Stockfish has some amazing moves, but what blows my mind is the simplicity it can have. The last game, Stockfish plays simple moves. It takes the pawns and defends its pawns. It gets pinned so it moves out by attacking a piece. Simple stuff that I would see as a 900. The difference is that Stockfish understands the danger and realizes there isn’t any (I just see free pawn or attack on queen). The brilliancy is this understanding of the position to play simple chess with no bias. It doesn’t think pawns should defend pieces it just thinks to defend its material however it can.

It seems like the engines really like to restrict movements because since they can calculate lines perfectly, restricting the opponent movements just lets them calculate further. I would guess that the biggest point of ambiguity in an algorithm is how it prunes which lines to calculate, so I can definitely see how just giving the opponent less choices is better for a computer. We've seen this sort of play before when Gotham covered other chess AI matches. There's less risk that you prune the critical line if there are fewer lines to calculate.

@synergy19162 жыл бұрын
It was already done. There are already existing books that were based on the engines' recommended moves.
@sportsjefe2 жыл бұрын
You're thinking of 'book moves' as a set of moves that is understood to be best. The way 'book moves' work in the competition is that there is a group of organizers that want to lay out the starting board for the game, whether it takes 3 or 13 moves. Are there better answers midway through the move chain than the moves the organizers chose? Probably. But it's about putting the engines into difficult situations to work their way out of.

The top engines nowadays are so strong they will never lose any game against each other from starting position. They will play solid (but rather boring) lines like the berlin and QGD, and every game will be a draw. The only way to get decisive games is to force them to play weaker lines that lead to complex positions like the ones shown in the video. Leela is also an open source engine. Why isn't it making up to the finals? Can you explain?
@clausable63282 жыл бұрын
@@soumyaroy5455 Just because just just because something is open source does not mean that it is strong. There are plenty of chess engines that are open source and are around 2800 ELO

Stockfish pushing a pawn is a beautiful lock down of the position but when I do it, it's "tOo SlOw"

I love the chess engine games. Super surprised that Leela Chess Zero ended up in 3rd and outside of the final. The Leela/Stockfish games are always my favourites.
@Anytus20072 жыл бұрын
Leela was by far the best performing engine against Stockfish and did well against Komodo head-to-head. But it wasn't as efficient at holding against tough positions against some of the lower-rated engines. If you did a 3 engine final, I don't think there's any question that Leela would score substantially better than Komodo.
@eel92 жыл бұрын
currently Leela as the third place finisher is battling Komodo to prove it should have been the one to challenge Stockfish

I love how the world champ Stockfish has the Norwegian flag

Because Tord Romstad - the original developer of Glaurung (the engine that later became Stockfish) - is Norwegian.

Double backwards knight jutsu, if only I was strong enough to utilize such a technique over the board.

I can’t tell if stockfish agree with its own moves completely or it would find better moves🧐

especially an IM - doesn’t matter though cos the average viewer elo is like 1k

@@johnnyhyperborean1035 I know, and that's exactly why I want to see it. in any case, as a human being, you will never be able to understand them, so why dont just have some fun watching a weaker stockfish scoring it's own moves as mistakes?

21:34 I think bishop to h5 is not played because if the queen gets on g6 by recapturing, it can do a bunch of things. It can get on g2 and win the rook. If the white bishop goes to g4 to prevent this, the black knight can fork the king and rook on c2. Both of these scenarios leads to overall a bishop being lost for white Best move I could find for white as a response is king to f1. Then maybe black rook to g8 leads to a forced mate. Otherwise, it allows the black knight to wreck the white pawns by capturing on c2, threaten the rook and then capture on d4, winning the center, equalizing material (rook vs 2 pawns + bishop) and planting the knight in a very annoying position

The amount of people thinking alpha still better than sf15 pains me a lot

@Black Swan55 No human can beat Stockfish without handicaps (so not the one on lichess) using reasonable hardware (not running on a potato) in a tournament (multiple games)
@calialis15312 жыл бұрын
True. The historic alphazero run on an (nowadays) outdated hardware and 'zero' means 0 knowlegde and they gave it just a day (or was it a week?) to learn to play chess. It probably has no chance vs. SF15 now. BUT: give A0 an up-to-date huge cluster and a week or 2 to learn and it will kick SF again.
@-zelda-2 жыл бұрын
@@calialis1531 That is NOT TRUE and its a huge misconception that a lot of people (if not most) have about neural networks. More training won't always lead to better results because neural networks saturate. If they saturated the net in those few hours of training because they used a lot of hardware, training it for a week more, or even a month wouldn't have lead to more elo.

@@calialis1531 I'm afraid you don't know how NNUE works, it's not that simple, the gain in performance will slowly diminished overtime, so, no matter how long a0 trained, it would NEVER catch up with sf15 with superior codes
@michaeldezhniek37512 жыл бұрын
@@calialis1531 and if you think, why the stoomp even happened in the first place, well, bcs one the engines use nnue and ones not, its very simple, basically a0 just invented a gun, meanwhile sf8 still using a bow, no matter how good sf8 at archery, a0 still have the upper hands, unless, sf8 will also equipped by a gun, in this case NNUE

It would be fun to see what evaluations both engines gave themselves in any given position, to see when an engine realises it’s made a mistake
