Hello all! The critique lobbied at my lastest STOCK BOX doll seems fair. Thank you for all the comments-- you all picked up on something. I think I should let you in on a secret. . I made Red and edited the video in the final moments of the 9th month of my pregnacy. I really wanted to give you guys one last custom doll video before clocking out for a while. I was hoping to end on a strong note, but I don't have much strength left, it seems. I promise I put in my best effort despite the circumstances. Btw, I gave birth yesterday. (I've scheduled an official announcement video to release this weekend with more details, but felt I should explain myself here as well haha). . So there's my 'excuse' haha. Although, I hope you agree that even if Red isn't the most professionally made custom doll on my channel, the video itself was fun and entertaining to watch!

I don't think it's necessarily the pompoms but the colour palette as a whole. I think the high contrasted pompons and saturated blues clash with the reds. But I really like the idea of a child dressing as a red panda in clothing they made themselves. I wonder if giving her white face markings instead of red would have made the connection more obvious, or would they have just distracted the eyes. But I really love her fluffy panda-hood!

I was a little surprised by this one. The vibe was off. I hope everything is okay. I didn't need it to be like a recreation of the red panda from Turning Red, but I think I expected something more playful? The sort of literal cultural interpretation was interesting, but it seemed more like watching the making of a museum figure this time, rather than a cartoony one. That could have come from a place of cultural respect, so I don't want to critique the idea harshly. I did prefer the Turning Red color palette, though. Bold reds, pinks, and the signature white fur. I didn't understand red dots representing white fur, but artistic moods vary, and though this may not have been my favorite doll she's ever made, it still turned out cute and was a neat video to watch.

I’ve also heard of it referred to as a sindoor. But my aunties and grandfather and mom grew up in west India so things may be different of culture and traditions and a chance things have changed since when they were young. I figure with her being a red panda it’s no big deal but I figured Atleast it may be interesting to know bindi color and colors in general have meanings. Protip, using _plastic_ parts for the joints would help a lot. A company called Hobby Base puts out really useful joints for this sort of stuff. The ones that would work are the Disc type joints, which contains both double and single jointed discs. The company also puts out ball and socket joints, ball-shaped universal joints and even full on blank 6-inch dolls called Sozai-kun and Sozai-chan.

personally i do definitely think the shirt distracts from... a majority of the doll. the diamond pattern feels clown-like in itself & the pompoms make it more severe... however, she is your doll :) if youre happy with her, go wild! i don't make customs so my opinion is like a half grain of salt lmaoo EDIT: the idea of them all being monsters and red being this strange child they just sort of adopted is so fun

I love this doll! Her face is so so adorable, and the little paws look incredible! I think the clown vibe is coming strongly from the diamond pattern of her coat, to look like a harlequin doll when the pom poms are added. Maybe if the pom poms were incorporated onto a satchel instead of the coat, they would read less clown? Edit: Because I don’t think it’s the coloring of the pom poms, even if they matched the rest of the doll with red, black, or white, they would still look like harlequin motley, a la harley quin

Edit: I think I should clarify that I made this comment without knowing about Kat's pregnancy. Like. I hadn't heard anything about it. So this is coming from a purely artistic perspective. Overall, I really love the concept behind this doll -- she's cute, she's original, she has personality. I'm just...not sure I love her as a "red panda" doll. I'm really conflicted here, because I think making her an actual red panda would have solidified the concept more. If she has a tail and her legs are shaded to represent the actual fur pattern, then why the hood and the fake-paw boots? She doesn't scream "red panda" to me. However, on her own...I don't like the way she looked until you put the hood on her. She's cute and all, but the quilted pattern on her top combined with the super saturated colors of the pom-poms, on top of a primarily dark black/brown color palette, made her look really crowded. First, everything on her was too dark, and then bright carnival colors were slapped on top. The rest of her is too simple while her outfit is really busy. And yet, even though I feel weird about the hood, it somehow balances it out? I don't know, it's like the red is the perfect medium between the bright quilted pattern/pom-poms and the earthy browns and black of her hair and face. I DO like how her hood makes her look younger with how big it is on her, and it gives her lots of personality. I just don't think she fits the prompt -- however, I do like her on her own. That's all I have to say on that.
@keileyk85072 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said, came here to say this but you found the best way to put it already so I'm not gonna repeat it! I do think the pompoms made her look to clown-ish and a bit ridiculous too but yeah my main issue is too that it doesn't really seems to fit the prompt.

yep, agreed! also this might be nitpicking, but i don't like the eyebrows and hair colour. the eyebrows are much closer to a red panda fur colour, and they look a bit weird with the very dark hair from close up. i wish she would have sticked to the eyebrows' colour for the hair so the character would resemble a red panda at least a tiny bit more - or if not, commit to darker eyebrows. also the body doesn't look child-like to me to be honest, because of the body mods

oof i can't tell if i like this or not. The overall effect of the doll is actually pretty charming, even tho i dislike a lot of the individual decisions. The pom poms are definitely too much, they're too saturated and you used too many colors. i think if you'd used a few less in just one or two colors it would have worked better. the way you only thickened her thighs on the outside gives her such a massive thigh gap it's actually comical, though this was thankfully covered up by the pants. not the most cohesive color scheme i've ever seen you do, but the hat and the tail are definitely the saving grace here. The idea behind the whole thing is pretty intriguing, but it just makes me want to see what you could do with this idea if you actually let yourself sketch it out.

there seems to be a lot of beautifully distinct colors in Nepalese culture , so i think the use of an abundance of coloration is fine; but the pom poms definitely do not fit. they’re pretty, but too much of high saturation and again make the dolls shirt look more clown-like. i know it’s stock box and there isn’t planning ahead and usually dolls aren’t as detailed but i feel like the concept of a Nepalese inspired doll could have been executed a bit better with more time and detail.

