This is the first modern arrangement that I've heard where the musicians clearly understand this song and how to work with its modal character. Great job!

lots of contemporary settings of this out there. This is the best. It retains the original reverent feel of the hymn yet makes it sound very today. Great singing and playing!

Paul Gman Fernando Ortega has two renditions of this hymn, and they are equally good. In fact, the one that starts a cappella is, in my opinion, the best ever. He doesn’t slide notes like this lady does.

Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly minded, For with blessing is His hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, Our full homage to demand. King of Kings, Yet born of Mary, As of old earth He stood, Lord of Lords, In human vesture, In the body and the blood; He will give to all the faithful. His own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads it's vanguard on the way, As Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, That the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. At His feet the six-winged seraph, Cherubim, With sleeples eye, Veil their faces to His presence as with ceaseless voice they cry: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Lord Most High!

Too many contemporary Christians use abominable musical settings and totally ignore the church's 2000 year tradition of music. Thank for a quality setting and for using an ancient hymn from a 5th century liturgy.

I'm very happy that it is a song sung in the Roman Catholic Church, but hymns often have a very long and beautifully convoluted history. And in this case, the Roman Catholics come in rather late to the history of this hymn. The words of the hymn come from the Liturgy of Saint James which originated with the Church in Jerusalem around 347. And so, it comes out of the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition, not the Roman Catholic tradition. In 1864, the Greek text of the song was translated into English by an Anglican priest. The English composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) paired the words with a French folk melody for the English Hymnal of 1906 (which was for the Church of England). I'm not sure when the Roman Catholic Church first introduced this hymn into their hymnal, but, as I said, they were latecomers.

I saw this as a link on Sharon Betters fb page but didn't listen to it. My discipleship group is studying the sacrament of the Lord's Table this week. This morning as I am preparing, I thought of my most profound experiences at the Lord' Table and this song was a part of that. I searched KZbin to find your video to share the song with my group. As I listened to it for the first time, I was brought back to that experience at GRPC many years ago. I was signing this song for the Deaf and being very visual myself, was in tears as I set up the scene at the cross. I placed the Angels in heaven but also throughout the scene. The "mortals" were present but the true "awe" of the heavenly beings praising "The Lord Most High" was overwhelming. I had never before imagined how they must have experienced the crucifixion. Thank you for such a powerful reminder and beautiful song.

I'm really moved by this. The solemness and beauty of this rendition can really be used to teach people about the Faith.

Hi Beautiful isn't it - It's my favourite! It's actually way older than the 4th century - It stems from the ancient Divine Liturgy of the Apostle St James. The usual words are these. (those shown at the link below - have been altered ) These are the original English Translation. It's a ancient hymn talking of the Divine Eucharistic Presence of Christ Let all mortal flesh keep silence, And with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly minded, For with blessing in His hand, Christ our God to earth descending Our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, As of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, In the body and the blood; He will give to all the faithful His own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven Spreads its vanguard on the way, As the Light of light descendeth From the realms of endless day, That the powers of Hell may vanish As the darkness clears away. I think the fact that it's impossible to find a stony, solemn version of this hymn, or most other hymns, on youtube is a sign of how vapid people are these days. This silly, vain woman with multiple camera angles on her in this sappy lighting, trilling her voice is the exact opposite of what the hymn stands for. It isn't about you.
@jkbleach49025 жыл бұрын
joe shmo she's praising God in her own way through music, it isn't your place to judge her. If you want a more solemn version of this song, you can go find one.
