The band has stated the song is primarily about a failed relationship and there is also some subtext about a woman that was found dead in the San Diego area at the time that the lead singer, Scott Weiland was writing the song. The first verse is Weiland asking his girlfriend about where she might be headed, knowing that she will not tell him the truth. He is trying to connect with her and she is pushing him away with her apathy. The "mask" that he refers to is her hiding something, possibly an infidelity or secret. The chorus is more directed to the dead girl Weiland read about in the paper. "When the dogs begin to smell her" and "will she smell alone" seems to reference the dogs of a search party and a question about how her last living moments were spent. Weiland says "so much depends on the weather" which describes his girlfriend's changing moods. He asks her if it is raining in her bedroom as a metaphor for her tears. Many times throughout the song Weiland uses the words, "I feel". He is trying to explain why the relationship is not working for him, but he doubts it will make difference to the girl because he thinks she does not even care. And yes Scott Weiland die from a accidental overdose of cocaine, alcohol, and methylenedioxyamphetamine......RIP

I'm not sure what it has to do with a dead girl in San Diego, but my understanding of the dog reference was that his dogs could smell when she'd been...NOT alone; his dogs would tip him off if she'd been cheating.... "So much depends on the weather" means her mood changes, "So is it raining in your bedroom" means "are we gonna get it on tonight?" LOVE this song, thanks George and Ryan!

I did see the dead girl thing as well, tied with statements from the band ... but when it came out my wife was indeed having an affair, so I initially though the cheating angle ... plus, we had a little dog and he would in fact smell her with more purpose on occasions I thought she was with “him” ... so that has always been how I interpreted the song ... oh and ... wasn’t a damn thing wrong with that woman, we just couldn’t live together anymore ...

You know why STP is great? Because they can perform all their songs acoustic style, and still be just as powerful, sometimes more. I appreciate you guys highlighting the lyrics, because songs are not written this way anymore, and I feel it died with his age of music, in the late 90's, early 00's. The unpolished sound of the 60's, 70's and 90's is unrivaled when talking rock music. Again, a great video, awesome conversation, and honesty. Have a great Sunday, you guys! I may be a little off, but yes, the song was based on a news story in which a woman was kidnapped and murdered...I just can't remember the exact circumstances, though. A song about a man lamenting the end of a relationship w a superficial woman. Rain in the bedroom = depression / hope. Mask = the face before he realized her soul. Dogs = potential suitors that aren't him. Great channel, guys!
@amandahepworth36236 жыл бұрын
Matt Kimmel spot on. Everyone says no it's about a murder. Scott weiland even said it was about a relationship he was in..
@markshort60496 жыл бұрын
I agree - I think this is about a relationship. In a lot of places they use dogs to track down escaped criminals (by their smell). Depending on the weather, rain, etc. it can be harder for the tracking dogs to pick up the criminal's scent. Seems to me the gist of what he is saying is that he's pretty sure she's doing something she shouldn't be and lying about it to him (maybe cheating on him?), she was hiding it by putting on a "mask" but he can see through that now, and if he put the bloodhounds out to try to catch her would they smell her and someone else on her also. He basically says she might not care anyway. I think the last part is either saying: 1. He's got time to find someone else who really loves him, or 2. Eventually he's (the dogs) are going to confirm what she has been doing and then he will be sure of it and can move on.

This is one of the few songs where I remember exactly where I was & what I was doing the first time I heard this song. It ALWAYS takes me back to Kessler A.F.B., MS, June/July 1993, doing homework. Changed my life!! R.I.P. Scott Weiland.

Well I really had no idea what the song was about either, other than it's a wicked groove. But this might help. I know "Teen Spirit blah, blah, blah," for me this is THE nineties song. Most iconic 90s songs: 1) Plush-STP 2) Are You Gonna Go My Way -Lenny Kravitz 3) Smells Like Teen Spirit-Nirvana 4) Creep-Radiohead 5) No Rain-Blind Melon You guy's should do 'em all.

The first time I heard Plush, and STP for that matter, was on MTV’s head Bangers Ball. I just came home and turned on the TV and they did a live acoustic version of this. I was just floored by how strong of voice Scott Weiland had. I went out the next day and bought the CD, loved ever song on it.
