It’s the ingenuity of filmmakers using affordable items to emulate Hollywood techniques is what has helped us all become better over the years. I just ended my first full week in the Editorial department on my very first feature film. My credit will partially belong to Film Riot. Ten years ago I was making shorts with my friends in middle school and watching your videos. Ryan, I'm sure you've heard this story before, but you and the rest of Film Riot literally changed my life. What has always separated this channel from the now hundreds of other KZbin filmmaking channels is the unabashed honesty that you and your team brings to your work. The perspective that you provide is invaluable, and utterly inspiring. You didn't come from money, your family isn't super connected, and you didn't grow up in L.A. - just like so many of us. Your first feature will be a monument to the passion of filmmaking, and I can't wait to see it! Who knows, maybe I'll even get to work on it. Thanks guys :)

One thing I try to remember is to experience failure but to not identify with it. If I make a film that fails it does not mean I'm a failure. "I'm a failure" is far too general a label to assign oneself for an incredibly nuanced and variable craft such as filmmaking. Thanks for the good word, Ryan!

I love this episode so much! Here at Congruity we've been doing film for 10 years and looking back at what I was doing at 8,13, 15, 16 years old I cringe every time. But now at 18 working on a feature level cinematic universe, I wouldn't be here unless I had failed in the past. Our team motto is "The quality of a film is not about how expensive your gear is or how much you have, it's about using what you've got to make something incredible." And we live by that every day. Thank you Film Riot for being one of my biggest inspirations over the years as well, it's been a pleasure learning from and growing with you. Excited for the years to come!

Oh man. I have fear of failure on every single project. I shoot weddings and before every wedding I get massive anxiety (less than I used to) but it's terrifying. Shooting creative projects, especially with actors or models that I really respect and admire in my area - so much anxiety. I'm at a place now where I'm working on putting together a series of small videos with models, and I find myself petrified in the planning stage. I just need to accept that some projects will work and some will suck, and some will be in between and that's ok because I'll learn a lot. I think being in business making commercials and films as a living makes me feel like I can't afford to fail - but I think that's a fallacy. Even at the Hollywood level there are failures and directors still go on (usually).

I remember watching these guys in the early days when I was still in school wanting to also figure out how to be a film maker. I then went to college and for the next five years the enthusiasm just died for me unfortunately. Fortunately I found a new passion in the process which was music and I've been really happy with where ive taken myself with it. I've recently over the last six months checked back in with Ryan and the FR family and I am so happy and proud with how far they've come and have reminded me why I enjoyed the film making process, so much so I have decided to return by doing music videos for my bands and other people's. Episodes like this are really helpful in being mentally and emotionally supportive for not just the film making community but the entire creative empire. On a side note I have a loooot of catching up to do. Great to be back Ry Guy

I’m a filmmaker and a musician. The group I play for just did really bad at a church gig. Like...yesterday. I know most of what you just talked about applied mostly to filmmaking, but because my most recent failure had to do with music, the whole time you were talking I was taking the advice and applying it to that one performance. Hopefully I and the rest of the group can deal with this failure positively and learn so we can grow. Thanks for the video Ryan. Long time fan.

this is very liberating. Last week I just had my first feature broadcasted on my country's national tv. To be honest, the outcome is not what I had in mind and I never felt so ashamed in my life. Especially to my cast and crew who had great faith in my project. I felt like I want to run away and lived inside a cave somewhere far from civilization. But as you have said, nobody's early works is good and perfect. We have to start somewhere and accept the possibility to fail. At least it taught me many lesson in movie making production. And at least we got our money back...I think haha. Thank you for your insight and I will keep on making movies in future.

Preach Connolly! “Failure is ALWAYS an option,”. - Adam Savage of Mythbusters i actually like your old sketches! As cheesy as they are, they’re a lot of fun and I can definitely tell that you guys are having fun and you just want to MAKE stuff! And make and make and make and make some more. My failure comes from film school and failing out of the film major and having to study something else for a short time so I could graduate. All of my student shorts suck (except my very first one is enjoyable) but I learned and got to experience SOO much from the film school failures that it accelerated my learning and experience. I got more out of a year and half in school that what I could’ve gotten from 5 or more years on my own. I’m VERY grateful for what I went through in school.