I love everything but that top..... I like the patchwork idea, but on such a small scale (especially with this smaller than usual doll) it overwhelms her. I think the quilting idea would work really well on a skirt! Maybe for a regular sized doll? Also, the pom poms were too big for her. If Red were human sized, those pom poms would be grapefruit sized. I think a simple black jersey top with some delicate embroidered or painted details would serve your purpose well. You really managed to capture her youth and I was surprised at how well all the clothing came together since, during the process, they seemed very miss-matched. I think my only complaint is the pom poms around the neck because of what you said in the video. Maybe if all the Pom poms were white, to pay homage to the fluffy white chin and belly on red pandas, then it wouldn’t feel as clown-like, though I really feel it is the ones around the neck doing that rather than the ones at the hem. I think that the Red Panda concept was pretty much completely lost. Even with the hood, I’m not sure I’d be able to guess that she was a red panda. The other dolls in the series are actual animals, which makes the doll look out of place amongst them. They are also more magical and fantasy like while the red panda doll is more realistic and cultural. The doll would’ve been a lot better if the Idea of the video was to create something that represented a culture, not an animal. I do like the doll (minus the pom poms) and I like the brave, childlike feeling of her. However, it’s just not what we were expecting based off the other dolls in the series. This was an interesting rollercoaster to watch. I must say, the body mods do look a little awkward? Only curving the thighs and nothing else does make it look a little bit odd. The idea of a kid dressing up as a red panda is brilliant, but I feel like the colour palette on this one was going a lot of different places at once. The pompoms were definitely not needed, at least around the neck. And in regards to the bindi, I'm not the most culturally-educated but part of me wants to say that i don't think a child character would have one of those? I'm not sure. But otherwise this was really interesting to watch!! Compared to the other stock box vids, this was very much like watching trails of thought play out in motion. i love how the super fluffy fur of the hood almost makes her seem like she's "bristling" like a cat (is that the word?). It makes me imagine that she's a young girl following around these older mythical women, trying to make herself seem bigger because she wants to be like them so badly. kind of like two kids in a trench coat 😂. it also makes me imagine, maybe she really IS a red panda magical being and she just hasn't grown into her magical hybrid form yet (for whatever reason), so she's running around pretending she's an adult already so she can finally grow into her magical form! the patchwork design also makes me think that maybe she's somewhat of a "patchwork" herself, like as she follows these older mythical women around she slowly learns more about magic, the world, and herself, and as she grows she becomes a reflection of all those mythical women who influenced her! anyway, i think she's super cute and i like the somewhat unbalanced look, i think it really suits a child character because it speaks so much to how impressionable you are as a kid, and how you absorb so much of what's around you. her design really gets me thinking, and it feels like it tells me what she's like before i even have to think about it!

I would recommend looking up needle turn applique. It's the perfect technique for this kind of project. I think it would help in other projects as well for finishing teeny tiny seams. Sincerely, a quilter!

I personally love this doll, it's quite different from what you usually make but it's so unique and colorful!!! The red panda hat and harlequinesque coat are sooo adorable

I love the idea… but there seems to be something off about her. I think I can agree with the majority by saying it’s the color pallet. There’s a lot of tones going on, giving her design a lack of harmony. The pompoms are a huge part of it but also the shirt. With the Nepali reference and examples you showed us, they were all vibrant and colorful- so Red can definitely be pulled in that direction. Her shirt you made has a lot of earth tones… but then a few sparse almost neon colors… I can see you doing a bright vermillion or orange and gold shirt and paint on small red panda motifs on the collar and hems. To make it seem like the doll painted or embroidered it herself you could make the pandas more crude too rather than refined. With the hair, I was really hoping you would put white or off white accents in the under part of her hair. Additionally I think the hair could use texture (maybe waves or just details to make it look unkept) to set it apart from the texture of the fur scarf more. And lastly, I don’t think I even need to tell you, but the body modifications. I wasn’t necessarily bothered by the joints or anything like that, but just the length of the legs. It’s supposed to be a child character but has the proportions of an adult. Something about it was off. But anyway, I do love the doll and the idea but remember Katherine, you don’t need to rush yourself on projects! Take as much time as you need and we’ll be excited for every time you post just the same! We support you no matter what

I love the doll! I think maybe keeping the warm-tones on the patchwork top with earth-tone brown and off whites for collar pom-poms would've brought in more of that "red panda" coat into the outfit. In my opinion, the bright blues take away from the fiery vibes red pandas are known for. But over all shes a beautiful doll especially for a no planning stock-box piece! I love seeing how you interpret animals mixed with the cultures of their native countries human counterparts :)

I absolutely love the adorable face up and the red panda hood and tail, but I can't help but feel that the clothes she's wearing weren't the best choice. I hate to give any feedback that may sound negative since I adore your repaints and redesigns in general. I think a different outfit would really push this doll to the next level.

