Well James, you certainly put a big smile on my face and have made my day by coming back, i'am just getting fed up with so many Polished watch channels all on the books and for me just ruins the watch hobbie. I know what you mean mate! I wake up in the middle of the night and say to myself, sell the collection: buy a Breitling / Omega chrono GMT. A one watch. I go back to sleep 'sorted' and then, on waking, I log on and suddenly an ad from Zelos or Yema pops up and the one-watch goes put the window. As a functioning opioid addict (pain reasons not recreational) I have to say, watch habit is harder to kick!

You are very sensible, friend. One like is not enough for this video. I own an Omega SMP 300 in blue. This is an amazing watch overall. Now I'm in a dilemma: Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch 3861 sapfire or Rolex Submariner 124060. Rolex is more than twice as expensive. You opened my eyes to not giving in to this hype and playing this Rolex game. After your video, I will choose Speedy👍

Dear sir, of course you have to own them and experience them to talk about this subject and explain to us. All this trouble you had building relationships with ADs and going down to the gray market to aquire all these watches is not easy. Thanks you for showing the way, for those who understand the above, hey man we owe you gratitude.

Good video James. It's funny, 5 years ago I couldnt afford a Rolex and honestly, I never really had a fascination for them since to me they just looked like a Seiko to some degree. Now that I can afford one, I dont want to pay the ridiculous prices for it. I dont want anything crazy, maybe just a 41mm Date Just, but I refuse pay $14,000 USD for a watch that sold for $7,000 not too long ago brand new.

I am like you, brother. I am a middle class guy with a nice collection, topped off by a couple of Rolex. Here is something about Rolex that nobody seems to talk about, but new people to the hobby need to know: You have to decide WHY you are buying a Rolex, before you buy it. You are either buying it to enjoy it OR buying it as an investment, but it can NOT be BOTH. You cannot buy a Rollie, "wear it for a while" and then expect to get top resale value for it later. Why? 904L is why. The steel they use is great. It shines up beautifully and when polished properly gives you a shione that regular watch steel (316L) will never give you. BUT... The properties that make it shine up so well, also make it scratch VERY easily. If you wear your Rolex, you are GOING to scratch your Rolex. There is no way around this. So, if it is an investment, you have to keep it in a case and never put it on your wrist. Maybe there is fun in doing it that way, for some folks. I do not know. But for me...I bought my two Rollies to wear and enjoy.

It's only about Rolex. Deep down all watch enthusiasts want Rolex. They'll beg and worship Rolex for the privilege of getting their watches.
@amarsagoo83892 жыл бұрын
I'd rather buy JLC, Breguet and Glashutte. All in a different league from Rolex, and cheaper too. I'm an enthusiast and don't care about showing off and resale value. I currently own 2 Omegas, which are as good as Rolex for less money. I don't hate Rolex, I actually like some of their models, but certainly not worth their after market value. I could get a Vacheron Overseas for the price of a GMT Master II.
@geoffwyness26452 жыл бұрын
Well I don’t love Omega,what’s all this “journey “ shite,you buy what you want (if possible) wear it,enjoy it & end of story,I’ve worn Rolex since 1975 and whilst I hate what the brand has become recently I’ll wear the 2 I have for the rest of my years.I agree 100% with what you perceive about Rolex,absolutely spot on.Best wishes.

Another point: Is an $8,000 Rolex objectively twice as good as a $4,000 Omega? No. So that means that neither is an $8,000 Rolex objectively 100 times better than an $80 Orient. Even if a Rolex is 10X better than that entry-level Orient automatic, it's price should be $800, not $8000. Yes, I understand that incremental improvement works on an asymptotic curve, but I'll never be convinced that watch quality is anywhere near as conforming to that curve as pricing would have us all believe.

Take the Submariner money and get yourself a Tudor Black Bay 58 and a white dial Omega Seamaster. I own two Rolex one Grand Seiko and five Omega timepieces. Right now on the waiting list for a 58. Honestly, i never wear my two Rolex watches. Love Omega and i am over Rolex. Never buy one again, even if i could.

You need rolex to easily sell it! That is one of the main reasons appart robustness, accuracy, stability in design, history, indépendency, own and Best steel, no compromission with quality control, cheap service price etc... 🤣

You encourage people to stop buying Rolex, but you also insist that the only way to really know anything about a Rolex is to own a Rolex. So are you saying that watch collectors should avoid knowing anything about Rolex? Maybe so, and maybe that's a good idea. What I know about Rolex, Tudor, and Omega is that their performance-to-price ratio is off-putting. Thus far, I am collecting watches in the 30-300 USD range, and I'm enjoying them. If I never experience your Big 3, then I'll never know what I might be missing, sort of like not eating Kobe beef or not having an affair with a supermodel. I can live with that because I've learned never to give the boot to the perfectly acceptable to instead accept only the perfect.
