Stop Chickens Throwing Nesting Material Out of Boxes Fix

The nesting material in our chicken nesting boxes was getting raked out leading to dirty and cracked eggs so this is how I fixed the problem. Also in this video, I show my latest experiment of trying to use broody hens to hatch out quail eggs.

Yeah Scott, totally agree the rolled edge is much safer for the bird and us. It's just garden edging but I personally wouldn't use it in the garden - good for this purpose though... Cheers :)

funny thing, I was looking into raising quail m'self, I'm quite interested to see how well the brooding of quail eggs works in the "au naturale" way, vs a hatchery and brood box.

I understand others have done it successfully but mine didn't work out unfortunately... :(

I will be surprised if your hens successfully brood the quail eggs as I did this with a light weight bantam. She hatched the eggs them sat hard on them and suffocated them. Commercial turkeys do the same with their own eggs as they are too heavy. Even too heavy to mate naturally.

+Wendy Rowland I suspect you're right but I've heard, "use a broody hen to hatch quail," said so many times that I just had to try it for myself once and for all :)

PS. You need to settle your broody in her own hutch and pen with a couple of sacrifice eggs. When she is in a complete broody trance, remove these eggs and then put the ones you want hatched under her. This way you don't risk the eggs going cold. She does need to have peace.

I've hatched a bunch of quail using my bantams. The big girls always ended up breaking the quail eggs they where just to heavy.

too bad you don't have access to Raw sheep wool fresh from a sheer. I've seen a few KZbinrs use it the chickens seem to prefer that over straw. actually I hear that quite often chickens scratching straw out of the box they don't seem to like it at all. I would even suggest some alfalfa hay rather than using straw with the added benefits nutritious for them.

Yes it definitely could be a dislike to straw. I do use shredded paper and sugarcane mulch both seem to be ok. Never tried alfalfa hay - never seen it sold anyway to be honest. Cheers :)

You would not want to use sheep's wool as it is greasy and will affect the shell' s porosity, vital if you intend hatching eggs. I use pine wood shavings in my nest boxes. Never use cedar wood.
