This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection kzbin.infoUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

Thanks! I have to replace the corner post of my house and thought a car jack would work to hold a temp post in place while the main post is put into position. Now, I know that will work after looking at your video. Great Job!!!

Know it is an older video, but just did this project in 2021. Wanted to say thanks for the great video and tips! Made my project easier!

Do you anchor those bottom plates to the concrete? Maybe I missed that part?

House looks great! I'm in the middle of this right now- just ripped down the old porch ceiling and will be replacing one rotted post. Planning on boxing them out to about 7" square.

Great instructional video. I’ve got just 1 post to replace, for the same reason. It’s become rotten at the bottom . I probably should put up 2 new post and go larger like yours . My front porch only has 2 beams needed to hold the overhang of the house over the concrete porch. I’m not by far a extremely skilled carpenter as your self, I know just enough to get some Jobs like this done, and a few other thing’s. I’m learning little at a time though through Small DIY Stuff & videos such as yours are very helpful! I bought the exact same Jack u were using , not only to keep in trunk of my Car, but also for jacking up the porch when I got around to replacing my bad Post.

Do you have any more info on the post base, the web site is pretty generic. I've been searching for some like those but haven't had any luck. Thanks in advance, and your post looks great!

That was great. I'm looking to do the exact same thing but have been torn whether to do 4x4 and then wrap in pine/ cedar ABC's stain... or use a treated 6x6 and stain. Your 6x6s looked pretty fresh, no issues with the stain soaking in?
@mikejustice11964 жыл бұрын
What stain do you use for the 85% moisture content in those treated pine post there with the splits in them?
@hollewoodfurniture81906 жыл бұрын
Columns look great Shawn! Why wouldn't you want to cut them on the table saw? Thanks!
@StoneandSonsWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! The columns would have been too heavy and cumbersome for a safe cut on the table saw.
@Kentucky-ev7bd4 жыл бұрын
Looks great. My only question is on the stain. Don't you have to let treated woods cure for 6 months or so?
@angelalongino90454 жыл бұрын
were the post pressure treated? If so did you have to wait to stain them?

Do you stain the end of the post base to help protect from water?
@LOdom-ws8xv3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. Getting ready to replace rotten 6×6's for first time. Concrete surrounds the posts im replacing and posts were on dirt. Would it be best to fill in with concrete before installing? Just doing a little research for best way to do it.

Are the columns held in place just by the weight of the structure above it? Are anchors needed?
@dpayne714 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same thing..
@mattgranger4223 Жыл бұрын
Curious, were the half post needed for structural reasons or just aesthetics?

Looks great! And yeah, a bandsaw woulda been ideal for that ripping. I bet that took you two hours!
@StoneandSonsWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
It didn't take too long, but longer than I wanted. lol
@robinadahl78412 жыл бұрын
So the roof rests on the columns? You don't have to fasten them in any way?
@JackmanWorks6 жыл бұрын
Looks great! I was wondering how you were going to do those half post and I'm not jealous because that treated SYP is tough stuff haha. Btw, best way I've found to cut 6x6 down to length is just a cut around all 4 sides with a circular saw and handsaw the rest if it needs it.
@StoneandSonsWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! The new columns made a huge difference.
@hisnewlife35434 жыл бұрын
Are these methods you used also applied to vinyl victorian columns with a metal post in the center? I am worried they will all move when I set a new one in.
@StoneandSonsWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure about that. I would ask a contractor in your area to take a look.

Did you ever find a base like what he used? I can’t find them anywhere either. I can find them, but they don’t raise the post off the concrete.

Hey, thanks for the video. I have a back porch with 13 columns that need to be replaced and I've been looking for those post bases. Do you know how i could get my hands on that type base? I have looked at all local stores and internet and have come up empty handed.

I was told wood cannot touch concrete because it can dry rot. You need a footer underneath.
@greatitbroke6 жыл бұрын
Man I would have thrown that 6 X 6 through the rip blade on the band saw. It was most likely spruce or fir. Its not too common to see pine in PT lumber. Nice job though they look great. Love the stain.
@StoneandSonsWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Greg. They were sold as treated pine. Either way, it's done. Phew. lol
@AppalachianLife6 жыл бұрын
In the South East US, most treated wood is Southern Yellow Pine.

couldn't you just buy two 6x3s instead of cutting them?
@StoneandSonsWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
My local store didn’t have them
@supaflyg353 жыл бұрын
4x6 would made things easier then cutting 6x6 in half🤷🏽♂️
@woodguy974 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you just use a 2x6?
@holliwood32263 жыл бұрын
Instead of cutting the 6x6 in half, I think I'd use a 2 x 6 or 4 x 6 and call it good.
