The observations they’re making are so incredibly intelligent. You never hear people talk about a Deftones song sounding like r&b, or picking out the subtleties that point to a bands main influences. Just because the Deftones are heavy, doesn’t mean their influences were.

it actually blows my mind that they were picking up on the hip hop influence that deftones has because that is one of the inspirations for their music. Chino the lead singer has said that they all used to listen to a lot of hip hop growing up and rap and it gave them a lot of inspiration

To be fair, there is a groove to their stuff that has a lot more in common with hip hop than most rock bands. You could easily imagine someone rapping over the instrumental to Change, for example.

I love how Chino always sings odd notes of a scale. It’s the same thing as phrasing of jazz chords. I think that’s one thing that leads to the R&B feel(aside from the grooviness of the rhythm). He lands on a lot of 4th, 6th and 7th notes of a scale which gives it a unresolved feeling. With the soft breathy tone makes it so original.

@@lukehewko260 I disagree in the 90's Slipknot, Korn, Deftones were all pushed away to "numetal" because the gatekeeping metal heads of those days didnt feel they belonged with regular metal. Opinions changed as these bands continued to put out hits and now they're respected by most metal heads.

Flappy Terryfolds I kinda get why you would say that? But, their first album was very “Nu-Metal influenced. Rap style vocals, build ups to heavy one liner breakdowns, heavy samples and turntables. I just think the lines between metal genres can be a little too overblown.

@@hiphopnin3 The true gatekeeping metal heads of the present still don't consider any of this nu shit to be anywhere remotely close to actual metal, not even in the same ballpark. Not that there's any problem if you like this stuff because lots of people do, that's cool, knock yourselves out. But we'd just appreciate it if you all would just call this bouncy commercial drivel something else. Despite having "metal" in its name nu-metal is not actually metal to any self respecting elitist gatekeeper. Opinions haven't changed one iota among the old guard, it's just that a lot of younger people have come along since the 90's and decided that they're metalheads now and that all this poseur shit can be metal. Has guitars and it's "heavy" so then it must be metal, right? What else could it possibly be? No point in trying to change their minds and they can listen to whatever they want with my blessing, variety is a wonderful thing. But to state that these bands are "respected by most metalheads" is simply factually incorrect. The fact is true purist elitist metalheads still don't want to have anything to do with bands like Deftones, Korn, RATM, Five Finger Dick Punch and Balloon-knot and will never afford them a single ounce of respect.

I like how they said ‘raw’ at one point, cause I always use that word to describe Deftones. The extremely refined, heavy drums and riffs (with a hip hop head bop vibe to them) then Chino’s vocals over them has a very raw sound to them. Which makes sense since they literally recorded their first album playing in one big studio together.

One of the keys to understanding this band's groove is in the fact that they tuned the guitar's lowest string down a full step allowing power chords (root note + 5th) to be played with a single finger. By tuning this way they can walk their fingers along the fret board and play riffs that flow in a way that would not be possible with standard tuning.
