Hi jason, commenting for the third time, looks like my comments with the link to my spreadsheet were deleted somehow. Anyhow, huge fan of your videos. I planning on buying my very first gaming pc this month. Since I can't link the doc, i will just type it out. I chose the 7900x bundle from microcentre. A 6950 xt, a montech 903 case, deepcool ls720, corsair rme 1000 watts 990 pro 2tb. Budget is 1800 i am a programmer by profession and gamer by hobby. I need high cpu because sometimes I run programs that eat up the cpu. I mostly do AAA gaming, and valorant, cs on the side. Hi Jason, So my budget is around 900$ max. I am trying to build a future proof pc rn. My first thought was to build a pc with ryzen 7600x but b650 mobo prices are very high in my country. Reason for choosing 7600x is because i can upgrade the processor in the future without changing my mobo.But it seems impossible rn.Also,in that 900$ it includes a gigabyte g24f2 165hz 1080p monitor but doesn’t include a gpu because i will sell my old rig and get the rx 6700 xt. I can take the 7500f but in my previous two builds both times my gpu died on me so i am kinda scared to take a cpu without integrated graphics. Can you help me with a future proof build in this price range?

@proshantobunny5673 no such thing as future proof. Build a pc for your needs today because who knows what coming down the road. In 3-5 years you will need an upgrade regardless to stay relevant.

For RAM, I agree QVL is somewhat moot at this point unless you’re trying to overclock to really high speeds. That being said I tend to look and focus on chip manufacturer instead for maximum compatibility. For DDR5, Hynix is the way to go right now. DDR4 Samsung or Hynix is fine.

Thanks for mentioning that cpu memory controller could be a limitation to your ram speeds. I think I told this story in another comment section a long time ago but I felt real silly buying ddr4 3600 cl14 only to not be able to run the kit at xmp with my intel 12700 and having to lower clock speed by 200 mts. And as if that wasnt enough of a kick in the nuts, when I recently made the switch to 4k from 1440p and upgraded gpu accordingly, for some reason my cpu's ram overclock tolerance went down even further, not allowing me to run this same kit any faster than 3200 cl16. Oh but it got better. Had a gpu driver problem recently that warranted troubleshooting off the igpu, guess what, now I could only successfully boot up at 3000 mts if I was using the igpu. Hopefully with an upgrade to a K sku 13th or 14th gen chip depending on prices I'll finally be able to run this kit to its full potential.
@kramnull896211 ай бұрын
Yeah, other than XMP settings for my Corsair ram the only thing I can run is factory DDR4 3600 CL18. That's on my MSI Tomahawk z790. I'm using Intel Extreme tuning on Desktop, so with no overclocking in bios, so I don't think that is hindering me from booting at 3800. Crazy thing is. "Memory Try It" in bios has stupid 4800mhz CL 15 timings; which most every kit of ram on the market would crash with. Another setting is 4000 CL14. Those kits would cost $400 to get any amount of ram, say 32Gb x2...

Your channel is filled with so much common sense. Too many reviewers are recommending AM4/DDR4 builds to get 32 gigs minimum; not realizing that someone buying into AM4/DDR4 is doing so to save money. You always take the stats into account in your videos. Like another one where you focused on 1080p since it's still the most popular resolution (Running three 1920x1080s + one 1600x900 here). Though I would contest your statement against DDR5 being considered "future-proof" due to evolving speeds. I believe that, when DDR5 is called "future-proof" compared to DDR4, it's usually in consideration to MOBO requirements. Buy DDR5 today w/ AM5, and you can count on using it many years later. Buy DDR4 now w/ AM4 and you will be throwing out the ram sticks the moment you get a new CPU.

Good content and great advice for a build I am currently doing. DDR4 does not fit in a DDR5 slot as I tried it out today. Also believe this is an older video, but as of now DDR5 isn't too expensive. I got DDR5 2X16GB "6000" for $119 (32GB) which is about $50 less when this video was made. I was tempted to double it as there are 4 slots (total 64GB), but since I am using an i9-12900ks I will use 2 sticks as Jason advises here. I am not new to pc building, started in the early 90s....my last 2 or 3 have been factory builds. Having fun at age 67 with this hobby now that the 4070 super series came out, I had to come back!! Local prices for ram vary WILDLY around here - a stick of DDR5 6000mhz CL30 is nearly twice as expensive as DDR5 6000mhz CL40, for example. You stated around 15:48 that slower kits offer nearly no savings, hence the recommendation. But under a scenario where the price difference is so large, would the performance loss of going with a 6000mhz CL40 kit be significant over a 6000mhz CL30 nowadays for a Ryzen 7600X? Thanks :)

