great video. I myself struggled to learn this lesson as someone with knocked knees - not accepting the fact that my legs were more suited for roomier straight fits compared to slim or skinny fit pants. fashion became much more comfortable and enjoyable once i understood this.

I agree. Unless you're in Italy! Let's dress like men are suppose to dress, especially when you're showing american artists on your episode. Skinny tight skin jeans are not for men. Full cut trousers, no high rises, no flamboyant colors. Let's dress like classic masculine men.

I knew an elderly European gentleman (living here in the U.S. for a long time - decades) who loves to wear wool plaid trousers. Of course he can't find them here for a long time already but he used to buy 3-4 pairs in Germany every time he visited. The last couple of trips he couldn't find them there anymore either. Tastes and styles change. Now the point of this is the following - if you have a signature look that you love and are comfortable in and are indeed locked into I recommend stocking up as you get older (my 87 year old mother also can't find clothing she likes any more) that look may no longer be around. And let's be frank the wear and tear will be less so 6-8 pairs of trousers will probably do. The same goes for shoes, suites, jackets and shirts.

I really like how pants from the 30s and 40s looked but It is quite difficult to find them or at least something similar nowadays
@gentlemansgazette2 күн бұрын
It certainly can be challenging - the fabric makes a difference too, as modern fabrics aren't made and finished exactly the same as the genuine articles from the 30s and 40s
@KomradeKrusher2 күн бұрын
It's unlikely they will make a broad comeback, either. Retailers love that they get to skim on so much fabric, but sell them for the same price. Custom is certainly the way to go.

I have a question for you: I have two pairs of Prince of Wales check pants, one in brown, the other blue, which I enjoy wearing, but I always do so with a solid colour sport coat; meanwhile, I have a beige windowpane jacket (w/ gold & blue pattern) that I think would look great with them. However, would that be too busy? A brown herringbone? Can you discuss what patterns can be worn with each other without clashing? This also goes with shirts & ties with jackets as well. I have painted (canvases, not walls) for many years so I know colour theory very well, but could use some help with various patterns. Another great video. Yours is the only men's fashion channel I watch, so keep up the good work.

I also recommend trying on trousers with your typical pocketload of personal effects, both when trying on trousers in shops and when visiting the alterations tailor. And frankly, try on those trousers with the contents that would normally go in the jacket placed into the trouser pockets too, because there may be times when the jacket is removed but the effects still need to be carried. This is important for all of the pieces of a suit too, because the fit of the jacket and even the waistcoat would be affected by what one carries in the trouser pockets.

Not a bad idea! As an alternative suggestion, what about carrying a bag of some variety? www.gentlemansgazette.com/attache-case-guide/?

@@gentlemansgazette I do for a laptop and the accessories that I need for my job, but I was more referring to the wallet, keys, cell phone, pocket knife, and glasses case.
@dinnerjacket867123 сағат бұрын
@@TWX1138 The idea may take some getting used to, but a men's clutch (search that phrase in Google Images) is the perfect solution to hold those items, with the possible exception of the glasses case depending on the size of the clutch bag and whatever else you put in there. Sure, one can carry these personal effects in jacket and trouser pockets, but they inevitably impair the lie and comfort of the clothing.

My very first pair of "good shoes" after I was "all grown up" was a pair of goodyear welted, burgundy full wing brogue derbies handed down to me by my father. Two resoles later, and I still wear them regularly in my mid 40s and it doesn't look like they'll be going anywhere, soon.

For the last couple of years I have noticed it is much easier to buy proper clothing, proper I mean blazers, jackets, suit jackets with no super slim lapels which I hate! However we're still struggling to get nice pair of pants. The slim fit trousers are everytwhere I believe it has something to do with trends. High streets shops trying their best I can see double pleated or single pleated trousers sometimes with side adjusters but still the super slim fit which again not only do not suit an overweigh man like meself but even the fit and slim guys as it still does look like guys are trying hard but somehow it does not work good enough.

@@karlsenula9495 Great to hear you've found a style that works for you! Any other features you go for in a pair of trousers?
@KomradeKrusher2 күн бұрын
@@karlsenula9495 As a huskier gentleman myself, I always advocate for pleats. The "secret" is that most pleats nowadays are not actually functional, but more for show. Functional pleats need to be at least an inch deep (better deeper) to work, which is almost never the case for off the rack trousers. Everything else will jiust billow and flare out with the slightest movement, in which case, yes, flat fronts would be more appropriate.

I have difficulty finding decent pants because what is popular is the opposite of what I like. It is easy to find flat front, slim fitting polyester material pants. However, I insist on a pleated front, classic fitting cotton or wool pants. It looks better and is more comfortable and tends to be higher quality.
@GreenNinj4Күн бұрын
That annoys me so much. I want to get rid of plastic fabrics in my clothes to avoid producing microplastics, but it is impossible to find decent looking suit pants that arent 70% polyester.
