About 8 years ago, I did an experiment where I only ate mre's. My goal was to go for thirty days on just two mre's a day and drink only water. I breezed through the first week about midway through the second week it became more difficult not to eat a regular meal, and on the third week it was impossible not to have real food on my mind constantly every waking hour and it was becoming more difficult to stay focused and concentrate on simple tasks at hand. It was on about day 28 or 29 I through in the towel and ended the experiment. Strangely enough, in the end, what I seem to be craving the most was bread. Until that time, flour and wheat storage for prep'n and survival had been a low priority on my list. That has since changed.

The folding saw and a pair of pruning shears are always in my hunting backpack and my turkey hunting vest for building blinds and clearing shooting lanes. Also in case you have to cut a stick for an emergency game of fetch.

Just one small observation. The Silky saws are designed as pull-cut saws, it appears to me that you are putting similar force on the push and pull stroke. If you focus 80% effort on the pull stroke you greatly reduce the risk of the blade buckling, allowing you to utilise the full length of the blade, even for the shorter saws.

Riggs is the most essential piece of your kit!😊 I recall a large overhead sign the welcomed you to the training area at fort Carson back in the day; “Take Two Salt Tablets and Drive on”….those words have always stuck with me. Enjoyed this…

Stoker and Riggs still doing it right - 'deeds not words'! Overlooked much of the time but a saw is much quieter than an axe - when that matters. At 63 if I down a can of Dinty Moore I don't leave the house without an E-tool (and some paper) in my bag or truck! Cheers for the tears Stoker - Semper Fi

Good video, Top. I once watched a soldier use the edge of his e-tool as as saw to cut firewood. He did it, but decided it worked better as an axe.

The biggest advantage of a folding saw like a Silky is not that it can cut wood for shelter or fire, but that it can do so MUCH more quickly and with VASTLY less effort than would any other sort of cutting impliment.

Something else about folding saws, they are typically quieter to use and safer to use vs an axe or hatchet.

I do love the Paracord, but I also know how to cut wood to fit together like a puzzle incase I don't have the paracord to tie it. I don't buy it as much now. But I do still use it once in a while, like for a close line to hang clothes or to hang other item, using carabiners, etc. I even used a bit in the house too, not just for "the great outdoors".

I always carry a folding saw when I get out in the field, and have strongly encouraged my SAR teammates to do so as well. Late spring though early fall I just use a $20 Fiskars ten inch saw, which works great for clearing branches or cutting small firewood. The last couple of years I have taken to carrying a Silky Katanaboy 500 when it's cold and snowy. The Katanaboy is bulky and a bit heavy, but it makes shelter building and large fires in deep snow so much easier. It's also nice to have in the vehicle in case a storm knocks any trees down across the road.

I too carry a small one, it is called a Sharkey, got it in Korea many years ago. Not sure where it was made. The blade is designed to cut in the pull direction, it cuts plenty fast.

Hey brother, great video! However I wanted to comment on your land nav, map reading videos…I’m retired Army, use to teach a lot of it…over my career…mostly at Bragg… I use your videos as a great refresher before I go out roaming around in the woods… In these days where everything is GPS, the map reading and land nav skills have fallen by the way side (guilty) but I keep in practice so if needed I have them. Take care! Ed

Not just good things for survival, good things to make the day out in nature go better. Was out today and picked out a nice branch I need to modify a light weight trowel I use for hiking, used a folding saw, then I made coffee, used a titanium mug but I have canteen cups. The saw that I use is one that I bought out of the lawn and garden Department of a big box store. I think this saw cost me $11. I have used it for years and it is still going strong. I just can't see paying so much for a saw and then turn around and have to pay $30- $40 for a replacement blade. Yeah you do get what you pay for. I guess I got lucky. But Fiskars is known for making good products. I went with Fiskars and I've never regretted it. It's when I found that the first one was good I went back and bought a second one

I personally like more solid sapper shovels (stainless steel mostly), like the ones that the soviets used, but that's only on me due to the fact that all the folding saws that I've bought have broken in less than ten uses. Plus, it's a hatchet, melee weapon and cooking surface (scrubbing off all the dirt, of course).

I was trained to leave no man behind and got pissed off when we were in the middle of July with full chemical suits and full rucksacks on with mask being pushed across the landscape by a captain who was only wearing fatigues and said, leave him and move out and the guy was his RTO. I refused the order and was told he would deal with me back at Garrison and just left us there and told the other chicken ass soldiers to move out. We returned to Garrison, and I went straight to Battlion HQ, reported it, and the next day, the XO was in command
