How to paint galvanized metal so that it won't peel. You must break down the invisible outer coating on the tank, use a special primer. This video will show you how to give a copper look to your galvanized metal or personalize it to your own tastes.

Nicole, the stock tanks that I painted copper last year are full of container mix and are planted up at the moment. I think I'll need to wait until I've harvested and we get a hard freeze. Then I'll empty those tanks and power wash as much of the peeling, chipping paint off as I can, then use the power sander on them. I also have one of those stiff wire-brush attachments for my drill, that just might do the trick! I'll just have to see what, if anything, works on that hot mess. With any luck, I'll be able to start over and do it right this time. Thanks for the helpful tutorial! ~Margie

Oh I’m so sorry that they are peeling. What a pain! Yes, i think a power washer is your best bet. Try not to sand into your galvanized metal too much as they could pit. The anti-rust is the best thing about those tanks. We will send positive vibes your way that you’re able to get the paint off easy!🙏

Thank you! No, but of course it can compromise its longevity a bit if you don't keep them freshly painted if chipping occurs. What you take away in protection, you add back with the new paint. They still look brand new and the winters have been harsh lately.

Thank you for that instructional video! I love the look so much I want to try it next year. Did you drill drainage holes? Do you have crushed stone or pea gravel in the bottom for drainage? Thanks again for taking time to explain the painting process. I would never have guessed that surface prep was necessary.
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Yes, we drilled extra drainage holes on all of the tanks. No, we do not add any type of stones/gravel/plastic bottles, etc. to the bottom as that would create something called a perched water table (which you already have with the metal bottom). Adding permanent things to the bottom of your containers slows drainage. Yes, prep is necessary, if you don't want them to peel. Thank you!

Thank you! Unfortunately I can’t compare using other cleansers/vinegar as I’ve always used toilet bowl cleanser as I know it’s powerful enough to strip the coating off. The finish is still flawless after 2 years and we had a really harsh winter with 19 inches of snow in January and they’ve been battered by 3 tropical storms over the years. how do you keep ants out of planters?
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! If you have ants in your planters then you probably have an aphid problem. Ants protect aphids as they eat the sap aphids create. Look for aphids. If that is the problem spray the plants with a strong spray of water to knock off the aphids. You will have to do this regularly. Another option is to dust the plant with food grade diatomaceous earth when the plant is dry and no rain is expected. You will need to treat the soil at the base too. This will kill any soft bodied insects.

I have some vintage water troughs that are over 40 years old and are naturally patina. Would would I have to do to prepare them for painting? They are well weathered. I heard you can also use vintage. Dont luke using chemicals do to my allergies. Your thoughts?
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561 2 жыл бұрын
This will depend on what the troughs were initially finished with. Unfortunately you can't get away from chemicals as they will be in any paint and probably in the metals themselves. It may be better to leave them alone if they have a good looking patina. I wouldn't want you to get sick. I have allergies too so I know they aren't fun. You could also try a good sanding to remove any left over coating but I would definitely recommend using a good respirator if you are going to do it yourself. Thanks for stopping by! : )

Did you paint the inside at all, to prevent the zinc for leaching into your vegitable plants?
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561 Жыл бұрын
No because then the paint chemicals would leach into the soil, etc. Your plants will let you know if too much zinc is in the soil as they will not grow well. Potting soil is neutral, and plants need zinc to grow. If you plant in the ground, as we all do...you wouldn't believe what is leaching into your soil from neighboring properties from round up to lawn chemicals. There is just no way of getting around something leaching so I do best practices and leave the rest to natures natural filters.
