Spartan Brigade Paratrooper here. After 3 years in an Arctic Airborne BCT I can attest that what you are wearing is fine if you are casually walking and carrying only yourself. Add even a minimal amount of exertion or weight and you're going to be soaked with sweat in your current attire. Which can be dangerous at certain temperatures. Our winter uniform was a beanie, gloves, ECWCS Gen III Silkies, Softshell level V top & bottom, and winter variants of our boots. The silkies and the softshell are likely the same thickness. Very thin. We only added another layer if we were static. A rule of thumb was "light, loose, layers." This is how you should dress if exerting yourself in extreme cold temperatures. You always shoot for comfortably cool, not warm and moisture is not your friend. Two common mistakes new soldiers make is wearing too many layers and not hydrating. Anytime we made significant movements, we had a mandatory stop at the 15 minute mark to inspect and remove any unnecessary snivel. That 15 minutes under load was to let them learn what happens when you wear too much. The inspection and removal was to keep them safe. Additionally, you don't get the same ques to hydrate in a cold weather environment like you do in warmer climates. However, maintaining your core temperature requires a lot of energy and it can be dangerous if you fall behind on your intakes. Of course the cold weather I am seeing in your video is not extreme, but I thought I would share with the community. You have the stage here, pass it on brother.

Just love the camera work. At five minutes and I felt like you grab me by my left ear and then the back of my neck pointing out that the Pacific Northwest gets a lot of rain over 100 inches and that the Douglas fir is a good source of fuel for a fire. Good review of the cold weather kit. I have this tent but the rain fly on mine is solid coyote. I switch out the inner using improve combat Shelter tent body. I believe you could also use the Marines tent combat one person for Fourseason use.

The goal for core body temp for cold weather is Comfortably cool. 15 degrees F, is a marker temp for when cold becomes dry. Snow brushes off clothing and cotton canvas rather than creating wet spot soaking in. Military muckluck boots are canvas, terrible in 15f+ as they soak wet, below 15f, they dry(er). Always save room in pack for stowing shedded layers, so that layers are not riding outside exposed to snow. I dont wear base layer in daytime, so they nice n dry for sleeptime. In times of activity, I wear cotton tshirt shirt intended to soak sweat and change out later for dry shirt, sweat gonna happen so extra shirt allows to work around the inevitable. The temps in the tent were from external source, solar, and not from anything generated from inside tent, like human source which is the real temp source to test the tent. Thanks for taking the time and energy to produce these videos.

In the winter we typically summit the high peaks in the North East in a mid weight base layer and a hard shell. You don't have to stop long to feel the freeze but keep moving and the body is amazing at pumping out heat. We do differ on sleeping bag philosophy. I use my 20 degree bag in winter. I just wear my puffy jacket (which I carry anyway in the winter) and I add a pair of puffy pants. Added benefit of the down jacket and pants is being warm around camp. Used this system down to -15F with no issues. I have been too warm on occasion and adjusted. For example, maybe take off my puffy jacket and just use it as a blanket. My down jacket is named a sweater; just said to let you know it's not a parka. Thanks for the video. I haven't seen temp readings in a review before.

Here in Minnesota, there is a saying: When it gets cold, you can always add another layer, but in hot temperatures, you can only take off some many layers before you go to jail. Was issued the ninja suit just before leaving for Iraq. That technology was new then, at least to me, and wasn't explained very well about how it keeps you warm. That layer really does nothing for warmth, but it wicks perspiration away from your skin, so you don't cool as fast. Since then I've learned that adding a mid-layer of fleece, wool, or some performance synthetics / blends is key. Upgrading your cotton midlayer to one of those will be valuable. Keep that mid layer dry with a outer layer to protect against rain, snow, wind. And you're in the money- managing your temperature by adjusting vents and zippers as your strenuous or still activity and weather changes is key. On my last FTX just before retired from the USAR, it was spring but still snowy and temps in the teens to low 30's. Platoon was instructed to bring all of their sniffle gear. They didn't listen, and PCC's didn't happen due to early morning movement. We just expected Soldiers to show up early and fully prepared. (Young men are adults, and expect them to be mature and follow the guidance). First night at camp, setup the platoon tent and discovered the immigrants that entered under the MAVNI program, not accustomed to this climate, also were the ones with minimal cold weather gear. Soldiers and Leaders both learned some lessons (goes without saying). Lastly, yes, downgrade to skivvies in the fart sack, but keep your next day's uniform and clothing down by your feet. Its just unnecessary and awkward to observe Soldiers get dressed into cold layers. They take longer, complain, and have to use up more calories to stabilize temperatures. After I retired, I learned that the Army now has the Arctic training course. Had I known that when I was in, that would have been a school I would have requested. Keep 'em rolling!

