Kujo Painting

Күн бұрын

Tired of your base coats looking like a bowl of porridge? Learn how to properly apply a base coat and stop painting like a turnip.
This video is recommended for ages 16 and over.
I don't often make foundational miniature painting videos, but I'm asked quite regularly to make more basic tutorials, so I thought we'd start off from the beginning and look at how to paint on a quality base coat.

Base coating is a topic that is usually ignored by miniature painters, but it's totally fundamental to get it right. It is the basis for nearly everything you do. If you get it wrong, it's likely that the rest of your paint job will suffer as a result. Start things off right, and learn how to lay down a solid, smooth and even base coat. Miniature painting is hard enough, why make it harder for yourself with terrible foundations?

I really love your painting techniques, you make it look so easy. Lately I've been moving from using washes and applying my dark(shade) basecoat first then layering the "regular" basecoat then highlights either by layering/blending/stippling and I have to say the results I get vs using washes/oil washes or any type of wash is MUCH better, I don't know why but it looks more visually appealing. Although they do take longer when painting armies via this method its very good in building your brush skills with advanced techniques like blending etc. I hope to increase the rate I can apply layering to a speed where compared to using washes its not that much difference in time.

You could make a whole video on yellow layering, like how the basecoat affects it more than most other colors. The trick is that if you’re not painting on white, but for example black, you can layer brown -> tan -> white -> yellow instead of ten yellows.

Interesting. I just got a few scalecolor paints, and I've heard two very different ideas about basecoating with them. Either people say you can go into the paint with just a damp brush and therefore minimal dilution, or they'll say that they're thicker and therefore need more thinning than most other paints. I watched a few of scale75's quick painting tuts that they have up on youtube, and they seem to not dilute the paint much either. I haven't had them for very long, but it seems that when I thin them more, they go on just fine but the coverage isn't great. They do seem to also flow off the brush fine with less dilution as well. What's your take on that? Maybe I need to choose a lighter primer also.
@moonshinetheleocat1235
@moonshinetheleocat1235 3 жыл бұрын

@KujoPainting

Yeah, it's very common. But sometimes it's not the consistency that's an issue, just how much is on the brush. I should probably have explained that too. Ah well, gives me a topic for another video. Cheers! :)

This hobby is awful. I'm sick of loading up the tiniest drop of paint I can and having it spread all over the model. What's the advice everyone says? "Thin your paints!" This is horrible advice. Paint thinning is the *problem*.
@KujoPainting
@KujoPainting 2 жыл бұрын
I understand your frustration but in many cases, the consistency of your paint is pivotal to the success of various techniques. The importance of paint consistency becomes progressively more obvious the more experience you gain. Many techniques will simply not work if the paint is too thick/thin. Thinning your paint is only half the battle, perhaps more important than paint consistency itself, is the amount you have on your brush. As you say, very thin paint will flood onto the model if there is too much on the bristles. While conversely, thick paint will dry and become unusable if you have too little. You must find a balance between both paint dilution and the amount on your brush. That is the key. As a general rule, the thinner the consistency, the less you want on the brush, so that you can control it. While on the contrary, the thicker the paint, the more you want, so that it doesn't dry out too fast.

@@KujoPainting I'm sorry about my rant yesterday, I was really frustrated. The only technique I was able to find that actually let paint stick to the mini was to not thin my paint (but have my brush wet; my paint says it can be used out of the bottle anyway so I should have adhered to that) and load up about a quarter of the brush with paint, which are both the opposite of what everyone parrots online, and I felt tricked.
