Using stock tanks is a great way to have a container garden in your back yard! They are perfect for renters or anyone that doesn’t want to dig into the ground and it is also good if you don’t want to bend as far to tend to your garden.
I will show you how easy it is to start a garden with stock tank containers!

You probably know by now but a step drill bit might be a better idea than drilling twice. I've got one and it makes drilling those bigger holes so easy.

Yay! That black material is just weed block. You can find it in a roll in the outside of the garden center. I’m so glad you’re going to get a container garden started.. you’re going to be so happy growing and eating your own vegetables🙏😊❤️

Thank you so much! Buckeye gal here too! I grew up in central Ohio with the garden, and that made me want to do another garden here in California. Although my backyard is small, I thought if I can do a container garden grow a few things it would be therapeutic and healthy for me. Hope you get to planting soon and I’m so glad that you found my channel and looking forward to your feedback on my other videos.😊🙏❤️

I tipped mine on their sides and shot the holes into them. .45 caliber makes a perfect size. If you do it from the inside, there is no raised lip around the hole to prevent water from draining. And it makes for good target practice!

Lol! That is so fun! Unfortunately I live in a city and I can’t have a fire. I’m going off in my backyard but I’ll tell you if I ever get up to my parents property and decide to do that that’s definitely an option.💕😊

I am really glad I found you on youtube. I am really enjoying your videos. If you don't mind me asking, what are the concrete blocks called that you sat the stock tank on. I am having trouble understanding what you said. I got "concrete raised bed" and I couldn't understand the rest of it..... Thanks
@TheoryofSimple
@TheoryofSimple 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Felicia, the concrete blocks that I used in my original raise bed were just concrete blocks that you buy at any home improvement center. Since I ran out of those, I used the concrete raised bed garden blocks that you used to stack in two by sixes to make a raised bed garden. These were left over from when I did this a couple years ago so it’s what I had on hand and it’s what I used. The regular concrete block will set your tanks up about seven or 8 inches higher off the ground. If you don’t have any concrete block or can’t get to them you can also just use some pressure-treated lumber perhaps six by sixes to set your tanks on. I hope this helps and please reach out if you have any other questions. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

Do you line up tanks facing south/north or east/ west for maximum production of sun loving veggies??
@TheoryofSimple
@TheoryofSimple Жыл бұрын
Depends on what you’re growing and how tall they get and how much time I need. My backyard does not get any morning sun so all of the ones toward my house are growing things like lettuce, spinach celery, carrots, cabbages those are things that don’t need as much sun the bins near the fence of my backyard get more sun starting later in the morning and I will put my veggies that need the sunnier part there. That’s also where I grow my Vining Vegetables like cucumbers squashes, so that they can fine up over a trellis and continue to reach the sun during the day, but give some shade to the ones underneath that can’t tolerate as much heat or sun. I hope that made some sense It really depends on the orientation of your house and whatever shade trees and vegetables that you’re planning and also what time of year you’re planting and where you live.. it sounds a little complicated but I live in Northern California and I can grow around and so I orient my garden a little bit differently😊❤️🙏

Beautiful! I just got two of the lower tanks for my garden. I am new to gardening and got the same potting mix . I did not add the fabric barrier :( is all my soil going to leak out the bottom now ? I drilled the holes and threw the soil in. Guess I should have watched this video first. 😫 I’m in the Bay Area and literally learning as I go.

Hi there! Thank you! I don’t think the soil will all drain out if the holes are 3/16”. If you have good sun , there are so many veggies to grow in zone 10A or 10B in the summer. Some are zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, carrots, beans and many herbs! Have fun and enjoy experimenting with your garden!

Hi! Did you have any issues with the kellogs soil in the stock tanks? The kellogs soil I bought seems to be compacting a lot and also not as well draining. Wanted to know if it is working out well for you, before I use it in my stock tanks.
@TheoryofSimple
@TheoryofSimple 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mounika, I have not had any issues with the Kellogs soil. If you haven’t planted yet you can go ahead and buy some perlite and some compost and mix it together to give more aeration to the soil. In general I make my own compost to mix it with the Kellogg’s to put into my stock tanks. I hope this helps and thank you for watching and commenting. Happy gardening!

Great video! I ought a roll of gray weed cloth from Lowe’s only to find out after I used it that it has formaldehyde. I didn’t see that it had the CA Prop 65 warning until I wanted to buy more. Why would they make a product with environmentally UNfriendly chemicals knowing that ppl will use it for weed control? This is just to warn others and not make the mistake I did. The black is most likely safe that comes in contact with the ground? I can only say I was how disappointed i was with Lowe's. Buyer beware.
@TheoryofSimple

Thank you so much and I’m so glad you brought up that topic of the chemicals and some of these lawn care products! 🙏 especially if you container gardening, you need to be careful about what is in there because it’s not going to just escape to the ground. We don’t use any round up or anything to kill any weeds in our yard and all the ones in our sidewalk. We use a propane torch to burn them out. I am so tired of all of these chemicals being sold like it’s just candy.

@@TheoryofSimple Great way to get rid of weeds. I use 1gal straight vinegar with a tsp of dish soap in a garden sprayer and saturate the roots and leaves on a hot sunny day up by our road in our gravel ditch. i add about a 1/4 cup of salt so they don't come back until the next year. We don't have sidewalks so the weeds grow easily there and I'm unable to mow. I've thought of getting a torch and probably better than the vinegar. Anyway, thank you again.
@TheoryofSimple
@TheoryofSimple 4 ай бұрын
@@adriankap2978 yeah I’ve heard some people say to put salt and vinegar on them and also when we use the torch, I will say that it did leave a little bit of a dark mark on the sidewalk however, once we power wash it, it went away. It might be really good to use the gravel because at least it won’t catch on fire and you won’t really notice the dark spots.😊
