Thank you so much for the review. A few days ago I ordered the MFT3 table and the OF1400, it took me a month to take the decision and I can't wait for it to arrive. Actually I'm paying a lot of attention to all your videos and reviews cause I'm setting up my own shop, and for an amateur like me your reviews are just PERFECT. I bought the 1400. So far so good. The dust collection is stunningly delightful. I made a 4' x 8' festool style workbench top using 3/4" mdf. 325 or so 20mm holes and zero cleanup. Using a router is once again a pleasure.

Hi! Another great overview! Thank you! I have of1400 for a year and I'm using it for a raised panels. When the router placed in my cms-of I can set the bit which is wider than a router mouth from the top of the table. Just lift your router up and you'll be able to reach the collet and insert the bit. You have to be careful setting the bit depth, you must lower the router speed. Maybe it's dangerous but it works.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 10 жыл бұрын
Velvaruz Yes, it can be done. I would use a piece of MDF with a cut-out for the panel raising cutter and held firmly on the top of the CMS. This means that the bit can spin without risking any damage to the router body or CMS insert. It is essential that the router cutter is properly held in the collet and the speed has to be kept low. I have the OF 2200 in my CMS unit and so panel raising is very easy. Many thanks for the kind words. Peter

Good Routers , I have the OF1400 and owned it for some years . Its a very capable machine ,...but beware ...I discovered while cutting a worktop on a mitre jig it produced a slight wave on both male and female cuts . I then used my Makita 3612C Router on the same jig on a few test items of worktop and the results were near perfect . On inspection the OF1400 Guide bush has slight play when inserted in the router . For the price its still a good router with many features but for better results on wortops its the Makita 3612 C beats it hands down

Good review as always, and also a happy new year to you. I bought the OF1400 a couple of months ago after your review wiped away my remaining doubts. I have done quite a variety of work with it, from mortising 30x50mm 100mm deep with a template to common edge work and the OF never let me down. It currently sits in an Incra LS router table with a Jessem Lift, and does a perfect job there. The attachable dust collection completely seals the router with the table. This is especially great when grooving because the usual table extraction from the side cannot catch that dust. I have yet to try bigger cutters like the mitre cutter you showcased a couple of weeks ago but I´m confident the OF will have enough power for even those.

Terry De'ath Hi Terry, Sounds like a great choice. You will find the OF1010 is a treat to use as it is nice and light but has plenty of power. It will come with 1/4" and 8 mm collets. I can't remember which collets the OF1400 comes with (I know it has the 1/2") but you ought to try and ensure that you have 8mm and 1/4" as well as that will give you more flexibility. Christopher Kelby Hi Christopher, When I look at all the hand-held routing tasks that I do over 90% can be done with the OF 1010 and some of the remaining 10% could be done if I had the right 8mm cutters. So, the OF 1010 will be your "go to" router and the OF 1400 can be used in a CMS and only taken out once in a while when needed. Thank you for getting Stone Message - please let Steven Spielberg know about it ! Cheers. Peter

I wish that the 2200 router would be compatible with the L32 hole drilling kit because you can use the 2200 in a router table, such as the Sawstop table which opens a whole bunch of new applications for the router, not just the portable uses because the 1010 is good for that being nice to handle. The 1400 is supposed to be the middle ground so how does it do in a router table, especially the Sawstop. Plus does the dust extraction have to be changed to a dedicated dust extractor...for a table.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
I have my OF1400 in my Festool CMS-OF and it is perfect. I have no idea how it would work in the Sawstop table. The dust extraction may vary with different makes of table and is almost certainly best with dedicated hoses going to your normal extractor. Peter

@@NewBritWorkshop Actually that whole entire Sawstop setup is approximately $7,000 cdn. There is also an outfeed table that folds down and a huge sliding fence. I don't know why there are so many horsepower options like 1.75, 2, 3, 5, 7 horsepower motors but 1.75 on 110 volts with a Forest blade will cut hardwood like butter. I only have an outdoor place quonset 1,200 square feet for that, nothing indoor. It isn't that much money for a setup like that. Veritas hand tools will do most of everything that that huge machine can do.

How would you go about routing in finger drawer pulls if you didn't have a router table? Or is it just not possible?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
You could set up a jig with a place for the drawer front that allows you to work through a batch of fronts. You would probably need a template or straight edge depending on the style of pull you want to create and this needs to be positioned exactly right. Then you can either have it set up for a bearing guided cutter, a normal router guide or for the side of the router base to follow whatever template you choose. Peter

Hi peter, as a general carpenter I am thinking of buying a new router for fitting kitchen worktops as my previous makita 1/2 was stolen, as I would not be fitting everyday would you say the 1400 would be man enough or do you think I should spend a bit more money and get the 2200? Regards Bradley

Hi Bradley, I am sorry to hear that you old router was stolen. The OF1400 will manage the work but if you are going to regularly tackle kitchen work top fitting then you will find the OF2200 much more suitable. It is also far better at dust collection, is easier to set up and has a gentle start-up so it does not jerk as you get it going. My current router setup puts the OF1400 in my router table where it does a great job. I then mainly use the OF1010 (baby router) for almost everything else and have the OF2200 for the more demanding freehand or rail guided tasks. I hope that this helps. Peter

