12:53 That's a good option, using an add-on card for another SSD. But before going there, we should check our motherboard. All Standard-ATX mobos, most micro-ATX, and maybe an oddball ITX, have more than one m.2 slot. My ATX mobos have three each. And, of course, this isn't needed if you go with a SATA SSD. Great video, Jason. I was surprised to learn that 4TB has finally taken over the sweet spot from 2TB (but has it, really?), and I'd never seen an RGB heat sink. I always learn _something_ from your videos.

Do your research if you are considering a pcie adapter for nmve cards. The x4 versions can fit in x16 slots if you dont have x4 slots on your board. x1 slot adapters will run at a limited speed but worth considering for extra storage - not gaming. Many boards do not have full bandwidth available to use all the pcie slots and nvme slots. My MSI board has a graphics card and 2 nvme cards installed. I can not use my second x16 slot or one of my x1 slots. They get disabled when the other slots are used. The motherboard manual will list your memory storage options.

I've been using Intel/Solidigm enterprise class & professional class SSD's (2.5 SATA & M.2 NVMe) since my first one over a decade ago. They have never let me down & even the oldest one is still running today at 100% health, after many years as a primary/boot drive & later a secondary drive on newer builds. I don't mind paying a bit more for extreme reliability & durability/longevity, because dealing with failed drives is a huge headache.

Zero to SSD hero? Fine... you got me. I'll leave my like haha! I have an HDD where I have RoN, Cyberpunk77, KCD, Cities Skylines... all of them work just fine. I do get some little hiccups with RoN but not sure if it's the drive or my older bottlenecking CPU. If you can get an SSD, don't get an HDD in 2024, obviously. But saying obsolete is a bit much. Depending on the game you're trying to play, an SSD will only differ in LOADING TIMES. This is coming from an mmorpg player. Back in the day, since SSDs were sort of new/expensive you'd get the HDD for your games. And the problem with them now is that textures and stuff to stream are much larger and needs to be quicker, this is where an HDD is not useful anymore. But if you are playing something a bit older (or even newer that doesn't need the loading speeds like the examples I gave above), it can still be used. Things may vary depending on your region and market. If you can get an NVME today, just get that and don't worry. Also you can even get a Gen 3 and not overspend and not notice a difference between PCIE 3, 4 or 5.

Jason, can you please help me understand how a PCIe add in card (for an additional NVMe slot) affects the total PCI lanes/bandwidth on the PC? For example, I have a Ryzen 5700g, which has 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes. I have two NVMe drives and a full size graphics card (16 lanes). How does the PC divide up the lanes? If I insert an add-in card with a 3rd NVMe, will I reduce my bandwidth and slow down my drive or (worse) my graphics card? Thanks for any help you can provide. I have tried to research this and still don't understand....

I found the Cardea "A440 PRO" 1TB for £122 and a 2TB "A440" (i.e. non-PRO) for £152. My guess is that the PRO version has DRAM and the non-PRO version does not (based on the price difference -- neither being marked down). You know what Amazon description accuracy is like! 😀

there's also u.2/u.3 drives as well as pcie drives. these drives are a bit larger (in the case of u.2/u.3 they are typically about the size of a typical 2.5" laptop hard drive), but the difference is that there's way more room for nvme nand chips so you can typically find drives with significantly more storage. Also they tend to last waaay longer. if you write very often to your drives (say, you're a video editor working on 4k video and constantly loading and unloading video, or high quality music (like you're a pro recording mixer), or you change out your games frequently, enterprise drive last way longer, and more than that, they typically have WAY more performance in terms of once you get past the cache. you only ever get so much cache on an ssd, on some consumer ssd's once you run out of (even dram) cache, the speeds of the drives drop to similar speeds (or even lower) of a spinning hard drive (like 200mb/s in some cases). enterprise drives like u.2/u.3 and pcie slot drives often have sustained write speeds (that's AFTER your run out of cache) measured in gigabytes which is pretty fantastic. u.2/u.3 ssd's can be used in an m.2 slot or a pcie slot with inexpensive adapters, pcie ssd's obviously plug directly into a pcie slot (which is a bit limiting because of how crappy modern consumer cpus are for pcie lanes (and you don't want to take lanes away from your gpu if you want to game, so usually m.2 or m.2 adapters for u.2/u.3 are going to be the way to go. they also have REALLY LOW access times, even compared to standard m.2 drives. I'm personally looking at picking up 3x samsung 15.36 tb u.2 ssd's with m.2 adapters when I rebuild my workstation. going that big IS a really expensive option, but it's a TON of storage (I'm currently running 3x 4tb m.2 drives and am constantly running out of space), and it's fast as heck.

I've found that gen3 nvme drives mostly aren't even available anymore. When I find one of those it is more expensive than gen4 nvme. Also, anything smaller than 4TB seems to be a waste of m.2 socket. Those are best price/GB where I live. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Bigger drives usually have better endurance (TBW, terabytes written) ratings aswell. If you are doing write heavy workloads like video editing or transcoding, endurance starts to matter.

I managed to score myself a Crucial MX500 1TB back in October 2023 for just £45 off of Amazon so I'm feeling pretty smug about that right now especially considering current prices are near on double that atm. Well, technically I got it for free since someone was kind enough to send me a gift card to get it cos my HDD was driving me crazy, grinding to a halt and bottlenecking my entire system to the point that it would often freeze up and take a good 5-10mins to do a full shutdown/restart so this thing was an absolute godsend and breath of fresh air for an old system like mine, giving it a brand new lease of life. Even after all of these months I still can't get over how fast this thing is to boot up from sleep and restarts in the blink of an eye not to mention the fact it runs pretty cool and silent unlike my old HDD which was beginning to sound about as excrutiating as nails on a chalkboard lol

I got a Crucial 2TB Gen4 for my build I did last week, and when I installed it, the sticker just kinda... fell off. Like the back of it was dried up and it was crunchy. So mine has no sticker. So far it hasn't had any heat issues, and all I'm using the little heatsink that came on my Gigabyte mobo. Just sucks that it voids the warranty. Cause I literally didn't take it off myself. It wasn't a choice I made.

For gaming alone most SSDs are totally fine since you just move small bits of data from all sorts of places, but for production purposes where you move large chunks of data a lot you might need specific SSDs which dont drop their performance after a few GB's moved like most SSDs. Im happy with my Kingston Fury 2TB Gen 4 SSD I got for 106€ (mega value) on prime deal a year ago. But honestly, any SSD (SATA, Gen 3-4) does the job for pure gaming.