Glad to see fellow PNWers taking advantage of the recent snow for some cold weather gear testing/training. I've got the Litfighter1 as well (no winter kit yet) but when I went out in -6f I was still fine with my sleep system and the tent. Typically its just boxer briefs and socks, maybe the ninja suit if i know ill have to get up and pee part way through the night. Snow even gave some extra padding lol. Couldn't agree more on the layering too. Took my doc out with me on a snow ruck yesterday. Layering light and right kept me plenty warm on the move without sweating much, had extra layers in the pack for when we stopped if I needed them.

When I was out in Kosovo, at gate 1, on the Serbian border, we had a plywood building with minimal heat that would often go out. I remember it being really cold and 2 to 3 feet of snow. Used all layers of sleeping bag and silks. Was fine. Even with Temps dropping to 0 or there about. But that food you made, mmmm made me hungry, looked great. If I was to get the extra layer for the tent I would have to buy it. You should do an overnight in it and let us know what you really think about how well it works. 🇺🇸

You wanted to hear cold weather stories, ok. Well while I was serving in NI on the border we did an over watch. And during that time it was winter and very cold, in so much we were in a dug out on stag (watch) and observing the road with our feet shin deep in water freezing around us. A guy called deadly Trev, (for fun as he couldn't hurt a fly) was with me and we got it bad. The weather really closed in and the water around our feet froze. Eventually we were relieved after 2 hrs. We got back to the trench in a wood line, had a brew and got in our sleeping bags. 30 mins later I could still hear Trev suffering from the cold so I had to grab him and put him in with me, hugging him. He was freezing cold and clearly suffering from hypothermia so I had to do something to help. It worked and Trev could fight another day, god bless him. Just a UK military perspective so not quite as bad as the minus weather you get in the mountains there.

I suspect I'm about to find out the hard way this weekend just how warm this tent will be. I tried it out last week in my backyard which is about 4300 ft elevation. Weather report was saying a low of 18 degrees, so i figured it would be a great time to try it out. I had set it up earlier in the day. When I went to bed, using my kestral, i measured about i dunno, 35-38ish degrees. Don't know what ambient was, but I was breathing fog. When I woke up at 4am, I measured 31 degree in the tent, then stuck my hand out and measured 24 in the vestibule. Colder outside the vestibule? Dunno. This weekend, i'm expecting a low of 9 and a high of 24. Probably time to break out the polypropylene.

