I've been on the puppy hunt for about a month now. I was certain I'd watched every KZbin video I could find about puppies until tonight! All of your videos are informative and constructive. Even as a single person with a 40+ hour week job after watching your videos I feel confident I'll be able to raise a well mannered dog. Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos!!

My family watched this on Friday night and Saturday morning we set up an obstacle course. Holy cow, our 15 week old pup completed the course off lead today (Sunday). I had no idea he was this smart! Thanks for all the info. I can't wait to learn (& teach my pup) more. P.S. We loved the part when your son fell down. Our pup fell off the ramp and we did not run to rescue him, he corrected himself by himself.

thank you and your family for all you do and the videos, I have 12wk. old bmc/gsd (american malinois. ), and was having some training difficulty. (owner problem not the dog) went looking for some info and found your videos, really like your techniques and you solved my issue with a simple search (biting issue) . amazed at how fast this dog is learning and what we have been able to do in just a few short weeks.... ordered a copy of dont shoot the dog.. your small challanges course and our local playground have alot i common, at 12wks she is doing stairs, slide and even the bleachers at the ball field. loved the corner fetch idea, works better than other things I have done.

I don’t believe you could have said anything more key to life than when you spoke of laughing at your son and teaching him about adversity in life. It applies to little people the same as little puppies. I heard it said years ago that you have to let your kids fall out of the little trees so they will know what to do in the big ones. I am totally disgusted with namby-pamby parents who are raising entitled whiners. Thank you! I just hit the subscribe button.

Can you do something about socialising with other dogs? My dog does a big freak out when I let him play with small dogs. He's huge, he started out fine with bitty dogs but since he's grown nobody'll let my dog anywhere near bitty dogs because he's so big and still growing into himself. He claws me to bits if anyone assumes they can interrupt a walk, he walks on my left, my left leg was full of dog holes, he kept trying to kill himself on the martingale collar he was on. We went on after a quick chat, and I was hoping he'd still have the manners I taught him when he was little.

Hey Stonnie, amazing videos and amazing info you are sharing with the world. Thx for that! I have a very basic question: I rescued a German shepherd last week. She’s 9 weeks old now. I have no idea of her genetics (ref. Displasia). I have heard many dog handlers, and vets saying GS shouldn’t go up the stairs, ramps, etc. in the first year, because you can make them develop hip displasya in the future. WHat is your experience with that? Because I am dying to build a nice circuit and exercise with her. Let me know when you get a chance! Thx!

My dog is so immature, smart and a smarty pants but we hit age 6 month and got past the teething stage and man everything we taught her went out the door, we are retraining her daily, its exhausting, leash walking has become just impossible. So back to square one, if I try to tire her more then there is nothing left there, we are in that rock and a hard place. Mind you she is one of many dogs we have had, and never came across this, but yes she is 1/2 Aussie Shepherd. She is not aggressive just assertive with play and wanting to play with everything, from gnats to a leaf, forget it if its alive and moving. We have stuck to the principles and yes she will jump on people, barely listens, you name it, some demon has appeared, she wants to play with everything, they tell me it takes 2 years with Aussies that they are unique, clearly we have missed something. There are days I see her at her best but it is very infrequent, definitely a trial of wills, she is extremely affectionate and sweet. We think she wants to herd the world with her love, a really baby. We have even minimized our words and hand commands to prevent confusion in the smart mind of hers. Tips appreciated.

My question is should I start separating them for obedience training or let them do it together. Should I allow them to sleep together or place them in separate kennels. I'm just doing a little bit at a time, all day long. I make my sessions challenging but not so challenging the puppy is likely to fail. It takes a while to be able to read puppies well, so I always recommend novice trainers keep a training journal. Keep track of your exercises and repeat the patterns that are successful, don't repeat the patterns that aren't successful.