@PCBuilderChannel11 ай бұрын
We answer all these questions in the video so I recommend watching it. That board states compatibility for 5600 in an overclocked mode. The base speed will be dependent upon the RAM manufacturer. All Ryzen 7000 motherboards support both XMP and EXPO and there's really no difference between them.
@SpoonHurler11 ай бұрын
1) if you put 5600 ram into the system and don't enable XMP or EXPO (both are factory tuned overclocks) you will probably get 4800 speed. The ram will come with up to 5 profiles pre-tuned (generally 1-3 and some blank ones though) and you can (but shouldn't) overclock the ram manually. 2) EXPO or XMP will not be that important unless you are trying to get very fast ram with very tight timings to run in 4x sticks then EXPO might help it be stable if you are on AM5.

Hi! I've been deep-diving your channel in preparation for my upcoming PC upgrade. Preparing everything for black friday. I have a RAM question; For AMD you recommend DDR5/6000/CAS30. But the ram chips I'm browing through have additional numbers. Such as 40-40-96 or 36-36 or 36-36-76. Any thoughts on those and on the performance impact on that? Thanks! Also; Do I need to pay attention to that AMD EXPO flag?
@TheAshfyr7 ай бұрын
AMD EXPO is the Overclock method for AMD IIRC. So, basically the same as Intel XMP if you are using AMD. It allows you to run the ram at a higher clock speed as long as the motherboard supports the speed.

Those other numbers are the clock timings, it affects the stability of the ram, not sure the details beyond that though.

The QVL is still very important that you match memory that is compatible with Motherboard and CPU. I recently got burned on this picking up Memory for a B550 DDR4 from Corsair that was XMP profile rated at 3600. I should have apparently looked at Corsair’s website but that kit is just not compatible with B550 boards at that Transfer Rate. While I was able to install OS and games to the system running them was another matter. Starfield kept constantly crashing to the desktop. Running Memtest revealed a ton of errors. After dropping the XMP profile off and running at 2133 was the only time I could get the memory kit to pass. Trying to bump the rate down to 3200 still produced errors. I had to buy a kit that was confirmed compatible with the B550 Chipset. The one I had was only confirmed compatible with the X570 per corsair. After getting the correct kit was I able to run it at 3600MT. So don’t listen to advice that you can ignore QVL and Compatibility lists from these makers else you will get burned like I did.

I've never had luck trying to use a QVL - just doesn't pan out in a real world use case
@PCBuilderChannel11 ай бұрын
QVL lists are important at the beginning of a CPU architecture launch and fade in importance as bugs and compatibility are worked out. Right now people don't even really need to worry about them IMO.

The Best DDR5 RAM is 6000 CL30 from Teamgroup and 5600 CL 28 which I own G-Skill Ripjaw.

Both are great kits. I have noticed that 5600 CL28 seems to be going away in favor of the 6000 CL30 stuff.

However, with the introduction of Dual Data Rate (DDR) for RAM, the data rate (MT/s) and frequency (MHz) are no longer synchronized 1:1. DDR is a technology that doubles the data rate of standard SDRAM. By shifting data on the rising and falling edges of a square wave, DDR RAM can transfer twice as much data at the same clock speed. This does not mean that measuring RAM speed in MHz is wrong, any more than measuring it in MT/s is. Data rate and frequency are both good measures of RAM speed.

Great video, you've been really helping me out with upgrading my PC. Do you have any recommendations on RAM for a 5700X3D/RX 7700 XT combo? Would 3600 CL16 still be good enough?
@PCBuilderChannelАй бұрын
Yes that's great. And we are recommending 32gb kits now so if you need to drop down to 3200 cl 16 that's fine too.

I just added two more sticks of RAM to my older PC so running a Ryzen 3600 with 32 gigs of RAM at 3200 CL 16. I know many say that you should run RAM at 3600, but i didn't have the budget to just grab 32 gigs at 3600 CL 16, so I just put in 2 more 8 gig sticks of what I already had in it.

