Except Superman did NOTHING to put anyone in danger in *Man of Steel.* He was having a miserable time trying to _stop_ the chaos and not doing very well at it. The movie made it clear that he was in way over his head and too inexperienced to handle the situation. Oh, wait. I forgot that it was acceptable to accuse *Man of Steel* of things it never did instead of judging the movie based on what it actually did.

Superman works like this too. He gets his powers from the sun, so when he's badly defeated he just flies to the sun to recharge. This really reminds me of vampire films where the shadow of Nosferatu/Dracula would cause instant withering of flowers. Infection doesn't work fast like that. Even his victims go through a period of sickness.

Superman IV did have one good purpose: Christopher Reeve, in exchange for doing this, was able to get financing for a project he had wanted to do for years. I feel like this movie manages the almost impossible: it covers Superman, a concept that has been handled poorly on many occasions, and manages to do it in a bad way that actually makes it entertaining. Like fucking up Superman is like fucking up a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When the comics make things too ridiculous, or when Man of Steel gets the tone wrong, it's always an epic failure that nobody likes. But this movie manages to make things ridiculous, while maintaining that perfect childish level of cheesiness that makes watching it for the first time feel nostalgic. It's like getting a glimpse back to childhood: when you'd play with toys and set up these crazy fights between two action figures, and they knock over blocks you put up, and in the end you have one of the action figures pick up a Hotwheels car and place it in a little jail cell and say "You're busted, evildoer!" This is just one of those movies that just inspires childish creativity.
@TheRealNormanBates8 жыл бұрын
+KamekAdvance "Fucking up Superman is like fucking up a peanut butter and jelly sandwich." That is... fantastic. You are absolutely correct. What makes Superman interesting is when he CAN'T use his godlike power (do you save Lois, or Hackensack, New Jersey?) and has to decide who lives or dies, or has to THINK as opposed to just punch the problem away.

Y'know what could've been a far more interesting movie? If Superman resolved to rid the world of nukes but no one supported him so decided to do it all in secret, not realizing the political repercussions that would happen later. Then Superman would feel terrible and everyone would hate him until he did something awesome to make them like him again.
@dudeman56858 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've read the original story too, and it is just as naive as Superman IV - he gets the two leaders in the same room and they can't figure out why they are fighting, so Supes says that it is obvious they are just pawns of munitions manufacturers. I laughed my ass off. That is so simplistic it is almost a parody of a "peace" message. Complex geopolitical issues can't be just wished away like that.

From a purely objective standpoint, Superman should go for Lacie rather than Lois. The only reason Lois ever begins to truly care about Clark is when she finds out that he's Superman; once she "forgets", she goes back to ignoring/insulting him (Smallville's Clark/Lois relationship is more believable, since they actually formed a respectful bond over time and Clark was able to show courage in his "non-super" form; once Lois found out about his secret she was already beginning to love Clark anyway). In Lacie's case, however, she cares for Clark, despite all his apparent goofy nerdy ways, and would probably love him even more once she knew he was Superman, rather than his "super-ness" needing to be an absolute requirement like it is in Lois' case.
@Nickman8268 жыл бұрын

+S.A.M. Wouldn't it be funny if she hated Clark the moment she found out he was Superman? Ie. the nerdy "needs a good woman to give him guidance" routine was all an act, and thus Clark Kent is a lying jerk because he thinks humans are too stupid to figure out he's Superman?

The CGI, while incredibly obvious, did allow for some of the most exciting flying sequences this side of the How To Train Your Dragon films. Now, do I think Man of Steel is a good Superman movie? Nope. I consider it to be the forth best...by default. I consider it to be better than Superman Returns, Superman III, and Superman IV in that order. The best ones being Superman: The Movie, The Richard Donner Cut of Superman II, and Regular Superman II. But, that's just me. I do respect Brad for his steadfast opinion.

