Hip mobility was one 1st things worked on coming back to skiing, landings landings , you may find the deep squat. Knees over toe too

I had been using CARV for a couple of years. The edge angel is always my weakest point. If Iangulate too much I got stiff. Or, I got low edge angel. Thanks for the video. Will try your tip when I get back to the snow.

Thank you. No on short turns you want to keep the hip more down the hill and the legs turn in the hip socket. The hip will still turn a bit left and right.

Just in time I was carving packed powder moguls yesterday and was thinking the up-down flow is harder here. Of course I need to improve! But it's a lot more fun, I feel in much more control, by staying on edge.

Would you reccomend looking towards the direction of the inside ski in order to help get the hip leaning towards the inside ski ?

I really appreciate you letting us see your mistakes, Jens. Can you explain the mechanical purpose to shifting your weight back to the heels at the end of the turn rather than holding the middle till the end? It seems counterproductive because you have to go even farther to shift your weight forward at the beginning of the next turn. Thanks.

you don't move a TON backwards, and it's to retain edge hold with the tails which you can really feel bite at the end of a turn.

​@@Yepowfulthanks. But it seems like you would lose edge grip at the tips when you shift weight back...unless that's the point. I would think that you would want to maintain a centered stance (not back) at the end of the turn so as to maximize fore/aft edge grip until the moment you release the edges to start the next turn.

Focus on how I tried to correct myself that you SHOULD NOT try too lean back at the end. But use a bit of cross-under that movement will put the skis rather far infront of your body thus hip is back. Doing the cross under helps have a smooth transition and quickly go into the next turn.

Thank you. I have Carv and love it. Could you make a video on how to go slower and still have proper form. I can have quite good form 135 ski IQ but only when I am going fast (50-60 mph and I am a thin person so it’s quite fast for my size) When I slow it down my form goes down the gutter. Thank you!

Just don't wax your skies, or ski on less steep slopes 😂... Honestly, it's hard to say if you don't identify what exactly starts to go wrong with your form.

The thing is when carving you want to try to use the knees instead of the hip, thats what professional skiers do and its more stable

@@MrGbot2000 okay fair enough, but making the entre turn by turing your hip is not a good way to engage it, ising your hip like he is demonstrating is a good way for beginners to carve but it automatically puts Pressure on your inner ski which leads to falling

The turn starts at the feet, but eventually the hip needs to come down, the knees can’t do it all.

Is there any drills or techniques you’d recommend for an intermediate-advanced skier on a short ski slope (either real snow, or a dry slope)? I tend to get bored within 30 minutes in sessions in the UK when warming up before a ski holiday. Could make for a good video!

Thanks for the video, can you help to explain how one keeps so much pressure on the outside ski when it looks like you’re leaning away from it. I know you’re still trying to keep as much of your upper body over the outside ski but it’s so deceiving when I see skiers in this position - in fact it was the reason I developed a really bad habit of leaning away from the outside ski and trying to force it on its edge without any base built

think about pulling your inside leg up towards your hips, it increases pressure towards the outside ski and can help increase edge angles.

Shin pressure is the answer, is it not, to help with body positioning? If your shins are touching the boot your centre of gravity is in the right place, easing on and off as you progress through the carve? Maybe I am terribly wrong?

Can someone explain where your weight should be distributed on your outside leg when trying to start a turn ? Should most of the pressure be on the toe ?

Top 1/3: frontside heavy, middle 1/3: neutral, lower 1/3: backside heavy. Notice I didn't say backseat. Your body has to have the same stiff tension throughout. Cue words of toes to nose and heels to back of head … to quote Tom Gellie (Big Picture Skiing)

I’ll tell you what I found that the experts are actually doing. At the top of the turn, they flex the outside ankle and in so doing, direct pressure forward to engage the front of the ski.

@@mikefa2442 Honestly, I wouldn't worry about what I said above. At this stage, you just need to maintain a strong skier athletic stance with "tension" in your ankles, knees, hips, back with feet behind your hips (some people interpret it as pressing on the tongue of the boot). And of course, you need to begin to get on the edge as you enter the top of a turn (otherwise you would go straight). I think what will help you is the concept of the "float", when your skis are both flat (going straight during transition), your body has to be perfectly perpendicular to the slope, no matter how steep (it is a very unnatural and scary feeling because you're just about to start "toppling" down the hill). One cue to achieve this is to make sure your legs are symmetric (have the same bent angle and length) during that phase. Then as you enter the turn (toppling), start tipping to get on edge. The float stage can be long or super super short, but it's always there. If you understand and can do what I said, it'll transform your skiing. Hope that helps. P.S. you know sometimes you find yourself stuck on a steep slope (down hill leg long, up hill leg short) and can't seem to find a way to force your skis onto the opposite edge. That's when this float concept comes in. You need to be perpendicular to the slope (scary I know since you'll gain speed fast) by making your legs the same length and THEN get on the opposite edges. The sooner you understand this concept, the sooner you'll advance. P.P.S. Float with symmetric legs came from Harold Harb's second book (but I think his third book Essentials of Skiing and DVD's are probably the best for beginners) and being perpendicular to the slope came from Tom Gellie. As you can see, different people approach skiing differently. One is more about body cues/feel and one is more about biomechanics/theories. It's amazing how much more you learn when you study off the slope, like I didnt realize the importance of the float until I learned from Tom Gellie's material and went back to Harb's DVD's to realize that it's been there all along, just that I thought it was "too basic" to emphasize it.

Thank you.. very inspiring.. yeees... forward momentum.. and down.. just like.. making love haaaa...hip conected to toes.. big toe... like playing pedals on a piano i would say.. not overdoing the turn.. skis mandate .. the parabolic skis do the turn.. not interfering is the thing.. hip to the inside of the turn.. like exterior ski.. hip peda ling... yes.. thank you.. pressing down on the outside ski.. up on the inside.. exterior arm helps the movement.. vital to be really fit.. well slept.. and maintain edges very sharp every skiing day... they are never too sharpened.. im old style.. wedeln.. bumps style.. it take a lot to change style.. i love skiiding haaaa.. very explosive and forward driven skidding.. use in many turns in hard courses in competition.. please do a video on good skiiding.. clean effective skiding.. it will help so many skiers... cant curve all the time.. just like making love haaaa