Your the best! A lot of people just talk about there successes, and hide under the carpet there failures. Some of the greatest things you can share with people are not the things you have done, but to continue to do what Film Riot has done since day 1...taking that curtain and unveiling the stuff thats not seen. You know Showing us the Wizard of Oz (I think that means you are the wizard or wait no who is doing the unveiling then..haha) but really thank you for showing us the next hardest thing to share with people. That Ryan Connolly is actually a human and not a T-800 filming machine and does fail from time to time!

No. I kept trying, i kept practicing for hours everyday. The other day i got a call that a band wanted me to start touring with them next year and do a few small shows in the summer. Its a metallica tribute band, but hey you got to start somewhere. I also have a thrash metal band as well. Hey, Ryanator and everyone at Film Riot! I love your stuff! You and your crew have taught me a lot! I'm 56 years old and doing film making on the side. I have no formal training and I've been wanting to do film making since I was a kid, but my father always said that this won't get me nowhere and to learn a trade. So I learned a trade and became a Diesel Tech. And that's when life got in the way!!! I'm trying to make a Christian short about the end of time. I have a maybe 30-minute script that I have written, I let my family and friends read it and all I get is that they think it's good, but it's too short. Yes, the script is open-ended. I've seen apocalyptic movies on a Christian movie channel and they always seem too preachy or I really don't care about the characters, and I think that should change. I'm sorry, went in too deep on that!! My main problem is that I'm doing this completely by myself. I've tried to recruit my daughters, my wife, church members, etc. No one wants to get in front of the camera. I have very little funds (like zero), I live in a small rural town in Southern Illinois, but it's really hard to find actors or even wanna-bes in my area. It's also very hard for me to get constructive criticism on my script. Would you mind if I send you a copy of my script for you to read and what are your suggestions for me to find or convince my friends or family to help. I think the most characters I have is one main girl and maybe four or five secondaries with a crowd scene. I'm sorry that this is so long... this is usually how my scriptwriting or writing in general goes lol. Love you guys and keep up the great work! You guys are hilarious!!!!

I tried to film two shorts in the same day. The first one, we ended up having technical glitches on top of the mistakes I made as my first time operating a camera. Due to those glitches we lost the light for the second one. The first one was bad enough, but the second we didn't get to film at all. I had over a dozen people on set, over half of which had driven several hours to be there... didn't film a single bit of footage. It was a literal kick in the gut. THEN when I got home and started checking the footage from the first short and realized how much footage wasn't gonna be usable... I wanted to crawl in a hole. I finally pulled my head out of by butt and edited what we could use. I had to take some... "artistic liberties" that I wouldn't normally do, but I put it together. While I'm not 100% happy with the end product, I'm not 100% disappointed either. Now, we're moving on to new projects with the knowledge of my mistakes from those failures. Just keep doing it. If you want it bad enough you won't stop. No matter what.

I suffer this fear all the time. I'm young and have been fortunate enough for my first feature to be a success in what it was supposed to be, a small town movie. There were certainly small failures along the way, and I think this video will help me prepare for when failure hits

Wow. Ryan, thanks for sharing this side of filmmaking (although part of me feels like this is some all round advice for life in general) it's rare to see this honesty in the happy-glamour of KZbin. No doubt you have articulated what most of us have been feeling or felt in the past, but even more so you've just inspired all of us to stop being afraid of failure. Thank you for always being transparent and giving us something real.

I think this video is one of the most important videos on this channel. At lest it definitely is for me. I just failed on my first short film ive shot in over a year and some very long nights and very negative thought this video definitely gave me the motivation to keep going and fail harder. Thank you Ryan :)

Thanks Ryan. Failure has been one my biggest blocks when making my films. But learning from failure is very Important and I'm glad that you're willing to be open and honest about your failures is awesome. Especially for young film makers seeing this, I think it will really open a fee eyes and let people know it's okay to fu*k up. That things happen. Overall just good advice. Thank you.

Omg looking back at those early day shots brought back some memories. God how long have I been watching you guys now? Don’t even remember but it was definitely back in Rev3 times! Totally agree in every way shape and form. Fail hard and fail often. You’re only going to get better from it.

Failure is inevitable. Your attitude towards them is a choice. I love this comments section for everyone coming clean on how realistically hard it is. Everyone is focused on showing that top 20% of success when at least 80% is going to be failure even for those you see succeed.

Thank you for this advice Ryan. I've been holding off writing my first feature film for awhile for similar reasons. Watching this video just sparked me to finish it. So far I'm only two scenes in but this story is very personal and attached to me so I'm determined to finish it and get it made. Thank you again Ryan
