you'd be surprised at how many folks have the livestock on the trailer but have no fence, water or setup for raising them. I'd say 90% of folks starting out don't prepare and learn some hard lessons within the first year....we learned the hard way with goats early on

Great video. People need to hear these kinds of facts more often from people like you they admire on YT, and social media in general. So many love the farom/homestead concept and what they see here... but it's easy to convince oneself you'll be able to achieve the outcome with out the real input. Every time I watch one of you videos I find myself wondering how on earth you ever have time to complete any projects with all the time consuming, quality video production!!! Yet somehow you do... and we thank you for it! :-)

We have so much in common, my wife and I nurses in Australia and bought our farm 6 months ago and start to build our dream and we have no background in farming and learning along the way! But the different is, our farm is quote fully established by previous owner but still plenty jobs to do. keepup the good work and I hope one day I can retired from nursing and only work in my farm like you .

so, we're currently selling by the lb locally, and we'll start shipping beef early next month all over the country. Instead of building a bigger operation I’d like to go as small as possible. Keep the acreage way down, two mini jerseys for milk, easy-to-care-for chickens for eggs and meat, no-till garden for produce, mini orchard for fruit, as few expensive machines as possible, keep expenses down to a minimum, forget about expensive toys cars etc…. I’d like to get money out of the picture as much as possible. I can imagine getting so self-sufficient and getting expenses down so low that property taxes and fuel are the only real monetary expenses you need to worry about. I guess the Amish do it but they require a whole community to keep it going. I dunno, I just don’t like turning a farm into a business. I’d just like to live and work without getting money involved
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer Жыл бұрын
mini cow....waste of money my friend....you simply have to spend money on infrastructure, not that could be a sawmill to cut your lumber and build your dream....plant a fruit tree and get fruit in 10 years....tractors and trucks are a necessity and my take on a mini cow is just as much work, just as much fencing and 1/4 the return. I'd love to have a milk cow on the farm, but that means milking 2 times per day...why go to the trouble of milking a mini cow and getting a half gallon or less per day v/s just having a dairy cow.....money sucks! I get it....and living off the land is great....so spend the money, get set up right and then live off the land my friend. That's why you see me spending it upfront v/s scraping by and making it harder on myself
@yeboscrebo4451
@yeboscrebo4451 Жыл бұрын
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I dunno, a mini Jersey or two would provide waaay more milk than I’d drink every day so why would I need anything more? I don’t need a herd to make money to buy food when I can drink the food right off the teat and keep the tax man out of things. Sawmill is a great idea. Most fruit trees where I live in California produce in less than five years. I just see so many people with more space than they need which requires more and bigger machines. Then they need to spend more money on more shop space and tools to maintain the machines… it’s just a treadmill that never ends. If I can keep things as simple as possible and as small-scale as possible…. It just seems so much more appealing to me.

@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer Жыл бұрын
in our industry...it's called "line breeding" and it's common practice, both in livestock and in wildlife. The big buck with the best genetics breeds back his does...whether it's his daughter or not. That being said, we stray from inbreeding, but line breeding to get good genetics is common practice, it's not like primates (humans, monkeys)