Superman 4 is a bad film, but an enjoyably cheesy bad film. Man of Steel is a decent film, but not a great Superman film. Zack Snyder himself has described Superman as a boring character and wanted him to be a brooding anti-hero. If he didn't want to make a Superman film...why call it Superman?! Why not create a new superhero for the modern audience or use one of the hundreds of dark and brooding anti-heroes from across comics and manga? Yes, Superman has killed at least 5 times in 90 years, but Superman would weep and be emotionally devastated at inadvertantly killing or failing to prevent millions of lives lost and an entire city destroyed. He wouldn't french kiss in front of Metropolis's ruin. That's something Deadpool would do. That's something Frank Castle would do. That is NOT something Superman would do!

At least Man of Steel wasn't a complete pile of shit that damaged Superman's image... It did damage his image, it's not a pile of shit.

Coming back to this years later, Jon Cryer was actually a really fucking good Lex Luthor in the Supergirl TV series on CW. Honestly, it's my favorite interpretation of the character in live action, because he's hilarious AND a bastard.

Oh Brad, don't you know? "That in a Superman film not one person dies. Not one person dies". Sure Chris, whatever you say. No really, that is a quote Christopher Reeves said talking about this movie that he wrote. Look it up. It's amazing. Oh come on, Lenny Luthor is the most enjoyable part of this movie!

Gene Hackman is to Superman IV, what Sean Connery was to Highlander II. Both movies are shit, but with actors like Hackman and Connery, they become shit with class... I think Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is one of the worst movies ever made... But at the same time, its very fun to watch. It kinda has a Plan 9 from Outer Space feel to it... The film fails on just about every level of filmmaking. Its almost amazing... Story wise, this movie is just an excuse to preach against the cold war, and shove anti-nuclear propaganda in our faces. The whole film feels like a ninety minute PSA special. Go back and watch the scenes where Superman speaks against nuclear weapons and tell me you don't get that vibe... P.S... With no intention of starting an argument, I just want it to be known... I love Man of Steel. I consider it to be my all time favorite Superman movie... But I still thought your MoS jokes were pretty funny...
@sydneystroud43976 жыл бұрын
It's actually consistent with character whether we go with "Superdickery" of Golden Age Superman or with the more modern adaptations/characterizations of Superman, even in Red Son or Justice Lord-incarnation. Superman would probably favor a world with weapons of mass destruction.
@Dreadjaws8 жыл бұрын
I'm fine with people not liking Man of Steel. It wasn't for everyone. What annoys me is the need for _constantly attacking that film_. Not even the Star Wars prequels get that treatment, why do people feel the need to do that?
@StonedGremlinProductions8 жыл бұрын
+Dreadjaws As someone who strongly dislikes Man of Steel, I guarantee that it does not get a fraction of the hate that the prequels do.
@Dreadjaws8 жыл бұрын
+Stoned Gremlin Productions I don't think you understand what I meant. Yes, the prequels get a lot of hate, but people don't feel the need to mention it every single opportunity they have. Yet go to, say, Cracked.com and notice how they slip some MoS hate in every other article, wheter it has any relation to superheroes or not. Watch some reviews by certain youtubers and notice how in the middle of talking about whatever movie or even videogame they're reviewing they'll reach as far as they can into a metaphor to put a complain against MoS. Again, no one does this with the prequels. Mention a prequel or any Star Wars film and yes, they'll rant like crazy, but they don't just start doing it in the middle of completely unrelated stuff (I'm sure someone does, but they are few).
@Precursortom8 жыл бұрын
+Dreadjaws MoS was hyped and is still in recent memory. It makes sense for people to bring that up. The Star Wars prequels ended nearly a decade ago, so there's a special level of hate for them for it to go on so long.
@Dreadjaws8 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Harrison Look, I used the prequels as a generic example because they're well known disliked movies, but feel free to replace them with any other recent movie that's also disliked by a large percentage of the population, and the same applies. No other movie generates this kind of reaction.
@dswynne8 жыл бұрын
+Dreadjaws Nope, not even. The SW prequels still get more hate than MoS, simply because the PT had three chances to get it right. With MoS, there is still a chance for a course correction.
