Bait cars for sure. Thieves got my Element couple days ago in the Twin Cities Minnesota. I live in an apartment building, so Element sits unprotected in a parking lot. I certainly can't afford to fix this problem and have them steal the cat converter and both sensors again. I need to find someone willing to put in a protective shield and parts you've just shown.

I got mine stolen a year ago, now I have 3inch bricks in my driveway that I park the car over, there is also some wood with nails poking out, they won't reach it with their jack and if they try they will have their skin shredded. Apparently they had a couple of girls distracting employees by asking about applications for work. An extra financial burden I am not prepared for. Those 'extra' pipes you welded in are okay, but you should put a wire inside them that causes a loud siren to go off when the saw cuts the wire. Aim the siren down towards the cat, so they have to leave the area or go deaf. Good point about the aftermarket cats... some people might want to pre-emptively switch their cat out to an aftermarket cat, and keep the original safe inside their home (since thieves don't really want the aftermarket cats).

Just happened to me and had no idea it was a standout. Parked on the street side of a family members apt in Pleasanton. 15 cars parked in a row next to mine and of all of them picked mine. A vigilant neighbor heard a noise in the early AM and called the cops. They still got it and took off unfortunately and at large. I live in Oregon and I come here and and of corse this happens. Yep, got mine 3 weeks ago in Orange, California. Still waiting on the parts to arrive for the repair (back ordered so clearly these are in high demand right now.) Sigh. My wife arrived home in her roaring Element .... minus the cat. I just ordered a replacement CARB-compliant one from RockAuto. I would be interested in some sort of anti-theft arrangement. She does not feel safe to park her car anywhere anymore. I do have a MIG welder, and an assortment of 1/8" steel items. Mostly angle irons, and 1-inch straps. Hopefully, I can figure something out.

Mine I got stolen the other day these crackheads stole my cat and both O2 sensors plus messed up one of my plugs that connect into the O2 sensor all it shows is the wires. Cameras didn’t even catch these crackheads like they are ghost’s. I’m soooo pissed off this was my only way to go to work and imagine driving to work an hour away sounding like 3 Harley’s in sync. Now when I take the train and 2 buses it takes me 2-3 hours to arrive at work and go back home. I really need your opinion what will be the best replacement cause I really need to get my car back on the road. I went to Honda parts now and it will cost just for the cat alone $1900 I always use original Honda parts but this time I can’t afford this so I will have to deal with aftermarket part to get by and still pass NY inspection. A buddy just had his 2005 element chopped last night by some trash. Can you guys tell me as a temp fix, if the downstream o2 sensor is not connected, will it put the element into limp mode? The trash that ripped off his converter hacked up the front o2, but left the port. The rear sensor wiring and front sensor wiring got completely butchered and I am so upset for my buddy. Also, what sort of protection do you guys recommend for the 2015 Ford Superduty gas 6.2 cats??

Mine was stolen last May 2019 , I brought it to a shop and put a new catalytic converter paid 700.00 dollars . I pass the smog test and renew my registration on that year . But now 2021, I need to renew again but this time I failed the smog it say upstream O2 sensor modified . Should I have to replaced the entire catalyctic converter or just fix the sensor . Come to find out I got very very lucky. When my mechanic finally got under it two days later that was as soon as I could get it to him he looks under there and he comes back out and he points at me and he says you are one lucky lady two more minutes and they would have had it! He welded it back together in 10 minutes no charge. Funny thing is I had been at a Christian concert at Tom McCall's Park in Portland let us worship. I was looking forward to this concert for a good year. Finally it came nothing was going to stop me from going when I got to the concert I begin to worship and sing with them but something inside my stomach wasn't right and something told me to leave and I was like what I don't want to leave I just got here but something in my gut told me to go now I know it was God. He covers everything. He did speak to me he told me to go because he knew that they were trying to get my Cadillac converter they probably had someone watching and seen me coming back from my truck in the parking lot that I paid for to park. Thank you God I didn't have $2,000. It's all nice and quiet and beautiful now I didn't have to pay a penny that's how God works when you're doing things right and I've been doing things right working real hard keeping my eyes on him. He just let me know that I do hear him and I did obey him and he had the whole thing covered nobody got my Cadillac converter and nobody's going to get it. I'm sorry for anybody who has lost theirs. And I just think that you should always put an estimate of cost else why I have this site I'm sorry to say but you don't want to have a half ass site you got good information on the video just spiff it up a little bit and tell some cost I think that would be very smart anyhow have a great day

So, this is great, and all of these sorts of CC protections are good. BUT what about getting the cc off when the owner brings it to the shop for cc issues? Do these protective devices cause big issues for the mechanics who are legitimately trying to fix cars?

That’s a great question. This is a matter of balance. What I mean is how likely is it that your cat can get stolen versus how likely your car will need a service that requires more effort for the technician to do with the theft deterrent pieces in place. At this time the products we offer rarely come into play under normal vehicle maintenance and we see a ton of cat theft.

I don’t know the rules in Utah, but I suspect the catalytic converters are not regulated there, if I’m correct any universal cat will suffice. I would research for a few good muffler shops and call them to get a feel for their service.

I paid the deductible - but I believe the final cost of replacement was around $1000 and that didn't include the tow. Good luck! I know it sucks to have that happen.

The aftermarket part has both rhodium and palladium in it, the reason they aren’t stolen as frequently is the recycle value is lower. The infrastructure for recyclers is non existent for aftermarket parts.

If the upstream oxygen sensor is welded on very close to the cat like almost on it, what are the effects of this? I got an aftermarket cat welded on since mine got stolen but I noticed this video shows the upstream being installed a lot farther from the cat than the shop that did mine.

@@stunter2875 I went to a regular exauhst shop not the dealer. I would suggest buying a cheaper after market one not one the dealer would put on. They would charge around 2 or 3k when you can get an after market one that works just fine for under 1k. Plus the after market ones are less desirable to steal.

I get this a lot, unfortunately I’m not familiar with other regions and whom to recommend. My advice is to use Yelp and Google to find exhaust shops in your area with a lot of good reviews.

There are recycling places all over the world. We believe this is organized crime and if we’re right it’s likely the parts are going out of the country in containers.

Why dont recycling facilities crack down on cat converter recycling?

In 2009 California reared Bill #627 that limited what recyclers can do as far as payment and how. You can regulate the states all you want, but if these are leaving the country it will have no affect.

What is the average cost of this repair. I live in Sac and mine was just stolen. The very same way as the Element on the lift. But I still have the upper o2 sensor and the plug for the second wasn't damaged. This happen in front of my house and took less then a minute.

Here in Phoenix the average repair is between 3K and 4K for original parts.

@@rocketrose2165 Honda OEM California legal catalytic converter is $2900. Each Oxygen sensor is $331. These prices are current as of 05/26/2023 in Henderson NV. I curse the thieves that stole my cat!

I like it, but it's not a DIY solution for me, since I'm not a welder. I also wonder if they just can't unbolt the clamps and remove the cat...probably would take too long. I guess they are just looking for one they can cut out in 20 secs, which is not this. I think this is good deterrent...I think all solutions I looked at are deterrents and none totally prevent theft.
