This article IS INDEED filled with misinformation. It's a stab at veterans and my husband had to literally fight for 12 years to get 100% service connected disability. We go to the VA. He has monthly mental health visits, drug tests, and social worker meetings. He would ABSOLUTELY want to be able to work if he had to choose between PTSD, Arthritis from a broken neck from being blown up in Iraq. Yeah, veterans have the best surgeons because he doesn't look like he's been blown up. He can't work because after a few days, he has to shut down and do some self care. Is that not extreme enough? Everything they suggested, the VA already has or does. I can't tell you HOW MANY TIMES, we've filed and refiled and the documentation, Nexus link to the injury 🤕. However, the VA isn't always the best and when they screw up, they really do. Thank you for saying something. ❤❤

Veterans' Health Care Could Be Cut by Department of Government Efficiency MAGA allies plot path for Trump to buck the Constitution and stay in power for a third term By GEOFF EARLE, DEPUTY U.S. POLITICAL EDITOR 15:42 16 Dec 2024, updated 17:57 16 Dec 2024 Published Nov 14, 2024 at 11:45 AM EST President-elect Donald Trump's newly created Department of Government Efficiency could impact health care for veterans if plans to cut appropriations for expired bills go ahead. Trump announced on Tuesday that Tesla CEO Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamywould spearhead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, once he takes office in January. Trump said DOGE, which will not be an official government department, will "slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies." Ramaswamy, who ran for the Republicanpresidential nomination before suspending his campaign in January, has since said that money spent on expired government programs should be stopped. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Ramaswamy cited the $516 billion spent on expired acts for the 2024 fiscal year. "There are 1,200+ programs that are no longer authorized but still receive appropriations," which he described as "totally nuts" and advocated for saving "hundreds of billions" of dollars each year by "defunding government programs that Congress no longer authorizes."

I’m applaud!!! This person doesn’t know the sacrifices our military makes. If you are lucky enough to come home you might have incurred injuries. It’s war, not daycare!!! If you suffer a disability while on active duty you can apply for a tax free benefit. The severity determines whether you are rated 0%-100%. Unless your condition is serious enough to not improve they rate your condition as permanent and total. Otherwise you will have reevaluations to reduce your compensation once your condition improves. Congress starts out at $176,000 a veteran at 100% receives $44.844. I’m 100% P&T. I will never be able to what I once was able to do. My disabilities prevent me from working. I wanna work! My condition prevents me from being productive and reliable. There have been many years that I spent more days in the hospital than at my home. When you can’t breathe how can you work. I only have 1/3 of 1 lung. I’ve been on Hospice, but God has kept me around. Veteran’s are the reason we have our freedom and choices. Many as young as 18 never made it home. This article is ridiculous. This article implies that veterans are a slug on society. I’d love just 5 minutes with the author of this hit piece!!! ❤🇺🇸

You said a mouthful concerning how hard it is to go from 90 to 100...the VA has been denying me service connection for migraines for the past 5 or 6 years...I was in from 93-16 with a documented history of migraines from 03 AND on meds from THEM...but since my calculated rating is a 93 (2 points from round up) and lowest they could rate me at is probably 30 (3 more points) go figure...If civilians knew what we had to go thru to get what we've already earned they'd never write those type of articles (opinion pieces)

Those who say this should join the military or make their children and grand children join... AND deploy to a combat zone for several years and then say they do not deserve benefits for doing what the majority of America refuses to do. I know many vets that moved over here to the Philippines because they could not keep a job in the US and living on disability would not even keep them out of poverty. Big business CEOs get millions in yearly bonuses for being good at getting Americans to spend more money, but people want to complain about veterans getting benefits for making Americans feel safer? Well, we will see where the US government stands on this when the 2026 financial spending budget comes out in October.

There was a surge of troops after 9/11, then during Obama admin, there was force reduction, but continued troop build numbers, after the 2nd Iraqi war and out of afghan, we have millions of veterans with wide range of disabilities, but as a veteran, we don’t stop building and strengthening this one and only nation, defending the constitution. No matter the disabilities rating, veterans continue to try or actively being a productive American. You’re right, the article doesn’t portray the true picture. Many veterans continue to live, suffer in silence and do what they can, trying to just fit into civilian society without standing out, we don’t ask much, amen on your video. And I have worked temporarily as GS employee and know how disadvantaged I felt, seeing those who could get the degrees /time in civilian federal service, people of similar age group, putting down vets who took a entry level GS 4 job with 10 pt vet preference, because I have relearn different because of disabilities. Being back in school, because like myself, we can’t do what we trained and did so well while in service. That opinion piece, does not account for many vets who have to restart from the bottom, rebuilding a career, business, life, families and barely afford to pay to survive. It’s feels, like going against the current, 24/7,365 days of the year, year after year. The struggle to give into just silently giving into and drifting away, getting peace fr9m it all, is an every second thought. If those like me took the path, the growing expenses as the article mentioned, the nation would save billions by eliminating compensation, rehabilitation, re-education, healthcare and aftercare. The VA also has so many red tape, hoops to jump through and difficulty to get benefits and care, or even worse,the champva system for family members.

Actually, this may never happen and here’s why: For a change to veterans' compensation or benefits, even if such legislation passes the House of Representatives, it would also need to pass the Senate. Here's how the filibuster might come into play: Senate Voting Requirements: Most legislation in the Senate requires at least 60 votes to overcome a filibuster-a tactic used to delay or block a vote on a bill. Democratic Filibuster: If Democrats or any opposing group disagreed with the proposed changes, they could invoke a filibuster. Overcoming the filibuster would require a supermajority (60 out of 100 senators). Exceptions: Some budget-related items can bypass the filibuster using budget reconciliation, which only requires a simple majority (51 votes). However, this process has strict limitations and might not apply to changes in veterans' benefits. In short, unless there is significant bipartisan agreement, a filibuster could block or delay such legislation in the Senate.

