We offered our niece and nephew a dollar for dollar match per month up to $100.00 per month if they would start any savings or investing plan. Neither one took us up on it. Please keep educating. Fantastic, I wish every young person understood this. I am trying to get my neighbor on board and by default her 13 year old son. I learned a bit about investing at 22 where I knew enough to start an aggressive 401K and that has served me well. In the last 10 years I have learnt even more about ROTH, HSAs and brokerage accounts. At 46 I have an above average net worth and I plan to continue in this vein for another decade before moving to Portugal. My husband loves his job so leaving it will be difficult so he has that timeframe to wrap his head around the concept!
@OurRichJourney2 жыл бұрын
That is so great that you began investing at 22! If your husband likes his job, you can always push for FI (without the RE) and then move to Portugal whenever your husband is ready to leave! Also, you could take a vacation to Portugal and see if that doesn’t convince him to move! 😂

Great advise. Plan to do this for my kids as they get older. There are some caveats to Custodial Accounts. There are some drawbacks, like: (1) taxes due to the minor and parent. The first $950 of unearned income is tax exempt from the minor child. The second $950 of unearned income is taxable at the child’s tax rate, which could trigger the need for you to file a separate tax return for your child. Any amounts over $1,900 are taxable at either the child’s or the adult’s tax rate, whichever is higher. Note that state income taxes are also due, where applicable. (2) the child takes over the account at ripe age of 18 or 21. (3) Impact financial aid considerations as the account are seen as assets for the student.

@aljohnson37172 жыл бұрын
@@shawn47240 nobody cares whether you’re a boomer or anything else. You build your own life from scratch. Stop blaming anybody collectively or individually. It wouldn’t get you anywhere.

@@aljohnson3717 if you want to make the point that generations don’t matter than don’t comment specific to a generation. This young lady speaks more eloquently and maturely about money and finances than most adults, my parents included (who are boomers btw). Part of the reason why she is so wise so young is because her millennial parents supported her financial socialization early, unlike what their parents, who were likely boomers, did for them. This was eluded to in the video. While we all build our own lives, it would be erroneous to say that how you are socialized doesn’t matter. Pointing this out is not complaining, it’s stating a fact.

I wish I had parents educate me like this when I was a child. They own stocks and bonds but never told us about it. When we inherited some money from a relative, my dad guilt tripped us all into giving it to him to get himself (and my mom) out of a financial bind. If he didn't do that, the 11k I inherited 16 years ago would have grown a lot since then. I'm learning as I go and I won't do the same to my child. She is 3 and already has an account with some money in it and it will be handed over to her when the time is right. When she is of age I will have her open a custodial account so she can start on her own.
