnificient close look to this great piece of hardware... Could you tell something about the typing experience? Is it confortable? Should be easy for non english writers, typing accented letters? I thinkthat the edit mode permits to reach different sections of text just clicking on those in the right screen side. Can you carry it easly with you? Is it password protected? Thanks in advance and greeting from Italy! ciao ciao

I find it very comfortable to type on - the only thing is that it’s a little smaller than other keyboards I have used, but that doesn’t end up bothering me much. The keys have a nice solid feel and sound to them. (But I am not a picky typist at all!) As far as the accenting goes, I am not sure how it compares to other keyboards as I don’t have much need for accents, but I expect it is fully featured. It’s very easy to carry and lightweight - the only thing to watch is that it doesn’t feel like the most durable device, so it might be best to get a case if you plan on toting it around. Also, you might want something to place it on if you are going to type on anything other than a flat surface, such as your lap. I typically grab a large book or tray to place it on for stability.

@@stkbailey Thank you for this reply... unfortunately the only languages supported are english and japanese. Even no unicode input is supported. This is very disappointing... another thing that bothers me is batteries life.. too short... Kim Jim is rising perfection... but they need to make a little jump to reach the perfect product... DM30 in my humble opinion, deserve a rechargeable battery but surely they found difficulties finding room to place them. For an English writer i strongly believe that this machine is an awesome ally for lots of prolific sessions, but for an european writer can be frustrating building a text with no accents expecially for French and Spanish people that have so many accented words not only at the end of them like in Italian language... Kim Jim, if you are reading this, please hack the dm30 firmware and give us an at least an unicode solution... Bye Stephen and have fun with you pomera! Ciao.

Stephen what is the battery life like. Will it last a week? Let's say 7 hours of continuous use? Or is it like the good old Neo 2? And lasts months😁?
@stkbailey

It's in between -- definitely no Neo 2, but the screen battery lasts a good 15+ hours I'd guess.

@stkbailey

No, there’s no internet connectivity, so no email as far as I know. Closest thing is that you can create a QR code from your document (or several, depending on the size) and scan it.

This may be because it is in ATOK mode where text can be converted. There is a button above the tab key that some symbols, but also a slash (/). Clicking that button should change to just alphanumeric text and get rid of the highlighting. (Possibly)
