We were the first vehicle on site on the 1st June in a Chinese six panorama elite. The fuel line from the back, a small bore copper pipe that ran the whole length under the floorboards, blocked up. It sputtered and stopped. No way would we ever have found the blockage. Hardly any tools... So we scrounged a huge container & syphoned the diesel out of the tank to fill it. Took the engine cover off and split the fuel rail just above the rail to the injectors. Started a syphon with some reinforced hose. As soon as it was running I jammed it onto the fuel rail. Balancing the fuel on the dash I sat beside it. Held the end of the hose as high as I could without air getting in to keep as much pressure as possible. The bloody thing started! From somewhere near Wincanton every mile felt like a victory! Finally, we climbed up onto the chalk and made it to the site. Damn that felt good! No bugger there! Grass sy armpit height in places we parked at the top of Rainbow Drive and watched a town grow around us. Stayed the whole month. Right up to when the Krishnas were hoovering up the waifs and strays in their bus with that spooky busy of their leader in the front. They'd fed us some gorgeous food. Bima burgers were excellent as long as you could cope with a Krishna on each side of you as you ate trying to convince us to join. We politely declined 😆 That was one hell of a month! Every festival after the henge felt like your Nan's garden party with cucumber sarnies after that! The Battle of the Beanfield hurt like hell the next year. I'd heard it would've been the 12th consecutive year in '85 and we'd've been able to hold the festival in perpetuity if it had happened. Instead they sicked riot police with no insignia on the convoy, fresh from beating up the miners at Orgreave... horrible!

thanks, now i am full of even more yerning for the stonehenge free festival, bring it back, it was free in them days we didn't think all that freedom would leave us or be taken away, we just lernt so much from back then that we didn't see till it was gone. you could trip out and talk to most people even if you didn't know them. the vibe was like nothing else. i wish my kids had a free festival to take their kids to instead of this plastic money land ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. LOVE IT NICE ONE

Went for 4 weeks this year ace fun. When I see Glastonbury on the box now it just makes me shudder. With the BBC's running commentary like it's some sort of sports event with their blabbering pundits. Back in the day you didn't tell people you went to festivals as you were thought of as some weirdo, so it was a real underground movement. Now it just seems like some middle class, middle age right of passage dinner party one-upmanship.

so many memories - deciding last minute to hitch down from preston, arriving without a tent driven by a squaddie, getting totally lost for a day or so, finding people who'd let us stay in their bender, poison girls doing tired of crying as the sun was setting, bored by hawkwind and finally falling asleep, missing the solstice, debating about the punks v hippies issues, amazed that people left for glastonbury but glad for the stuff they left behind.

My 2nd Stonehenge at 18... hooked up with the convoy for a few weeks before the 'push' onto the henge site.. Happy Daze!! Played with 'Unicorn' in the Tibetan Ukranian Mountain Troop marquee. a whole month of Festynesstivities. Free Peanut Butter Massages by gorgeous girls seem like a good idea when you're tripping... until after, when you suddenly realise the 'catch', lol... I wonder how many others got caught with that one... STILL living 'where the freaks hang out' in N.NSW Aus. Memories+++

Hahaha! I saw the Tibetan Mountain Troupe and asked a guy called The Venusian, who had a baker's van fill of tat to sell, what they were doing in the UK. He said "No mate, they're not Tibetan. They just want to go there!" 😆 I bartered a huge, circular mirror from him. The perfect size to place on a barrel with a semi circle of candles around one side. "Ally ally ally!" 🌬️ ☮️

Excellent. The good old days. One of my favourite memories from those times is the sound of "Summertime Blues" wafting across the stones when the "druids" were doing their thing in the early seventies. The camp/festival site was quite a walk away then.

glastonbury festival always was the poor mans stonehenge, or rather it is now the richmans stonehenge, admitedly the never ending 8 hour set by hawkwind on the solstice in the last henge 1984 was genuinely one of the worst musical experiences of my life but in other respects stonehenge festie was so classic...bring it back! where else could you pitch up a bender at one of the prime crossroads and wake up one day to find your special spot has been colonised by the windsor hells angels marquee? (followed by a very sensible and rapid relocation... lol)

Borg...these "hippies" organised an at least four week long concert/festival at Henge, with tens of thousands attending. Personally it was one of the most amazing experiences i've had...life changing. Think you could do better? I'm not a hippy, most there would have laughed at the concept. If you were to confront us, you would become aware of this.

Me and my GF were laying atop a burial mound, flat on our backs looking up. We'd just been to the Chai bus (and you know what went into that Chai. Plastic bags that'd very nearly been emptied, the last few blotters from one guy and the broken mikes from the bottom of the bag. Anyone involved in commerce used that Chai urn as a handy place to lose all sorts in. It changed by the hour and got stronger day by day... Anyway, the classic white summer cumulus puffs of cloud above my head formed into gingerbread men shapes, they held hands and formed rings in the sky dancing above me I gasped and all I could think of to say was "Are you watching them too?" My GF said "What? The rings of dancing gingerbread men clouds?" Gasp! We shouldn't be sharing the same sky, seeing the same thing! "Y-y-yes!" I stammered! Bugger me sideways that Chai was so good it was bloody telepathic! It's surprising what happens on top of those mounds...