Honestly this is one of my favorite dolls you've made! Looking at her just makes me happy. Thank you for creating!

I do think this doll missed the mark. She's incredibly cute and I loved her faceup but the whole red panda thing got really lost! Such is the nature of the stock box I guess? The outfit came out a bit too clown-y for my taste, and seemed pretty rushed. Life gets in the way sometimes, and that's okay! Still an enjoyable time to watch your work though :) Looking forward to the next doll!

Definitely rushed but we can all understand why

I love the doll but I feel it doesn’t fit with the others cause they are actual animals and the mermaid but this looks more like a girl dressed as a red panda

I love the stock box series, however it seems that the dolls turn out to be more cohesive and just overall better designed when they’re pre-planned ahead. I know that the point is to challenge your artistic skills, however I just can’t help but think that they’d adhere more to the theme or idea of each doll when they’ve had more consideration. I know they aren’t expected to be as good as the bigger more complicated project dolls, but I just personally prefer those over the spur of the moment type of ideas. I kept thinking “oh no how can she save this…” each time and I feel like we all can agree that we want an artist we enjoy to do well and love their end result most importantly. My suggestion would be to continue the series but maybe limit it to like “you only get _____ amount of time to plan” or “___ concept but with a random color palette”
@minawashere85752 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying, but if she got time to plan then it wouldn't be a stock box challenge. The point of the stock box is to be a challenge, good or bad.
@jaydougan84972 жыл бұрын
i do agree that we want artists we enjoy to love their end result, but we've seen in the stock box how proud she is of many/most of her other stock box designs. this is the first time since nix that she really seemed to question if the end result is 'good' or not. every artist has some art they're not overly proud of. it's just part of making art, in any medium. having no time to plan is a challenge and means she's actively practicing her artistic improv! also, the random color palette challenge does sound like something she has done/absolutely should do, outside of the stock box lol

as an artist myself, publishing unpolished projects is healthy in moderation. not obsessing over details is healthy in moderation. im sure this doll will inspire someone regardless. people tell dollightful to take a break but what if this spur of the momment stock box was her version of taking a break without loosing steam?
@crygosphere2 жыл бұрын
i think your “improvements” are just unreasonable and ruin the spirit of stockbox. they wont all be gems. they arent all polished. they dont all have fleshed out themes. they dont have to make sense. its freedom. when you put rules to it and demand more polishing, its just as burdensome as the other dolls. let her live for once
@raccoon.pies.2 жыл бұрын
@@crygosphere they weren’t improvements, just suggestions I had to the already pre established rules. Must use dolls from the stock box, no planning ahead of time, only use materials you have on hand, etc. I’m not saying the series is bad or she should stop, I thoroughly enjoy the series and I just wanted to share some thoughts I had.

to be honest, i didnt like red at first, but they really grew on me with the whole “child like wonder” thing. they’re so cute!

I always appreciate that you include mistakes made during the process and your creative struggles or indecisiveness. Sometimes I forget that making new things can be messy and chaotic because it's something thats rarely shown, let alone worked through on camera. I've always loved your content and it continues to inspire me to create in my own way. Please don't feel forced to continue to come up with unique and intricate ideas, I would hate to see this channel become more of a chore than a hobby and lose such a wonderful creator to burnout. There's a lovely community here who understand it's ok to make stuff just for fun and we're all here to support you.

Always great to see a Stock Box video, and especially with such a cute character idea. I am admittedly not the biggest fan of the shirt, but I understand getting swept up in inspiration. But all in all Red is such a cute and well-done character!

I both love and hate this doll, I’m pretty sure it’s the shirt throwing me off because I love every other aspect of her, I think the colour pallet of the shirt mixed with the pom-poms around her neck kinda threw me off it, what the shirt looked like before you added the squares was honestly beautiful and I would probably just embroid it a bit, apart from that she’s so cute and I love her so much!
@fathermother82312 жыл бұрын
I like the way she looks honestly, she is small enough to look like a kid and her outfit sells that childlike innocents even more. She really feels like the “a kid lost in the woods and met magic” trope which I personally love.

I love the face paint and I really like the pants and scarf. I genuinely thought the pants would have a lot of room to go wrong because you can’t exactly make it lie the exact way you want due to how loose it is, but I love them! The one thing I do have to criticize is the shirt. I think because the shirt is so visually busy, it kinda distracts from the rest of the doll. I think that the scarf should be the primary focus of the outfit because it’s just so darn cute, but the top really distracts from it. I think it’s because it has so many colors that it’s just so easy to get drawn to the shirt, rather than the rest of the doll, which is beautiful. But other than that, I think it’s a wonderful doll and your work always amazes m (as per usual).