Hey Peter, is the OF 1400 capable of cutting 38mm kitchen worktops using a butt & scribe jig?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 10 жыл бұрын
Lerkio xG No problem at all. If you were doing 10 or more a day then I would recommend the OF2200 but the OF1400 is a powerful machine, with an 1/2" collet and easy to handle. Peter

Thanks Peter, I've been considering purchasing a 1400 for a while but I was concerned that it wasn't powerful enough for my needs. Perhaps for a future video you could do a similar comparison of the Festool sanders? Thanks again.

Hi Peter, again another great honest review from someone who actually uses but more importantly OWENS these tools and purchased with his own money. After watching your videos and listening to your advice I believe I will be purchasing the 1400 unless you advise differently- as a carpenter this router will be used for morticing such as door locks/ face plates, , notching for 4” butt hinges,trining plywood to wooden frames etc. in your profession opinion have I made the right choice? Cheers

Hi Dan, I think that you have got it spot on. The OF1400 can take all sizes of cutter shank and so for those heavy tasks you can use cutters as big as they come. Some find the ergonomics of the OF1400 need a while to get used to - I found the machine slightly strange to handle at first but then grew used to it and found it to be perfectly okay. The OF1010 would not cover the full range of carpentry needs and the OF2200 would be a bit heavy for the more delicate work. So, good choice. Peter

In the UK it is about £450. I use my OF1010 more than any other router and it is brilliant. Just remember that it only has 1/4" and 8 mm colletts. Peter

Hi Peter, How long did it take before you became accustomed to the handle/trigger arrangement. I have only used my 1400 a couple of times because it feels like I should be left handed.

Michael Tricker Hi Michael, I should have mentioned that in the video. Some people think that it looks strange but I found using it came very naturally. I like the symmetrical two handed design for the OF2200 but am more than happy with the handle for the other two. Peter

Unfortunatly the OF2200 doesn't work with the Festool LR32 system. But at the same time it has a better base option for the FS rails.

Hello Peter, I've just come across this video looking for more information on the OF2200 and OF1400. I found your video really helpful but I'm wondering which router you'd recommend for doing kitchen worktops?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ross, For me it would be the OF2200 but if that is too expensive you can take second best (for kitchen work) the OF1400. I have both and would not swap either for anything. I use the OF2200 for the bigger hand held jobs and keep the OF1400 in my Festool CMS router table. Peter

I get Stone Message at least! New credit card number by my friend, at least! Now I will try to read it with my poor english! Good start for new year.... btw you who are so clever, why don't design a diy boom arm for Festool CT26 and 32....you due it, I bought both two after your review and you are right...fantastic machines! But boom my opinion is too expansive for that kind of object.... Do you have in england some shop like in usa that sold refurbished tools? Any suggestion? Thank you again for be our best friend advisor;-) Sincerely your friend Christian

christian buzio Hi Christian, Thank you for buying the book - I am sure that you will manage the English. I do not need a boom arm as I have my bungee stretched above my work area and the hose goes over that - it works really well. A bungee costs just $2. There are not many people who refurbish tools these days but sometimes you can ick up a bargain on ebay. Take care and enjoy your new tools. Peter

Nobody expects... That is interesting. I have had my OF2200 in my router table for the last 3 years and recently put the OF1400 in there instead. I rate the OF2200 as one of the 3 finest tools that Festool makes (Domino DF700 and Conturo are the other 2). It has near perfect ergonomics with everything available without needing to take either hand off the machine. I admit that it is not light but then most of the time it is resting on the surface of whatever one is working on. I do have the OF1010 for more delicate work. Many thanks for your views. Peter

CHECK THAT THE BARS WHEN PLACED IN THE ROUTER LIFT ON THE FAR SIDE FROM THE LOCKING LEVER. THIS THROWS IT OUT ESPECIALLY WHEN USED ON THE GUIDE RAIL. THEN IT DOES NOT LET THE ROUTER LAY FLAT ON THE WORKPIECE. THIS MEANS YOU DO NOT GET A PERFECT 90 DEGREES CUT IN THE WORKPIECE OR ON THE EDGE. I GET AROUND THIS BUY SHIMMING THE BARS WITH THICK FOIL WHICH THEN MAKE THE BASE SIT PERFECTLY FLAT ON THE WORKPIECE. THE HOLES IN THE BASE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DILLED NOT CAST IN THE BASE.

+Jacob hede pihl Hello Jacob, It all depends on what you want to make with your router. I would guess that the OF 1010 would be a good start as the smaller 6 mm or 8 mm cutters will not be quite so expensive. Good luck. Peter

If you are going to offer "constructive criticism" then you have to follow any critical comment with a thorough analysis of the alternatives and that does not mean the $60 router in the bargain bin a your local DIY store. You have to compare like with like.
