When I was a brand new private straight outta basic, i got off the plane at Sea-Tac on the way to JBLM and there was a guy who tried to call me out for "stolen valor" because I didnt have my unit patch on (which he should have known why since I had yet to actually get to reception/in processing at my unit) and all I did was pull out my CAC and show it to him. Ge then changed his whole demeanor and just started giving me some solid advice about starting out at my first unit. Went from a very awkward encounter, to an awesome convo that I'll never forget even today.

I completely understand that being in the military is a truly honorable thing to do, and quite a few of us couldn’t get in due to medical reasons and whatnot, but to try to take away from that honor by lying and being a phony is so wrong. I’ll never understand a full fledge adult playing dress up. My older brother is in the Military and it infuriates me that people fake it, knowing what all he has gone though on his deployments. I asked him if he had family members who served in each branch and he proceeded to tell me that he has personally served full terms in every branch of the military and was honorably discharged from each one. Am I weird for not saying, "Thank you for your service" to veterans and active military people I meet? Maybe it's because my grandpa served in WWII, and my dad in Vietnam, so if someone says they served, that's par for the course to me. It may also be because it sounds disingenuous, a platitude of sorts. I'd rather thank you for your service by buying you a beer or some ammo, y'know? 'Course with fakers around, probably best not to so freely give stuff, even thanks. I'm a RSO at my local range, and we let military and police shoot for free, but they gotta present ID, be it their CAC, VA card, badge, whatever. Gotta be photo ID. I mean, it only saves them the $10 range fee, but we're strict about it as the range is 100% volunteer run and non-profit, so someone cheating us out of $10 hurts more than it normally would. I definitely have great respect for anyone who served in the armed forces, especially those who saw combat like my dad. My grandpa was the quartermaster for the US in Cairo, Egypt during WWII, and never saw combat, but support roles are just as important as those on the front lines. Can't fight if you don't have food, ammo, cleaning kits, fuel, replacement clothes, etc. My dad coordinated and directed artillery in Vietnam. While he was a tech sergeant (rank no longer in use by the army, now called sergeant first class) and primarily worked in the command center where they did calculations for firing solutions (most were unarmed in there, btw), he did have other duties that were rotational, such as guard duty. He obviously was in the shit, because you don't get the Bronze Star for courage by directing artillery. Apparently on one of his guard duty rotations, his post was overrun during an enemy offense, but he held his ground despite having the means and opportunity to break contact, refusing to abandon his post while he had injured allies in the foxhole with him. It doesn't shame me to admit there are men like my dad, far more badass than I. I'm glad such people exist, and if you're one of them, you don't have my thanks, you have my deepest respect.

Didn’t wear anything on our caps. Wore MajCom insignia on the beret. Wore rank both sleeves, didn’t wear the flag anywhere. Only thing worn not sewn on BDUs was a LEG medal if you’d won one, but not if deployed. I did spend time in a unit where we wore no rank or anything on our BDUs. That was funny because I ended up with a TDY to Lackland, stayed in the VOQ right near a basic training area. Walking across town a parade ground on our way to get a meal, got accosted by a DI of considerably lower rank. When he first yelled at us I didn’t know who he was yelling at. Then we saw him running toward us and figured it out. He had the idea we were trainees until he got close. I enjoyed chewing out a drill instructor. Not everyone with a blank uniform is a basic trainee. A few of us were experienced noncoms in black budget units. Then there was that lieutenant at Ft Benning who didn’t know what to make of an Air Force NCO who didn’t salute officers. I was attending the 11B NCO combat arms school before an unidentified deployment in 1980. Sometimes I wear a denim jacket with a Security Police Senior badge, a camouflage SAC patch (SAC sucks so freedom’s winds can blow - Peace is our profession, war is just a hobby), and my cute little Vietnam War Veteran pin. And don’t thank me for my service, I remember getting spit at for being in service, nothing ticks me off more than a civilian of my age that thanks me for my service.

I think it’s marketed to a lot of military or former so the guy probably asked him if he served. Just be honest, “ I like the shirt”. Hell I like when people bug me, I get to thank them for their service and I appreciate the attention to detail.
