This is happening all over the UK. Everyone is too busy "shopping like a millionaire" to care about community, jobs outside of Amazon depots and eachother. Heartbreaking to see our towns so unloved while we all sit at home on our phones. Shameful.

You're absolutely right about the main town center being desolate these days but there's a large retail park a few minutes walk away that is thriving... clearly all the money is being spent there by the council. Tunstall's not as dead as it appears from this video!

The world has moved on and this town centre is clearly being left behind. Far fewer people rely on ‘High Street’ shops these days and this place is not attractive enough to draw people in for any other reason. Garden centres are currently booming across the country, with most selling a variety of goods. Many have virtually become department stores. They tend to be really nice places to be and invariably have unlimited free parking. This town centre has some nice buildings, but also a lot of really hideous ones. I think a lot of it needs to be demolished and replaced with something attractive (more trees, gardens etc). Alternatively it needs to be reduced in size and the surplus land used for housing. It certainly needs to try a great deal harder.

Looks to me like the video was shot on a Sunday. Some of those shops were plainly still in business, just closed. I'm not saying it's a thriving town, but come on, be fair- I could walk along any high street on a Sunday and show dozens of closed shops.

@johnross2924 obviously not. And yes the town is dire but filming on Sunday just makes it it look worse. Its obvious. Look at ALL videos about poor towns. They're always filmed in the quiet times. It's obviously intentional to add to the narrative.

that is not too shabby for a modern twenty first century town built by a five hundred year old, multi billion pound empire who once owned a quarter of the entire earth's geographical surface and of whom queen victoria ruled over five hundred million people!everybody keeps calling it a flaming rathole and a disgrace but look at what's happened down our way.s few beavers have built a dam on the water,by the river and on that wasteland ,next door to our local police station, sewer rats have built a rat's nest.it's full of twigs, old discarded teabags, grass, leaves and soil.it looks absolutely blooming horrible and that's not that much better than tunstall.people keep complaining about tunstall, hanley and stoke on trent but if i had a few thousand put away,i would send my son to tunstall to live ,work and get an education.you want the best for your kids don't you?i want him to have a future.i don't want him to leave school to lifelong unemployment and poverty like i did, forty years ago!i want to walk into a macdonalds in tunstall and see my lad mopping the floor and then going back home to his own one room bedsit every night!i don't want wandsworth or strangeways for my lad.i want him to go to harvard and do his degree and qualify as a janitor, just like my great grandad did in the 1950s.he's been upto blackpool to see the lights, seven times.i'd move to tunstall tomorrow if i could afford to move out of rotherham but they've cut my benefits to mozambique rates.i'm only on the equivalent of one us dollar a day!now i'm stuck here forever!and i could have been in tunstall!playing shove 'apenny and sipping twenty million!on a beach in tahiti, with beautiful bikini clad beauties!