I have the Litefighter-1. I got this tent to significantly test in mild to wild conditions for outfitting my Alaska remote destination, multi-day river rafting trips. The tents I use guiding and outfitting are very high-end, well proven, well-thought out 4-season expedition tents. Tent selections like Mountain Hardwear Trango series as well as larger US & Canadian Military-based Overland Expedition, Bombshelter, SEP, and Arctic Oven. When C-19 hit... multi person tents alone for outfitting was not the direction to take. Single occupants in 2,3,4, 6 and up tents was not suitable and loadout on the overweight side of tings. SOLO yet reliable, weathertight, simple to set-up/take-down, accommodating, and featured enough tents had to become part of the equation I picked the Litefighter-1 in my top 5 for a the reasonably suitable, dependable, simple, lightweight, affordable, available, 3+ season tent test. I also liked MADE IN USA. Overall... a pretty good product. Definitely, has compromises and issues... however, in most cases mitigating workarounds. It struggles the most in shoulder seasons of early Spring and late Fall in boarder line rain/freeze/thaw conditions. Condensation on fly is a big issue just as it is on single wall tents. If pushed into 4th season... the fly does not go down and vestibules are exposed to spindrift. It is not really a 4-season because of all the mesh and lacking fly coverage in wind driven snows. No doubt the kit is very helpful, but it would need to velcro to a continuous perimeter line running around the top of tub and below mesh (where the little strips of velcro are presently for ID patches. Long winded --- Yet hoping this really helps some folks (and company out). Offering this insight provides real-world perspectives from putting this tent thru paces: Fall of 2020 to 2022 multi-season/multi-environment. Couple things to watch out for: A.) Plastic Hubs are prone to small multiple cracks!!! Thermoplastic could be a much better selection. I see some are now Aluminum. My Aluminum poles are DEC vs. Easton. It has not gotten to failing points, nevertheless stay attentive. Grommets over doorways are poorly thought out and lack reinforced stitching. Place a couple Guinness-beer nitro widget 'balls' in repair kit. Drill/awl a small/tightly fitting hole as pole endcaps. If/when grommets fail... place on pole ends, and you'll not spear-punch a hole in tent. Lengthen out all stake-able perimeter loops by tying of 1.5' - 2' cordage loops. Address stake count... consider more and better stakes. Modify head and foot ends that may have no small factory sewn-in tie-outs... maybe some do. If getting inner cover... consider a seamstress sewing in velcro securing all the way around just below mesh line.

I'm sure you could make a skirt to block out drafts fairly easily if you wanted to. Alternatively, you could pile up snow or dirt around the base to block the wind.
@alaskaraftconnection-alask33972 жыл бұрын
@@phillipnunya6793 If you are talking sewing in extended skirting... that would make for a major Do-It-Yourself alteration. In practical terms... you would need the suitable sewing equipment, materials, have good layout, and seamstress skillset. It is likely not a cost effective venture. Condensation would still be a major issue without accessory inner cover. The inner cover still is not in any way adhering to the tub. Snow piling is not often the remedy, assessible, or steadfast... same goes for rocks, dirt, sand, wood, and debris. It's sometimes not all that easy and can be time consuming.
@alaskaraftconnection-alask33972 жыл бұрын
Since my last long-winded attention to detail and suggested mods sort of commentary... here are some updates. A.) I found a set of new ballistic-fiber, carbon, and resin matrix poles. Same plastic hub, however probably the more suitable for these tent poles vs. metal. Quite nice, seam sturdy/resilient, warm to the touch, and I'm wagering less condensation. B.) Urethane sealing on all outer seam work of the tent fly as well as the bathtub floor. C.) Also worthy of mention minor repair to a few pin-holes thru floor and re-gluing/re-taping one of the awning grommets. D.) Better stake kit: 7001 ALUMINUM 10"/25cm Cyclone Spiral Stakes. I outfitted this as a rental tent for two groups this season. One mid Summer and one early Fall. The Summer trip had no issues, reliable, easy set-up, and stayed completely dry. The Fall trip was a successful Bison Float Hunt by cataraft that will be featured on Randy Newberg's channel. The hunter wanted a solo tent. Weather was forecasted to be extended saturating wet multiday. I promised he'd stay dry. Hunt went awesome. Hunter stayed dry. In retrospect, said he would have liked more space - lol. That is the one thing about small solo tents... makes it harder to get in and out of clothing, boots on/off etc. in confined spaces.

Americans just can't change, even if something is simpler and they use it every day and not know it. Water boils at 100 and freezes at 0. There is only 3 countries in the world that still stick to the accident imperial system, America, Myanmar, and Liberia (the later 2 are switching to metric). Hehehe hang in there stoker, it might make a comeback.
