My parents were mildly below average. My parents favored my Sister. So, I got my MD at 25, paid off my student loans of 80k 18 months after finishing residency. I married a superb woman they didn't like, (she is a loyal, faithful genius herself) and am now a millionaire and a paterfamilias myself with kids who love me. I've told my mother that my mother in law was a much better person than her. I told her, "life isn't fair; deal with it."

I've told my son, (AND MY DAD) that my Dad was a perfect role model---whenever I have an issue with my Boy, I think of what my Dad would do, and do the opposite. Love them, but don't like them particularly. My kids know two things: 1) I adore them; and 2) if they come up with a life plan that I can help with (become a welder, etc.), I will.

You thought, believed & acted! Well done, sir. The people who get on in this life will always be those who quit wishing, daydresming, fantasizing, feeeeeeeling, hoping so and otherwise wallowing in pools of empty-headed emotionalism and take up the authority and responsibility for living their lives.

@V O There's a fine line between Respecting your Parents and being a lackey. Now driving and exploring is fine. Personally, driving got old after 20 years. Your back gets older, but the cars get newer. Sitting in traffic at 16-17 isn't the same at 36-37.

When I was in my mid-twenties was the first time I unloaded on my parents and told them what I thought of them. That was only after I was confident that I would never need to go back to them for any help. I encouraged my adult children to do that to me when they felt completely independent of me because if they aren't, there will be consequences. They have yet to confront me

Of all the people on this planet. My parents are on the short list of people. I even care a little about what they think about me.. To everyone else. I don't give a rats *ss, what you think about me.. I didn't say, I wouldn't listen to what you have to say. If I believe you have something to offer that maybe valuable to me. But what you think about me. I'm STOIC. I couldn't care less what you think about me.

Easy to do in this economy.

I agree with you on the cultural failings of modern parenting, but to say the economy doesn't play a critical role is just not true. Automation, Outsourcing, Stagnant Wages since the late 70's, with massive increase in inflation have all contributed to many 20 and 30 somethings(and beyond) shacking up with Mom and Dad.

Reality is everything! You have to emotionally cut yourself off everyone, even yourself. And then see everything from on top of a high mountain. Sometimes you need to cut off your parents, sometimes it is not necessary. Everyone is different and has a different past, but one thing is for sure, people pleasing is the biggest waste of time ever. Sometimes when we try to stop people pleasing we go overboard and it is important to keep that in mind, but also having some empathy for yourself, that you might need some time to adjust. In most cases your parents are not evtl, but also just victims of their own parents. Grace towards them and yourself towards yourself is a real blessing, with or without contact. It is so sad that society is so damaged because of the parents of the parents of the parents of the parents...

I was in a similar position to this guy not so long ago. A realization dawning on me now after cutting off my parents etc. is that I never really developed much of a sense of self due to the environment I grew up in. Cappy is dead on the money, the first step is getting to know yourself for the first time and figure out what makes you happy. Until you can start that process you are just forcing it which will not get the results you want.

This guy needs Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for his anxiety condition. A therapist can teach him how to restructure his negative thought patterns about himself and the world around him. He also needs to gradually expose himself to situations that make him uncomfortable. Eventually, the anxiety will lessen.