I'm finally upgrading from an i7-3770k, 16gb ddr3 and a gtx 770 4gb. Went with an AM5 board because I wanted to future proof this pc a bit by allowing me to upgrade the cpu in the future, and have the latest ddr5 ram. Holly hell, are AM5 boards pricey. Add on the fact ddr5 seems to be split down the market. Meaning they are made for either intel xmp, Or AMD Expo, not both. Well this has cut the market in half for me, and now all i have as options are expensive RGB models that have giant tall housings for that RGB lights. Making it difficult to fit the air coolers I can pick. I don't want to spend $40+ dollars on RGB, I just want low profile ram with a good passive cooler. I'm starting to think it was a bad decision going AM5. From the expensive motherboard, to the unavailability of affordable models of ram leading to the pricing of my current build going from under $1400, to sitting at around $1550 do to these ridiculous RGB sets and split market ram sets that don't support AMD expo. I miss the days of ram just working on any chipset like it was when i built my last machine.

Finally, been waiting for someone to say "ignore QVL" for a long time. It's just what they've tested, no way companies can test all the available kits on the market. In all honesty, I was prepared to hate this vid (based on the thumbnail) because I thought you'd say that this particular Silicon Power RAM was bad and go into the models, but it's all facts. Great vid!

Great video! I have a question: I know you specialize in gaming PC's, but a lot of us creators watch you, as well, including me. I'm building essentially a ProArt system using an Intel i9 1400KF, an Asus ProArt Z790-CREATOR WIFI ATX LGA1700 Motherboard, and an Asus ProArt OC GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16 GB Video Card. I'll be doing some basic overclocking to near max stability on everything. I am undecided about RAM, and need quite a bit for what I do. Currently, I am looking at the Corsair Dominator Titanium 96 GB 6600MT's @ CL32, or the G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 96 GB 6800MT's @CL34. I've seen pros & cons for both. With my proposed components and usage, which do you think should be better, and why? (0) (0)

I always explain to people that RAM is the desk space your CPU has to work with, not enough RAM means a small desk and your CPU has to keep going back to the file cabinet (hard drive) to search for the files it needs, with a bigger desk (more RAM) your cpu has to work less to assemble the information it needs. and when you have faster RAM if your CPU does have to go the file cabinet it can do it faster.

The megahertz/megatransfers distinction is dubious anyway. Hertz are just times per second, and you can obviously measure data transfers in hertz, just as you can measure electrical pulses in hertz.

Currently have 32GB Corsair DDR4 3200 CL16 (2 sticks, dual channel) running XMP paired with i7 13700KF (with Peerless Assassin 120 SE), ASRock H670 Steel Legend, and RTX 4070 Ti Super (Prebuilt spec in a sale). Is it worth upgrading the motherboard to a high end Z series (e.g. MSI Z790 Tomahawk Max WiFi) with DDR5 (not really planning on overclocking CPU though) or would it be a waste of money. It would cost around £300-£350 which is pretty steep but would the performance boost, if any, be worth it longterm? Or should I wait till I next upgrade GPU (not for a while)?

Hey there! Exciting build I've got in the works! 👍 I've already secured the MSI RTX 4090 24GB and the Y70 case from Hyte. For the motherboard, I opted for the MSI Z790 Godlike MAX paired with the i9 14900K 6GHz CPU. My challenge now is finding a 4-stick RAM kit that hits the desired 7800MT/s and comes in 32GB modules, not the standard 16GB. Budget is flexible, but I'm having trouble locating such high-speed RAM with the right capacity and RGB on Amazon or Newegg. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! 🚀💻

Ok, I regret of watching this video now, and realizing that I have just spent over 100 euros for nothing (Kingston 32GB (2 x 16GB) Fury Beast DDR5 RGB, 6000MHz, CL36). I would have probably got even better motherboard for cheaper price if I would have went with DDR4. Well, I know my computer will be enough for my needs for at least 2-4 years, but it still pisses me off, that they always advertise these new technologies and give the impression, that it's twice faster than previous, when in reality it's always just a few percents...if any. Just like with SSD's. Back in the early 00's leaps in speed were actually huge, and they didn't lie to us when they said if something was twice or 50% faster...at least they didn't lie this much. Now they only want to scam people to spend their money for nothing.

Hey, i just found your channel and it's amazing, do you recommend Ryzen 7 7800 3XD paired with the MSI MAG Tomahawk and an AIR cooler? is this enough to keep it cool and the VRMS ? at the moment i'm trying to figure what motherboard to buy and MSI MAG tomahawk seems like a good one, i have trust issues with Asus so idk if i should try that brand. Most of the motherboards are very expansive so i try to keep it close to a max of 250 euro.

I disagree with you on the Mhz thing. Because Hz literally means times per second if you say that your 3200Mhz DDR4 stick refers to it transferring data 3200 times per second you are still right. So instead of Mhz referring to the clock speed of the physical clock the module works on, it refers to the transfer rate of data
