In this video, we are going follow Liz our winter mountain guide on the mountain and learn about avalanche safety and four key areas where if you follow them you can reduce the amount of risk you take when freeriding. No matter what you do you will take some risk when you are going freeriding so it is important to learn as much as possible and try to use all the information you have to make choices. Please consider taking an avalanche safety course to better your knowledge!

Great video! "If your tummy says no, don't go" Very sad that your "how to drop on skis" vid has 445K views, "How to ski powder" has 157K views and this one has 78K. Especially when you recommend it right in the video. We're up to 12 deaths this year in Canada, avalanche safety is no joke.

I normally carry all that stuff but I’ve always some energy bars in my pockets and a little fixed blade knife (the Schrade SCHF15 for the ones who want to know) because you never know when you’ll need to cut something like bag straps or whatever in case of emergency.

Could you elaborate on why the risk is more on different aspects of the mountain. I know wind affecting cornices but I thought north facing slopes were safer than south facing because the sun does not affect it so much therefore more stable. Is this wrong?
@hdubbs9174
@hdubbs9174 6 жыл бұрын
After new snowfall, south facing slopes get more sun causing the new layers to consolidate faster--thereby becoming more stable than north facing slopes. Snow is complicated and there are many variables (wind, sun, temperature, direction...) that affect snow pack stability. Don't just watch videos like these, *take a course before venturing off into backcountry*. She got the "north facing slopes are dangerous" from the bulletin, which in Austria is updated daily, depending on weather conditions, altitude, and snow tests. This isn't a general rule, it was just taken from the report. Your avi courses should teach you how to read and interpret the bulletin in order to minimize risk.

Are avalanche backpacks reusable?
@StompItTutorials
@StompItTutorials 6 жыл бұрын
Some are but most you need to change a small "gas tank" on after every time you use it. The one I am using in the how to ski powder can be used 2 times on one charge since it´s electric.

the avalanche bulletin in my area doesnt tell you shit, it just shows the avalanche threat from a scale 1-4
@nater567
@nater567 4 жыл бұрын
The bulletin in most places is pretty simple, and based on pretty simple information. Check the weather every day and compare that with how it will affect avalanche danger. Add all the layers and make your own bulletin over the course of the season.

I dont like the fact that you recommend an Airbag. This give you a false feeling of safety, and many people take bigger risks. I Know many professionell certifyed mountain guides and not one of them uses an Airbag. this Video does not nearly Show the real danger of avalanches, and gives the feeling that it is easy for everybody to leave the slope and go to the open Terrain, but this in dangerous and needs lot of skills that nobody can learn by watching KZbin Videos.
