"Unraveling the Complexities of Aquatic Ecosystems and Land-Sea Interactions to Foster Sustainable Coastal Communities in the Anthropocene"
The Stony Brook Provost’s Lecture Series features talks by the university's SUNY Distinguished Academy faculty, highlighting their areas of deep expertise. Christopher Gobler delivered a talk, "Unraveling the Complexities of Aquatic Ecosystems and Land-Sea Interactions to Foster Sustainable Coastal Communities in the Anthropocene," on April 4, 2024.
Gobler is a SUNY Distinguished Professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and Endowed Chair of Coastal Ecology and Conservation. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Delaware. He later received his Masters in Marine Environmental Science and his Ph.D. in Coastal Oceanography from Stony Brook University. He started as an adjunct research professor here at SBU in 2002 and later became an Associate Professor in 2005. Gobler is a world-renowned marine phytoplankton physiological ecologist who has made exceptional advances in our understanding of the increasing incidents of harmful algal blooms that have altered coastal ecosystems world-wide. He has developed and sustainably funded a robust laboratory to evaluate these occurrences and has expanded his research activities to include possible engineering actions to remediate eutrophication of coastal waters that can contribute to these algal blooms.
