Hi Steve , the next time you are at a Council meeting , could you ask those lovely councillors what is the budget for river dredging and drain clearing in Stockport ? Do you remember those drain cleaning vehicles that used to lift the grids up and plunge a suction pump into the drain and keep them clean up and down every street , where have they gone to ?

Good idea, but unfortunately I’m going away so I’ll miss the next two or three meetings.

Loved having a nosy round the hidden bits of Stockport. You should do the explorer tour if they still do it, at the air raid shelters.. I'm not mobile enough to go down any more but would love to watch it.. Thx for covering the floodings.. I'm hoping Stockport will get some better shops soon

If you go behind Barclays Bank in Stockport you will see the front of the old Buck and Dog pub on the left side of the wall you will see a plaque that shows how high the river level has been in the past if I remember rightly it's about 4 feet up the wall

I've got a theory too - farmers putting in land drains. Several fields I've passed by over the years that used to go underwater when it rained heavily now stay dry on the surface, but the roads passing by below the field are running like rivers. Seemed to be a lot of land drains going in in the 2000's and I think it's one reason heavy rain seems to lead to flash flooding more often than it used to. (the other obvious change is increased areas of land being built up and paved over)

It's called the bear pit coz they used to have bears performing for spectators. They were kept in a yard, backing into the air raid shelters, and when you visit the tour guide shows you where they kept the bears.. 😄

Cheers for that -I've walked past that entrance off underbank hundreds of times and never even wondered what was down there. IIRC there used to be an underground public toilet on the opposite side of the open area to the timpsons kiosk, when I realised the river was underneath I began wondering if it was a steel box dangling over the river.
@edgeofthematrix2 күн бұрын
Yes I remember those toilets from when I was younger. It makes you wonder if they were emptied into the river 🤔. Surely hope not!!!

The floodwater coming from the grid in the 70s image is from Tin Brook. There's a bottleneck at a junction below it which causes the floodwater to back up due to debris blocking the chute below it. Not convinced it's from the river as there's a massive flap at the outfall which should stop back-flow. It overflowed only a few years back with only a minor change in the river level. Suprised to see the inspection gantry has been ripped out. It was mounted well above 'normal' river level!

It is incredible that they will concrete/tarmac over large areas but don't increase the sewer system to cope with the excess run off, especially from heavy rains. As this video shows, the water does recede fairly quickly BUT our old system cannot cope with increasing population and aggressive constructions that strains the system in bad weather.

At the beginning of your video. If you had turned right and walked past Barclays Bank. Used to be a a pub at the end, forget the name. On the side of the pub is a plaque with the height of the worst flood Stockport had, if it’s still there.

Thanks Steve - very interesting flood films thank you! I'm sure there is - or certainly was - a plaque on the right hand side of Wellington Bridge (the one near 'the bearpit') marking the height of a previous flood - I can't remember which year. (I took some pictures of it years ago.) Might have answered your question about whether the recent flood was the highest? Also, are there any readings taken from the excellent river level meter thing near Brinksway Bridge? If so, again that would answer the question. Keep up the good work!

Yeah I didn’t think about the water level markers on the bridges. It’s definitely the hugest I’ve ever seen it.

Hi Y'all and EDGE OF THE MATRIX, point's taken onboard; a book WALK IN CASE BY SANDRA DAROY, Walk in case 'Some cases gobeyond', Foreword: The 'Sun', will come out at the end. Worth a read. World's history and mechanisms, money, the riddle with no final answer. Then control of the planet and the soul 'intruder's; does this sound familiar with points raised by EDGE OF THE MATRIX.
