Great job. Good tool and material display was useful. Just 3 suggestions: if you want it to look flush at the top, use a Kreg jig and wood fillers to fill the gaps that the toe screws left. You can seal the cut ends of the post with either oil based paint or even silicone caulking to resist/minimize rot. Also, blow out the hole in the post base anchor so there's nothing in the way of the anchor bolt to grab properly. Other than that, this should all work fine for a DIYer

Hey Ron, nice job. Question, I'm looking to replace two posts that are holding up a patio overhang, I'm concerned that the old ones might be starting to rot at the bottom, they have been in there for 16 years. Do you think it would be ok to cut the old ones at the bottom flush with the patio and then put the new ones right on top of the old cut off piece that is still in the ground on the footing? Of course I would use some heavy duty brackets at the bottom bolted into the patio itself. Would the 4 inch thick patio be strong enough to support the overhang?

Bruh Ron!! Nice Job!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!! ???? Susta here would like to know what type paint to get for bathroom cabinets and how do you take the center broad off in front of the sink?
@rontalley2 жыл бұрын
Valspar cabinet and furniture paint but be sure to prime first. Used Valspar bonding paint for the primer. Center is sometimes clipped on, stapled or glued. Watch the video on the tip out tray to see how I removed mines.

The column end cuts should have been field treated with preservative after being cut. Pressure treatment does to fully penetrate the column.
@kookiethebear2 ай бұрын
If this work was performed in a high-uplift zone, it will not pass inspection or last through a major storm. You must use threaded rod and strapping to connect the post to the beam for uplift prevention. Those screws will shear, allowing the roof to tear off.

Question - I have porch with gable roof (12x16) with 10feet high from ground. Wondering if posts for porch should be exactly "under" the outer wall (parallel to house Wall) or can Gerd/beam (horizontal to support porch) can be placed "right under the outer wall - parallel to house" OR 1 foot inside (towards the house) with helical posts into ground ? Please let me know If I have been able to articulated my question properly for you to under stand precisely. Thank you in advance.
@grantmeyer039 ай бұрын
Awesome content! Quick question I was hoping to put up a post as a light support. How sturdy would that base be if it didn't have the support on top? It would only be a 4x4, probably 8 foot high. Thanks!
@rontalley9 ай бұрын
With the post brackets and some beefy screws, a 6x6 or 4x4 sits pretty sturdy.

How much weight does the bottle jack have to be rated for if you're doing posts for a covered patio? A 4-ton is like $30 but a 50-ton one is like $900!

If you nail it to the top and anchor it to the bottom, what will happen when that distance dramatically flexes due to expanding / shrinking clay?
@Pseudify7 ай бұрын
What about applying some type of adhesive to the top of that post instead of having those toe screws showing?

Typically you cap over the bracket and screws like I showed at the end of the video but whatever works and is long lasting!