"my puppy can't go out because he hasn't had all his shots" My first puppy died of parvovirus. He hadn't even been outside yet. It must have been tracked in on our shoes. This is really bad advice. Ultimately I think it depends on where you live. If there are stray dogs in your neighborhood or city, then the risk is much higher. I also suggest you be careful when purchasing from a breeder, and make sure the pup wasn't weaned too early from his mother, and that his first shot wasn't too early. Bad breeders try to push the boundaries, and this compromises the pup's immune system, and makes the first vaccination less effective. If the pup is quickly weaned and then quickly vaccinated. The MBAs in the mother's milk actually block the effectiveness of the vaccine. Make sure the breeder followed correct protocols. Our didn't. The next puppy we got, we kept indoors, but this time sterilized every surface she was allowed any contact with with a 4% bleach solution, on a regular basis. We then carried her in a bag during the critical period to socialize with people, without touching the ground. And we scheduled play dates with friends' dogs that were known to be healthy and vaccinated. It didn't seem to negatively affect her socialization. She's not dog aggressive or timid at all. It was just a lot more work.
@StonnieDennis

So, if one needs to carry a puppy around in a bag to prevent exposure to pathogens, what about the 99.99% of the healthy puppies that do not get carried around in a bag?
@mikebarnacle1469
@mikebarnacle1469 6 жыл бұрын
It depends if you live in a high risk area. Talking to a local vet will give one a sense of the risk based on their area. Any city which has a high number of strays has a much much much higher risk of infection. In your case Stonnie, you have likely only lived in low risk areas - so I can understand that this seems absurd to you. To answer your question directly, where I live, Taipei, it's actually closer to 50% of puppies that die of a disease preventable by vaccination, not 0.001%. This is largely due to the many strays and very dense population of the city. Parvovirus survives everywhere under extreme conditions for 6 months - and it is everywhere where I live.
@StonnieDennis
@StonnieDennis 6 жыл бұрын
mikebarnacle I address the benefits vs risks in many videos. As far as risk exposure, are you saying that the fifty percent of puppies that survive to adulthood are carried around in a bag until they are sixteen weeks? I don’t believe that for a second. Next, concerning early weaning, I’m not sure why you are talking about the relationship between early weaning and resistance to common pathogens. Puppies only have the ability to absorb the antibody rich colostrum produced by the mother for about the first 18 hours after birth. Passive immunity is gained within the first day after birth, or it is not gained at all. Your assertion that the breeder’s weaning protocol has an effect on vaccine efficacy is completely unfounded. Your assertion that the steps you took with your second puppy prevented the puppy from getting parvo is simple speculation. I’ve seen plenty of owners have to deal with parvo, even after following very similar hygiene regimens. I’ve helped raise thousands of dogs. Can you say the same?

I don't question your experience and knowledge with anything else. You obviously know a million times more about raising dogs than I do. And I have learned a lot from your videos. So thank you. "As far as risk exposure, are you saying that the fifty percent of puppies that survive to adulthood are carried around in a bag until they are sixteen weeks? I don’t believe that for a second. " - In my city, yes, they are. The only reason I didn't do it for the first pup is because I was not aware this is what everyone else does in this high risk area. After the first pup died, everyone told me that it's standard practice here to quarantine the pup until their third shot. I was largely from behaviorist sources that stress early socialization, who are based in low risk areas. Talking to local pet owners, and vets, I got a completely different picture - that it was absolutely crazy to allow my pup to chew on my shoes and carpet which were most certainly contaminated from the outside. "Your assertion that the steps you took with your second puppy prevented the puppy from getting parvo is simple speculation." But I wasn't making an argument that quarantining was the deciding factor in my second pup's survival. I was saying that the non-ideal compromise, with socialization in a carry bag + scheduled play dates, did not result in a dog with behavioral problems today. "Your assertion that the breeder’s weaning protocol has an effect on vaccine efficacy is completely unfounded." What I've read is that if the puppy is weaned immediately before vaccination, then the first vaccine is less effective. drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/puppy-vaccinations-why-puppies-need-a-series-of-shots/ Backyard breeders and puppy notoriously wean then vaccinate as soon as possible, with no intermediate period. To get a faster turnaround.

Your method is likely absolutely correct pretty much anywhere inside the United States where you usually either have major cities with good animal control, or rural areas where the chance of contact with parvo infected waste is uncommon purely due to distance. Things change outside the US, because there are many cities around the world that have a big problem with strays in densely populated cities. Imagine new york city with stray dogs and cats everywhere. That's really common outside the US. I've seen it in Spain, Argentina, and everywhere in Asia. Pretty much every second world country. Animal control like the US is only something a few highly developed countries have. These are the places where the risk is much higher. I just think a small disclaimer would be a good idea, since on KZbin you have a global audience.
