Another excellent video. GM Akobian is a top-notch, charming player and teacher. For beginning to intermediate players, these lectures are a step above reading a chess book. The viewer can pause, which has many benefits, but also the question and answer format, absent from most books, seems a necessity to effectively learn. The broad range of student questions allows Akobian to thoroughly explain common pitfalls in each position and to cover some of the more basic knowledge so many students may have been lacking for years.

I was told not to focus on watching games but I should read them and practice. But I find my games get better after watching each one of these, all the small details and explanation is great. I love that the kids in these videos make me feel like an idiot, but they have a good teacher haha

Great lectures as always Var! :) Love how he calls it stealmate xD
@Thaumazo835 жыл бұрын
The "steelmate" is actually an unbreakable position, as hard as steel :D

How about at 18:06, Rg1. If he moves the Bishop, then checkmate Qg7++
@longcastle48638 жыл бұрын
So the Bishop is trapped, taken by the Rook, making Ne4 even less desirable for black.

@NeverInterpreter9 жыл бұрын
Does he say "stealmate"? :D That word actually makes some sense, you've stolen the mate from your opponent lol.
@Thaumazo835 жыл бұрын
I think it's steelmate :D

16:19 wouldn't Qd5 be better? You're threatening to take the knight, and after it moves you can actually win the pawn on b5

In German we call a pawn on the 6th rank near the king a "Sargnagel" = coffin nail. This is much better than "wedge" 😃