Some of us that are actually affected by trauma obvious or not should be at least considered. I went to help and was told I made too much money. Had I not been employed by a company that had medical insurance I would have been in trouble..

Very well said these folks that want to cut our benefits have never served so it's easy a them to say we are over payed , just leave the veterans alone, we deserve our benefits . we make up only 1 percent of Americans who has served.

Veterans need more! Dental and compensation for life! When a veteran gets ill they end up loosing their life insurance because they get sued and end up loosing social security checks that paid the premiums

We deserve every benefit that we receive who ever wrote this article doesn’t know what they are talking about because obviously they are not veterans themselves and also yes I even though I’m 100% P &T as a matter of fact I work for veterans affairs and not stay at home eating bonbon s and drinking hot cocoa

One particular political Party is interested in cutting V.A. benefits. BIGLY hint, it's the one that loves to pay lip service to the military and the troops. If you pay attention, more often than not, it's the opposition Party that often fights tooth and nail to secure funding for the troops and veterans. The other Party that merely pays lip service often has to be guilted into actually supporting the troops. Elections have real world repercussions.

What happened in 2001 that lasted for two decades to increase the VA's budget? Did they forget to mention that we were at war during that time?
@williamcastillo4116Ай бұрын
How come no one writes an article about EDUCATING our veterans about their earned rights. Educating veterans about the rights they have to be seen at a VA Hospital / clinic. Write an article about how the system does not reach out the the millions of veterans, one, two, or three years after they get out, to see how they are doing. EDUCATE OUR VETERANS about their earned rights…..!!!!!!

NO WAY! NO WAY! We should be taking WAAAYYYY BETTER care of the men and women who serve our country and stand on the thin blue line to defend our country and protect our citizens! They risk their lives, and sometimes lose them, or even become disabled or dismembered for life. There is not enough that we can do because the sacrifices are just too great not just for those that serve but for their families as well. We should at least give them a reasonable salary for life, reasonable housing for life, and The very best medical care our country can afford. There is no excuse to send money anywhere outside the country before we take care of our veterans and our police and fire departments, along with medics who stand on the front line, risking all, and sacrificing all with courage.

Taking care of vets has been a bipartisan staple since 2001 and America is never three steps away from another major conflict. I don't think congress will touch the VA. However, let's be honest with ourselves. Whether you were blown up in GWOT or worked in the finance office at an ANG unit, everyone is filing now and tries to maximize their claim. It's only a matter of time before someone notices never-deployed 4 year peacetime veterans getting 70% or more on top of working a high paying full time job.. I know a handful of those folks. Now it's become a target for cuts and privatization, which would take away from everyone. This attention is what happens when you get people milking it for all it's worth.
@Mr.frag-outАй бұрын
I agree in some areas I know guys who never got out of basic training never served a day in a unit receiving ratings for knees and ptsd. we need to police our own too people and cuts should be made for people who can't even fulfill their initial contract obligation. even now they want benefits for dishonorable discharge soldiers.

What we as service members do is what these publishers and other people would consider " not normal" under the circumstance of situations, drills, and training we were subjected to. So of course others who 1. probably never lost a loved one or 2. had to live with or know a family member in the name of serving their country would have a negative opinion of the compensation we receive.

Can someone explain how MST-PTSD is easier to prove than tinnitus, yet MST-PTSD awards beyong 50% on most claims and tinnitus is generally 10%? Does a veteran trully have a significantly higher liklihood of being sexually assaulted than being exposed to loud noises that induces tinnitus?

While most people my age went to frat parties in college, enjoying life, I joined the army to defend our nation and your ability to freely and safely go to college, or pursue whatever future you want. I spent several years doing that over seas. As a result I have some of my closest friends in the ground, service related PTSD, depression, and an injured spine by my early 20's. Not to mention all the time I lost with family. I lose my ability to walk at times and deal with excruciating pain, while most people enjoy a normal life, enjoying whatever activities they want. It is incredibly difficult for me to find work due to my condition. I can't pursue my dream careers like ya'll can. If it wasn't for the VA, I would be homeless on the street. And ya'll have the nerve to tell us we get too much help? What's wrong with this country ya'll?

The biggest issue I have with this Economist piece is that they compare a time prior to Sep 11 2001 to a time spanning 2 major military operations spanning 2 decades. A time where battlefield injuries meant death to a time where modern medicine means you get maimed but live. Cheaper to let the soldier die is all I got from this hit piece. Nothing wrong with the benefits our veterans receive. This author should do actual journalism and talk with vets not just analyze some numbers without context.
@BiddyWarrАй бұрын
They also pushed to have the PACT Act cover trans surgery being done on active. SO it paid for the surgery and they received high benefits ratings for the surgery and mental issues.
@douglassshephard3732Ай бұрын
If they want to make the VA better and more cost effective, every veteran goes to a hospital in their community and you have someone from the VA there to take care of the bill, they have to qualify to be a veteran through the VA sandpaper work is now, but they're treated in the neighborhoods, this would save a lot of money that is wasted in VA hospitals, the clinics do a good job, it is the hospital VA hospitals that do not really help, people that want to take away veterans benefits, before you go to take away, veterans benefits it would be a good idea to understand what a veteran has given to the country, you go in the military you are never going to be the same as you as you was before you went in, that is the way it is, you cannot be that same person ever again, the longer you been in the further away from what you were you will go, you never can come back, the same, you are forever changed, forever.
