In this video Rich demonstrates the primitive survival skill of stone pecking. Here he uses the technique to fashion a bevel block as a component of a bow drill friction fire set.

G'Day , Rich . Thanks for the video . I'm your viewer up here in South Carolina . My area was once home to the Cherokee and there can be found bits of stone that were made into tools long ago . Years ago a neighbor found a stone tool in a creek . Its about the size of a man's hand , made of hard gray stone , flat and triangular shaped , with a groove pecked or ground around the middle . Imagine the letter A , the groove is where the horizontal line is . I believe the groove was for attaching a handle , probably a forked or split tree branch , or a straight stick steam bent and wrapped around the groove . Years ago my brother and I did some work on a family's house outside of town by a marshy area . The area is rife with deer and cattail plants . The homeowners had a stone that captured rain water at the corner of their house , their dogs and cats drank from it as a watering trough . It was a flat piece of stone , possibly sandstone , about 2ft X 3ft by 8in . The top side was pecked or ground out into a depression . I think it was used as a grindstone for grain , corn , maize , acorns , and nuts . The stone that would be held in the user's hands was absent . Tools made of stone are not in any way inferior to modern technology , they served mankind well for aeons and may outlast their makers . Cheers , Mate !
